Joseph Edward Revere, on July 10, 1846. TRANSITION—Several marked changes in Orange county agricultural development have been noted in the last one hundred years. At one time during the Spanish-Mexican period of its development, this part of the county was part of Los Angeles, the “queen of the cow counties.” Through the founding of municipalities and the development of agriculture, the once vast expanses were fenced and cattle disappeared from the scene. SUGAR—Although Anaheim, itself, was never actually part of the vast sugar beet industry, Orange county just before and after the turn of the century was one of the richest sugar beet producing areas in the country. Beets seem to thrive in the light, alkaline soil that makes up a vast section of the county. At the height of the sugar beet era, Anaheim built a sugar factory. The sugar beet has virtually passed from the Orange county scene. No longer are those wagon ramps along the railroad sidings in evidence. Anaheim's sugar factory has been converted into an industrial alcohol plant. Plants at Los Alamitos, Santa Ana and elsewhere have been abandoned or converted. Only one sugar factory remains. The plant must ship its beets from Imperial valley in order to keep operating. It too, is destined to vanish from the scene. BEANS—Beans and alfalfa have replaced the sugar beet as a major crop in Orange county. Profits from both crops are greater. But as the land area needed for the extensive production shrinks through the expansion of housing, these crops will someday be unprofitable. DAIRYING—Orange county has become one of the chief dairying centers in Southern California. As the dairy industry was forced east from the southwestern Los Angeles sector, Orange county's dairying industry grew. Expensive land, however, is making it harder for the dairymen to establish, and consequently many of them are moving out toward Antelope Valley. The dairy industry, second only to the citrus industry, must truck become one of the chief dairying centers in Southern California. As the dairy industry was forced east from the southwestern Los Angeles sector, Orange county's dairying industry grew. Expensive land, however, is making it harder for the dairy-men to establish, and consequently many of them are moving out toward Antelope Valley.
