Seven bids were received with a range of less than $100,000 between the highest and lowest bids. The hospital officials have about $100,000 with which to start construction. Proposals for a hospital on the east of Orange county were first advanced by Rev. Raymond L. Bahams of Laguna Beach, in 1945. Due to war conditions and the great increase in construction costs at that time, the program would not be carried out. Under the leadership of Rev. O. Scott McFarland, of Santa Ana, $500,000 was raised by public subscription in Orange county and a gift of $100,000 was received from Penn L. Martin of Baltimore. But the program was further hastened until more funds were secured. Eventually an agreement was reached with the Hoag Foundation, created a few years ago by late George G. Hoag, one of the pioneers with J. C. Penney in building up of that great organization, and the hospitals were revised and enlarged and the name "Hoag Memorial Hospital, Presbyterian" was agreed upon with the Hoag Foundation providing the sum of $500,000 for proposed hospital building. Work on the project is expected start within 30 days and when it will need on the rapidly growing west section of Orange county. A. Herman posed the question "Are We Men or Are We Mice?" also dealing with the taxation problem, and John Knutzen closed the speaking portion of the meeting with an impromptu talk on "Florida vs. California as Citrus King." Speech evaluation was made by R. J. Allen assisted by Dr. Frank J. Ersck. Table Topic chairman Marcus Gartner led the group in a round table discussion of various current subjects. Royal Marten and John Knutzen were elected as official delegates to the San Diego convention of Toastmasters International. Veterans Planning State Aid Urged To Apply Now Veterans of World War II in Orange county who may be planning to apply for assistance from the state of California in pursuing their studies during the fall term should be sure they have established eligibility for the "Cal-Vet" educational aid program, according to Mr. W. D. Winterbourne, assistant county service officer. "By obtaining a certificate of eligibility now, these veterans can forestall costly delays at registration time," Mr. Winterbourne pointed out. "At the same time, they can start the machinery in motion for the necessary interviews, scheduling of payments, etc." Subsistence payments under the "Cal-Vets" program have been increased in some cases to $50 a month from $40, effective in September. The $10 increase is intended for use by the veteran-student, to purchase necessary books and supplies. In addition, the state may pay tuition and fees for the veteran. The maximum expenditure for all purposes in the case of any one veteran-student is $1000. To be eligible for state educational assistance, a veteran must have been born in California or have been a resident of this state at the time of entry into military service, and must have had at least 90 days on active duty prior to Jan. 1, 1947. The basic application form which is used for "Cal-Vet" educational aid also serves to establish the veteran's eligibility for the "Cal-Vet" farm and home financing plan. The same veteran may qualify for both benefits. Florida State University's football team has won three straight conference titles and is undefeated in three years of conference play.
