EMBEZZLER BLAMES HORMONES; GETS 3 YEARS
VIENNA (UP) — A 60-year-old embezzler who appeared before a Vienna court blamed his thefts on a hormone cure.
He said the cure had awakened his interest in love to such an extent that his job with the advertising firm did not pay for his amatory adventures. He got three years in jail to forget women.
'Appealing and Calls Kitchen'

Howard Greene, prominent Anaheim builder, is as American as they come and like a lot of Americans, some of his ancestors were English.
During a recent trip abroad, he cast a professional eye on the English manor houses that his kinsome occupied and he liked while he saw. Not only did these houses have a quaint charm all their own but they had weathered the ravages of time remarkably well. The result was that when Howard Greene designed and built a home of his own three years ago along the Anaheim-Olive road, it was California version of the English manor house.
"Although the initial cost of the exterior treatment, with its natural heavy shakes and exposing brick, is about one third more than that of the average house says Howard Greene, 'it requires no unkeep whatever, and 30 years from now it will look even better than it does this minute."
INGENIOUS KITCHEN
The kitchen does not conform to English tradition by any stretch.

INGENIOUS KITCHEN
Kitchen does not conform english tradition by any stretch
of the imagination, but reveals American ingenuity instead. It is the kitchen that Howard is most proud of. He calls it "a whole house in one room," and despite the fact that the house has several other pleasant and well appointed rooms, the kitchen is where the Greenes spend most of their time.
The room itself measures 12x28 feet and is roughly divided into thirds. One third is streamlined and functional with the latest in electrical appliances; one third is devoted to dining with the dining table set at a bay window made gay with all kinds of growing plants both inside and out and the remaining areas is designed for relaxation and comfortable lounging.
It is obvious that in this room, the finishes used on floor, walls, ceiling and work surfaces have a double duty to perform. Here it is their function to be decorative as well as practical from the standpoint of upkeep and sanitation. With this end in view, a variety of materials intermingle to produce an effect as appealing as apple pie.
The open beams of the ceiling are of redwood and have been hand rubbed to a five coat finish. The mission brick of the corner fireplace extends along the entire south wall into the dining space, making a planter at the bay window and a providing a handy window seat.
The wall which adjoins the fireplace on the other side is papered in a blue and white print washable wall paper. Its Pennsylvania Dutch theme has been carried over to a center decorative cornice board by Mrs. Greene who painted the figures by hand her mar their natural finish.
Kitchen drawers are of this solid ash and are equipped with rollers so as to slide effortlessly and noiselessly.
To eliminate cooking odors, an electric exhaust fan is concealed in the top of one of the wall cabinets.

Spanish Broom
Among introduced species, the Spanish Broom deserves a spot. Although a stemmy upright shrub, it bursts forth in late spring with a great show of sweet-scented yellow flowers which are excellent for cutting. This shrub has become naturalized in some places, adding color to our roadside.
The California Pepper—really from Brazil—is a good shade tree but is currently not too popular because of the litter it makes and the oil droplets which are hard on automobile finishes.
The olive tree is fine for gray tones. Young trees are graceful and bushy, while old ones take on picturesque forms.

One of the most important factors and one which many people overlook in the course of building is the base of the structure. This we don't mean the foundation but the type of ground on which the foundation is set.
In Orange county we have many different types of soil from a clay to sand and each one requires different treatment for pruning footings and foundations much care can not be taken—the prospective builder in choosing the soil conditions of the he has chosen. The work area of the kitchen follows a convenient U-plan with sink and automatic dishwasher at the wall under a window, with the stove on one side and the refrigerator on the other. All are joined with tiled work surfaces.

An excellent plant for the shady garden to furnish a bank of foliage with an oriental touch is Aucuba japonica. The variegated form is perhaps more familiar than the plain green and is known either as the Sulphur Plant or Gold Dust Plant, from the yellow flecks on the leaves. Some do not care for this form as the speckles remind them of some sort of a fungus. However, the green form makes a fine mass of rich green, light enough to brighten a shady corner, but dark enough to look luxuriant.
The Aucuba forms a bushy branching shrub, eventually reaching a height of four or five feet. The shiny leaves are four to six inches or more in length, pointed, with a few scattered teeth. Flowers are inconspicuous and born male and female on separate plants. Thus it is necessary to have both parents if the bright red berries are to be seen in the fall.
