Dawson So Far Ahead He Takes Vacation from Round Robin Tourney Don Dawson, who is leaving town on vacation for several weeks, assured himself of a top spot in the Boy's singles round robin tournament being staged by the City Recreation department, regardless of what happens while he is gone, by building up his win streak to an even dozen matches with no defeats. On Wednesday he added George Legg, Steve Williams, and David Evans to his list of victims with only Evans being able to get a single game out of the three sets. Karen Lenain continued to lead the girl's division with seven straight wins when she defeated Margaret Rodin 6-1 and Vicky Schneider 6-0. Vicky then defeated Carol Ausburn 6-3 to take away some of the sting of her first loss. Rita Flynn defeated Arvilla Legg 6-0, but lost a heart-breaking match to Carol Swank by a score of 8-6. Anne Williams defeated Sharon Rodin 6-2 to run her victories up to five straight with no losses. In the final girl's singles for the day Carol Swank defeated Arvilla Legg and Vicky Schneider in love sets. Jimmy Dunton pulled out of the slump in which he has been playing to beal John Kohlenberger 6-3 and David Evans 6-2. John's other brother, Don, took a love set from George Legg, defeated Ronnie Swank 6-1, but lost to Merle Meyer 6-0. Gary Schilling took John Kohlenberger by a 6-3 count, but lost to Lee Risner, 6-4. Risner also defeated Winfred Glaskox 6-0. Merle Meyer took two love sets from David Evans and Ronald Swank. Old Sal Gets Last Laugh at Rickey NEW YORK (P)—Sal Maglie, the pitcher who got credit for the National league's all-star victory, and who also gets a lot of credit for the Giant's showing this season, visited the Cardinals' tryout camp some 15 years ago and begged to sign up for $65 a month. Branch Rickey and Scout Pop Kelchner looked Sal over and decided he couldn't win in Class D ball... Maybe it wasn't such bad judgment. In 1943-44 Sal was pitching for Welland, Ont., in the Niagara district league and the Canadian teams were pounding him pretty hard. CINA-CAR DRIVE-IN THEATRE 6612 Lincoln Ave. Out Center, 5 Mi. The Rainiers, who now lead the pack by five fat games as a result of their successful invasion of San Francisco, are showing no sign of a let-up. To make matters even more pleasant, perhaps, for Hornsby's horrors, they play the Seals again starting Friday, this time at Seattle. Seattle dusted off San Francisco, 5-2, last night to win four games in the series of five. Marv Grissom, the league's winningest flinger, racked up number 14 for the season via an eight hitter. The second place Hollywood Stars fell five games behind by succumbing to Portland, 3-2. The Ports came from behind to win it in the eighth on a rally launched by Joe Brovia's 22nd homer of the year. Sacramento maintained its precarious perch in third place by goose egging Los Angeles, 2-0. It took the Solon's pitcher, Glenn Elliott, just one hour and 27 minutes to complete his four hitter before a crowd of only 1310. San Diego's Bob Kerrigan also cranked up a 2-0 shutout, beating fourth place Oakland Acorns on another four hitter. Only one Oak runner got as far as third base. The same teams play again in the series opening Friday, but at opposite ballparks. Hollywood plays at Portland, Sacramento at Los Angeles, San Francisco at Seattle, and San Diego at Oakland. The latter two are billed for a double header. NEW YORK (UP) — Rex Layne and Rocky Marciano each hopeful of injecting young blood into the heavyweight championship picture, trade punches tonight in what promises to be 10 rounds or less of real slugging at Madison Square Garden. A shot at the heavyweight title awaits the winner. And the men who make the betting odds figure it’ll be Layne. He is the 8½ to 5 choice. The 23-year-old Layne, fisticip pride of the Rockies from Lewis-ton, Utah, and the likeable, quiet 26-year-old Marciano from Brockton, Mass., have almost identical records. Layne’s record shows 34 victories, one setback, two draws and 24 knockouts. Marciano has stepped into the ring for 35 scraps and climbed out with 30 knockouts and five decisions. But the experts like Layne because of the caliber of opponents he has met. They like the way the chunky, aggressive youngster outgamed aging Jersey Joe Wolcott and came off the floor to stop hard-hitting Bob Satterfield. Some 15,000 fans are expected to pack the Garden. If they do, the gate will run between $100,000 and $250,000. There will be no home television or radio broadcast. Civilian Rifle National Clay Courts Tourney Under Way Now CHICAGO (UP)—Halted yesterday by rain, the national clay courts tennis tourney resumed today with third and quarterfinal round men’s play booked at the River Forest courts. The spotlight fell on two third round matches. One sent Jiro Kumamaru of Japan’s Davis Cup team against Seymour Greenberg of Chicago, twice a clay courts titlist. The other bracketed Hamilton Richardson of Baton Rouge, La., the nation’s No. 1 junior, and Hugh Stewart, Los Angeles, who shares the national collegiate doubles crown. Art Larson of San Leandro, Calif., top-seeded in the tournament, faces unseeded Fred Hagist of Sacramento, Calif., while No. 2 seeded Herb Flam, defending champion from Beverly Hills, Calif., takes on one-time British Davis Cupper, Charley Hare, now of Chicago. The next two weeks in the American race will go a long way toward settling the pennant, and the Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians well know it. Boston, one game back of the leading White Sox, tackles Chicago in the main dish as hostilities resume with a twi-night double-header at Comiskey park. Chicago has a 14-game home stand, meeting all four of the eastern clubs on their western tour. The other top drawer attraction is a night game at Cleveland, where the New York Yankees hope to get back on the victory trail after their disastrous experience at Boston where they dropped three straight last week-end. New York is two games behind Chicago, while the Indians are four. He is Andy Robustelli, an end from Arnold college, Milford, Conn. He was snatched by the Los Angeles Rams yesterday right out of the arms of the Montreal Alouettes. "He visited Montreal, but didn't like it up there so decided to play with the Rams," his mother explained. The Rams also announced the signing of another rookie wingman, Dock Moe of Loyola University, Los Angeles. Attlessey Wins 110 Meter Highs in 14.8 PARIS (UP)—American track and field stars, giving a demonstration of what they hope to accomplish in the Olympic games next year at Helsinki, have scored another one-sided victory here. The touring Americans captured eight of 13 events in competition with French athletes. Parry O'Brien, Santa Monica, Calif., tossed the shot 52 feet, 11 inches, then got third in the discus won by Dickie Doyle of Missoula, Mont., with a heave of 166 feet four inches. Dick Attlessey of Bell, Calif., took the 110 meter hurdles in 14.8. Tantamount, who set a new track record at Hollywood Park for the mile on Tuesday at 1.35 flat. S. Navy ships continued today an almost hopeless search for a crewman who toppled yesterday from the second place, sloop in the 2,225-mile Los Angeles-to-Honolulu yacht race. Crewman Ted Sierks of Availon, Calif., fell overboard from the 72-foot sloop L'Apache some 820 miles northeast of Honolulu. L'Apache is owned and skippered by Phyllis B. Brunson of Hollywood, only woman skipper in the race. L'Apache was about 105 miles behind the leader, Dick Rheem's 97-foot schooner, Morning Star, of Los Angeles. Morning Star was speeding at a clip that could break her own 1949 record for the crossing. In third place was the 53-foot yawl Skylark, owned by Commodore Don Ayre of Los Angeles. It was reported 880 miles from Honolulu. Behind the three leaders were Walter Trotta, 54-foot yawl Funny-tons difficulties. The Hawaiian Sea Frontier sent an escort carrier and seven destroyers into the area yesterday to search for Sierks. A B-17 search and rescue plane from Hickam Air Base joined the hunt. The Matson freighter Hawaiian Packer, five racing yachts and pasing air and surface craft also searched. After three fruitless hours the escort carrier, four destroyers and the B-17 withdrew. Three destroyer escorts stayed on the scene, searching into the night. Yachtsmen held little hope of finding Sierks. One said "it will be a miracle if we find him, but we're going to keep trying." Five yachts dropped out of the race to aid in the search. They are the Skylark, Evening Star, Chiriqui, Fairweather and Dragoon. L'Apache sent word there was no point in their remaining behind, but at last reports they were still on the scene. Rheem reported last night from the leading yacht, Morning Star, that because of communications facilities he had not known of the mishap until ten hours after it happened. Tamale’s Cool as They Bang Out Only Two Hits in Loss to Magnolia Pete Guadan pitched a two hitter as Magnolia Stars trounced Alex Tamale last night in the first and only game last night at the City park as Lehr’s Service forfeited to Cypress VFW in the second game. The loss moved Alex Tamale back into a second place tie with Grace Lutheran and moved the Merchants a game and a half out in front. Guadan had 15 strike outs and gave up one of the hits in the third to Roy Pina and in the fourth gave up a double to Everett MacDonald. The Stars scored three runs in the first on a single by Jim Romero, double by Fred Magdalero, an error and a single by Raul Moran. In the third they added two more on a walk and a single by Tom Jacques and Henry Torres. In the fifth they added one more on singles by Tom Jacques and Raul Moran. A message from L'Apache to the B-17, intercepted by Freeman Lang, Honolulu yachtsman and communications man, said Sierk's hands were slashed badly when he grabbed at the sloop's log line as he fell. He was bleeding badly when he disappeared. Crewmen threw a life ring toward him but rolling swells blotted him from view. "We don't know if he got it," the message said.
