No less a designer than Jane Derby, noted for elegance and conservative good taste, is showing full-skirted suits for fall, accompanied by petticoats not only but ruffled and stiffened with horsehair hems but also quilted. A sensation of her collection shown today to the visiting fashion press, is a suit of mauve tweed with plum velvet collar and cuffs. The skirt flares like a morning glory, at the bottom and there is petticoat of plum-colored quilting satin, designed to peek out in a beguiling manner when the wearer mounts a high step or crosses her knees. Startling after a year of straight line, skin-tight skirts, the new shouette may be all to the good, I may make girls study up on the feminine arts and graces once more, learn how to swish a petticoat and flirt a fan and stop booing all the clothes from their brothers' wardrobes. While most designers are showing one or two full-skirted suits for fall, Mrs. Derby shows a majority of her styles with flaring hemlines and makes petticoats to go with all of them. Also in today's fashion line was Christian Dior, the Parisian credited with fathering the "new look" of several years ago. Dior now appears to prefer the paree ROUGH MOMENT FOR PERMANENT—WAF Pvt. Constance K. Hassel, of Cleveland, demonstrates what happens to a girl's curls when she touches a 250,000-volt atomic generator, in exhibit at Armed Forces Week Show, New York City. Daughter Fetes Mother at Party Sharon White, seven year old daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Charles White of Main st., surprised her parents and her mother's friends when she very efficiently planned a party in honor of her mother's birthday, June 9, at 3 o'clock. The guests invited to this very special occasion were Mmes. Ellijah Briggs, Mrs. Lewis McBratney, Ralph Vipond and Leonard Jennings, who assisted the young hostess serving a birthday cake which she had asked Mrs. Briggs to make, fruit salad, ice cream and punch. The clinic is maintained by the Orange County Health Dept., with Emma B. Wharton, M.D., in charge. She is assisted by Mrs. Agnes Espinosa of Placentia who serves as interpreter and counselor. Mrs. Earl Fortney of 11582 S. Western, P.T.A. president of the Alamitos elementary school, is assisted by Mrs. Frank Carver from Bryant ave. They have donated their time for the past three and a half years at the clinic. Forced to discontinue their services, they have sent out an appeal for replacement to the women of Stanton. Mrs. King Rutledge and her sister, Mrs. Kathine Prigge who is visiting here from Denver, Colo., filled in this To Organize First Southern Baptist Church Invitations have been sent to the Calvary association of Southern Baptists for pastors and brethren to attend a meeting here for the purpose of forming a council to organize the First Southern Baptist church of Anaheim. The meeting is to be held in the VFW hall, 106 N. Philadelphia st., July 15 at 2:30 p.m. The public is invited to the meeting. Regular services are held at the VFW hall every Sunday. Rev. E. H. Moom, general missionary and acting pastor has chosen as his subject Sunday, "What Is a New Testament Church." Home-Makers' Forum By JOAN S. WHITE Gazette Home Economist The "know-how" of food buying saves time and money for the home-maker. Since those are the two items we seem to have the least of these days, let's talk over the recommended ways of stretching our food dollars. The wise home-maker sits down with pencil and paper and plans her menus a week at a time. She considers the family's like and dislikes and their dietary requirements for good health first and foremost. Generally speaking, folks do not need to eat quite as much in hot weather as they do when the weather is chilly, but allowing for the change in temperature, we have to remember that increased outdoor activity like that of summer sports and never-a-dull minute vacations call for a cheese, green leafy vegetable fruit, fresh or canned, and who-grain cereals. "But I would never be able to think of enough menus for a week," says the uninitiated. That is your trouble, suggestion number two will help you Watch for the advertised specials of Anaheim's leading food markets as they appear in the Anaheim Gazette. These will list the foods that are plentiful and in season and enable you to take advantage of special values. Safeway's values are always sweet music to your pocket boots. This week there are excellent buys on fresh corn, Elber peaches, desert grown grapefruit and the medium size Valencia c Alamitos elementary school, is assisted by Mrs. Frank Carver from Bryant ave. Announcement came today that the first session of the Brownie Day Camp at Hillcrest park in Fullerton is closed, but that the second period is open and registration will be held until July 27. The second session for the second and third graders starts July 31 and will be held on August 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9. In order to relieve confusion Mrs. Elmer Peter requests parents to send the fee of $3.25 to her home at 1024 W. Center st., Anaheim. If personal contact is desired she would like to receive calls after July 23. Mrs. Clavfe will drive the bus from the Scout House over to Fullerton and the leaving time is set for 9 a.m. Youth Program Underway Here As part of a program to keep interests of the young people of the area directed toward sports and religion, Rev. Charles White of the Stanton Community church has initiated a weekly evening program that started Tuesday, July 3 at 6:30 with recreation. At 8 o'clock an excellent picture, "Decision," was viewed, after which popcorn and root beer were served. The successful affair was repeated Tuesday evening with 60 attendees. A movie of the Personal Mention Mr. and Mrs. Nevan S. Von Rohr have returned from their honeymoon and are at home at 13231 Newland ave., Sun Gardens. They were married June 15 at Greenwich Wedding chapel in Naples and flew to Mexico City and on to Acapulca where the bridegroom caught the largest sailfish of the season, weighing 132 pounds. Mrs. Von Rohr was formerly Mrs. Margaret Stone Lorenz of 6901 E. Ocean, Belmont Shore. Von Rohr is the owner of the Stoner Rubber Co., 7061 E. Monroe, Stanton, that manufacture war materials. To vary the way you serve elbow macaroni add a little catsup or chill sauce to it after you have cooked and drained it; put it in a baking dish, sprinkle with grated cheese, and reheat and brown in the oven. More About Greatest Kansas levee breaks and covered the area to a depth of six feet or more. Two more breaks poured water into North Lawrence, 30 miles downstream. The State university is on a high hill and was not affected by the flood. The business district at Abiler was an island and at Manhattan only the tops of parking meter showed above the water that swirled through the business section. Two Kansas river bridges collapsed today at Topeka as the stream swelled toward an estimated 33.6 foot crest. The river already was at the 32 foot start today and Richard Garrett, weather forecaster, said the 33.6 foot forecast did not take into account more than three inches of rain that fell during the night. Two other bridges remain ov green peppers or in sandwich spreads. Peanut butter is a good supplement to the meat proteins, and eggs and cheese are good inexpensive meat substitutes. The wise shopper puts the emphasis on quality. She reads the labels to see just what she is getting for her money. It is a good idea to check grades, especially of canned fruits and vegetables. Guess work is eliminated at Alpha Beta because of the famous "Food Club" brand. Food Club products have really "caught on" at Alpha Beta and everyone says that the quality is always the best. You will be surprised at the low prices too. Just as the name implies, the manufacturers are really a club. It is a cooperative venture just like the well known dairy cooperatives in the middle west. The quality is tops whether it's mayonnaise, flour, tomato juice or gelatin. Food Club is a brand you can depend on. Have you served kidney stew lately, or chop suey, curried lamb, salmon loaf, puffy omelet, or tamale pie? They are all relatively inexpensive main dishes that make a nice change. Here is another suggestion for a money-saver that goes well with spinach, perhaps an apple and raisin salad, and a fruit whip for dessert. EGGARONI 4 hard cooked eggs 2 tablespoons fat 2 tablespoons flour 1½ cups milk 1 teaspoon minced onion 1½ cups cooked macaroni 2 tomatoes Seasonings Breadcrumbs Cut the eggs in quarters. Make a white sauce by melting the fat and blending in flour. Add milk slowly and cook until thickened, stirring constantly. Add the other ingredients except tomatoes and crumbs. Pour into a greased caserole dish. Cut tomatoes into quarters, and press into top of mixture, leaving skin surface exposed. Mix the breadcrumbs with a little melted fat and sprinkle over the top. Bake at 350 degrees for about a half hour or until tomatoes are tender. Grated cheese may be substituted for tomatoes. Serves four. R. W. Marvin of 1014 W. The boat crews reported hundreds of stranded residents who ignored the evacuation order were appealing for help. They were banging on dishpans, firing shotguns, using hog calls, waving bedsheets and calling on any other means they could devise to attract attention. 'SCOTTSBORO BOY' ARRESTED ALBANY, N. Y. (P)—A negro, who identified himself as one of the "Scottsboro boys," was held here today on a first-degree rape charge, and Alabama authorities said they would list him as a parole violator. The man, booked as James Wright, 39, was accused of raping a 13-year-old negro girl in her home here. He pleaded innocent in police court yesterday, and was jailed pending an examination July 19. City Dollar Day Set for Aug. 2 By Retail Group Dollar Day for Anaheim was set for Thursday, Aug. 2, at a meeting of the Refall Merchants division of the Chamber of Commerce held this morning in the Chamber offices. Other business aired at the session included the consideration of a new type of check protection system presented by Al Raymond, manager of the Northern Orange County Credit association. The system would require persons cashing a check to place an invisible thumb print over the amount of the check that could chemically be developed should the check prove worthless. The group consensus of opinion was that the system had merit, but was left to the discretion of individual merchants.
