It is obvious that in this room, the finishes used on floor, walls, ceiling and work surfaces have a double duty to perform. Here it is their function to be decorative as well as practical from the standpoint of upkeep and sanitation. With this end in view, a variety of materials intermingle to produce an effect as appealing as apple pie. The open beams of the ceiling are of redwood and have been hand rubbed to a five coat finish. The mission brick of the corner fireplace extends along the entire south wall into the dining space, making a planter at the bay window and a providing a handy window seat. The wall which adjoins the fireplace on the other side is papered in a blue and white print washable wall paper.
