Note: OVER THE BACK FENCE column has been vacationing for the past three months, but now vacation is over and at any moment your doorbell may ring with this columnist doing the ringing. Yesterday I visited one of the former First Ladies of Finland. She came to America in 1919, the year Finland became a democracy. And in 1919 her uncle, K. J. Stahlberg, became Finland's first president. Mrs. Toini Nerdrum, 728 N. Sabina st., was born in Kuopio, Finland. Kuopio is a small town, in inland Finland. Before I got on with her story, I'll give a little of Finland's story as she told it to me. For a long while Finland was a Swedish satellite, then the Russian Czar took over. At the end of World War I, Finland became a democracy. Now Finland has one of the finest and most extensive educational systems in the world; her highways are modern, her architecture compares with some of our finest and is very, very modern in some of the cities. Landmarks and ancient architecture are preserved devoidly, and some are the most beautiful I have seen. Her top industries include manufacture of cellulose, and all phases of the pulp industry. Finland is a land of art and beauty. There are not enough schools to educate everyone, and most everyone wants to learn in Finland. The winters are extremely long; only from May to July do the Finnish people enjoy balmy, summer weather. But the summers are like none other. From May to July there is almost no night. It is like daytime 24 hours of the day. Northern Finland takes in Lapland, as do Norway and Sweden. The dividing line between Finland proper and Lapland is the Arctic Circle. Skiing—pronounced "she-ing,"—ice skating, and toboganing are national sports for three-fourths of the year, and then, as in all other countries, swimming, sailing and rowing become the pastime of natives; and the hundreds of tourists that invade Finland each year. Now that Mrs. Nerdrum's native country is firmly fixed in your memories, we'll get on with her story. In the old days Mrs. Nerdrum said there was a rather indefinite class system. There were the nobles, and from there the people ranged on down into the peasant class. Her father was mayor of Kuopio for 25 years and then he became a judge. Both her brothers and herself attended the University at Helsinki. Her older brother is former chief justice of Finland and her younger brother is the attorney general of Finland. While in school (all schools are controlled by the Lutheran state church), she was taught a well-rounded course, including six languages. After graduation she enrolled in a "pension," a private school for girls, to study French, in Switzerland. After the first year she went home for the summer, intending to continue with her studies the next term. But, while she was home she met the brother of her sister's fiance, fell in love with him, and married him. At the time, her husband was a pulp engineer who had studied previously in Vienna. They were married in 1904 and in 1919 came to America. Before they left, president Stahlberg gave a dinner for them in the palace formerly used by the Russian Czar, then used as have known."
