For when Dior endorsed the new trend to longer skirts that made it official, in the opinion of fashion-conscious Paris. But as to how far to let your hems out—you can be your own judge, and suit your own figure. Even Dior varies his hemlines, and some designers favor longer skirts than others, but 14 inches from the floor seems to be high water mark. With half a dozen important fashion houses still to open their collections, including Jacques Heim and Carven today, some trends are already firmly set, after having turned up in nearly all the early showings. The primly high neckline—sometimes not so prim with decouletage cut out underneath; the stiffened petticoat, flared out at the bottom or belling from the hip; the short, tight suit jacket; the tily waistline, natural hipline and uplifted bustline—all are universally popular. Dior doesn't agree on the question of collars (his are small, while those of the other houses are huge and often up-turned), belts (he likes half-belt martingales, tied in a bow behind, while nearly everybody else has shown very wide corsetel belts) or sleeves (others like them big). Alwynn shows a number of dresses with no belts at all, though they are tightly waisted, and Lanvin omits all buttons. Every designer has his own line of distinctive touches—Fath the bell silhouette; Schaiparelli "the shape" (generally a slim silhouette) Vacationers Return To Anaheim Friday Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Weaver, Lda Joan, Kathy and Randall, S. Dickel st., and Mrs. R. C. H returned Friday from a three-week vacation trip which took them through 14 states and in Canada. The tour included visits with friends and relatives in Lancaster, New York. Seeing Niagara Falls was one of the highlight of the trip. They returned throttle Pennsylvania, Mrs. Weaver's home state. In Detroit Mrs. Hein picked up a new automobile. On the return trip they visited realities near Chicago and also in Boone and Denver, Iowa. All of the states visited were very green and beautiful because of the abundance of rainy according to the travelers. Perfect Player Errors—Then Wins Yank Game (By The Associated Press) How does a guy who has been labelled "the perfect player" feel after pulling his first "rock" in a long and brilliant baseball career? "Foolish," admitted Joe DiMaggio, the great outfield star of the New York Yankees. For the first time since he came up to New York in 1936, DiMaggio felt like digging a huge hole in Yankee stadium and diving into it. The flawless flychaser, recognized for his ability to do the right thing at the right time, really pulled a dilly last night before 39,684 unbelieving spectators. The flawless flychaser, recognized for his ability to do the right thing at the right time, really pulled a dilly last night before 39,684 unbelieving spectators. Fortunately for him, the Yankees came on to win—beating the Detroit Tigers, 5-4—to minimize DiMaggio's mental lapse. The victory increased the Yanks' first-place margin to 2½ games over the idle Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox. It was New York's 33rd victory in 43 home games. This is the sequence of events that led to DiMaggio's "rock." The score was tied 2-2 when the Tigers came to bat in the eighth. Doubles by Gerry Priddy and George Kell with one out put the Tigers in front, 3-2. Steve Souchock, an ex-Yankee, flied deep to DiMaggio. Kell tagged up and headed for third. DiMaggio made no attempt to head him off. Instead, he calmly began to jog toward the Yankee dugout with the ball in his right hand. Dick Bartell, alert Tiger third base coach, took in the situation at a glance and waved Kell plateward. Joe finally understood why his mates were yelling at and waving to him. But by then it was too late. Kell had scored the second run of the inning. "I thought it was the third out," explained the embarrassed Yankee clipper later.
