Contractors Study Plans for New Hoag Memorial Hospital at Beach Copies of the plans and specifications of the Hoag Memorial hospital Presbyterian, have been requested by many representative contractors, according to H. C. Chambers, well known architect of Los Angeles who has prepared the plans, for the institution at Newport Beach. Interest in the bidding is keen and Chambers expects a satisfactory number of bids when they are officially opened July 27 at the city hall, Newport Beach. Members of the Building committee of the hospital will be on hand for the opening of bids at 2:30 on the 27th according to George G. Hoag, acting chairman in the absence of President John A. Murdy, Jr., now on a tour of Europe. Others on the building committee are Stephen Griset, Santa Ana, Clarence Lush of Orange, Wm. F. Kimes of Newport Beach and Chester Hawk, secretary to the board. Economy in construction costs is anticipated because the building will be single story, the location is well suited easy construction, and the extreme care and detail with which the plans and specifications have been prepared, making the task convenient for the builder. Materials required for the project should not be difficult to obtain, according to Mr. Hoag, and no features are included to make construction expensive. Some of the more important matters discussed in this article include: Four Year Old Boy Shoots Mother and Sister, Two Years STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga., U.P. A young mother and her two-year-old daughter were shot yesterday during a hog chase by her exasperated four-year-old son. DeKalb county, Police Capt. Fred Howard said Mrs. Margaret Wood, 23, was holding her daughter Janice, and with the aid of son Danny, was trying unsuccessfully to corner a hog. Finally, Howard continued, young Danny picked up a rifle and announced his intention of shooting the animal. He fired and the bullet passed through young Janice, inflicting flesh wounds, and struck Mrs. Wood in the abdomen. The mother was in serious condition at Grady hospital. MORE ABOUT ... Ice-Breaker Talks Featured at Meet Of Toastmasters The Anaheim Toastmasters club featured two of the new members giving their "Ice Breaker" speech at their regular dinner meeting last night. The speaking portion of the meeting was under the guidance of John Knuzen, Toastmaster; the evening who presented Roy Martin as the first speaker; Martin's topic "Prognostication" cited events in early American history as examples of "Hunches" warning out over cold reasoning. Earl Jordan was the second speaker presenting the subject Am a Lucky Man," a brief autobiography, given in an unusual manner. Third speaker, Wall Knott, gave an interesting sketch of "My Grandmother," portraying the hardships endured by members of the covered war train by which she came to California. R. H. Allen closed this part of the program with an improvised talk on "Can You Explain Everything," a discussion of problems teaching young people to be careful. Dr. Kenneth Heuler was Evacuator, and Mark Gartner was Timkeeper. The Table Topic was given by R. A. Hermann on the subject "The Proposed Increased Tax and Its Effects on American Life." The Invocation was given by Guy Tester, and the meeting under the chairmanship of Leo Taylor, president Harold Hall, the guest of Marion Pickel. Five Years, $10,000 Fine and Back Tax of $250,000 Among Cohen Debts LOS ANGELES (P)—Gambler Micked Cohen has plenty of time in jail today to contemplate his debt to Uncle Sam. It's a big one, adding up this way: five years in the penitentiary and $10,000 fine for income tax evasion; the taxes he was charged with evading, $156,123 for 1046, 1947 and 1948, plus penalties and interest, making nearly $250,000; court costs of his trial which might tote up to $100,000. His lawyers said the 37-year-old gambler will appeal. They probably will file formal notice today. Cohen presumably can get out of the pokey while the appeal is pending. If and when he does serve the time, he can apply for probation after serving one-third of it, or one year and eight months. The pudgy, Brooklyn-born Los Angeles underworld figure didn't appear ruffled as Judge Ben Harrison sentenced him yesterday. His petite wife, Layonne, told newsmen she expected a heavier sentence "because of prejudice." MORE ABOUT ... As soon as they passed the barbed wire barrier into the helicopter lot, they were surrounded by a shouting, milling mob of photographers—50 at the very least. Flashbulbs flickered like lightning and the miniature camera workers closed in for the kill. This put them in front of the larger Speed Graphic men and there were blistering exchanges. For Health, Eat California Fruit MORE ABOUT ... Military Build-up Continued from Page 1 until it is known to what extent Germany will co-operate militarily and politically with the free world. Rep. Mansfield (D-Mont.) called Mr. Truman's proposal "a step in the right direction." "I am in favor of continuing to build up our defenses regardless of what happens in Korea," Connally told reporters. He said, however, he would not be surprised if a Korean ceasefire—should it develop—is followed by demands in Congress for substantial cuts in the proposed $8,500,000,000 foreign aid program. The program would authorize a $6,300,000,000 military outlay, mostly for Western Europe. There already have been proposals from both Democrats and Republicans for slashes of $2,000,000,000 or more in the overall total. Connally indicated he will oppose the building being single story, the location is well-suited easy construction, and the extreme care and detail with which the plans and specifications have been prepared, making the task convenient for the builder. Materials required for the project should not be difficult to obtain, according to Mr. Hoag, and no features are included to make construction expensive. Some of the more important materials required in quantity for the hospital building are, 5000 square feet of plywood, 6700 barrels of cement, 25 tons of steel pipe, 50 tons of pipe soil and fittings, 240 tons of reinforcing steel and 100 tons of steel in shapes and sheets. There will be 1860 electric outlets connected by 30,000 feet of conduit. Seven hundred lighting fixtures will be required, and plumbing fixtures to the number of 250 will be in the main building which has an imposing frontage of 350 feet overall from east to west, with a height of 45 feet from ground-level to roof ridge. The pudgy, Brooklyn-born Los Angeles underworld figure didn't appear ruffled as Judge Ben Harrison sentenced him yesterday. His petite wife, Layonne, told newsmen she expected a heavier sentence "because of prejudice." She was indicted with him on the evasion charge, but the government dropped the case against her in mid-trial. Cohen was convicted June 20 by a jury on three counts of evasion and one of making a false statement. Judge Harrison sentenced him to five years on each count, the maximum, but ordered the sentences to run concurrently. He also levied the maximum $10,000 fine on each count but said one $10,000 payment could square it for the four counts. Cohen, who says he's broke could take a pauper's oath and serve an extra 30 days in lieu of the fine. Collector of Internal Revenue Robert A. Biddell said he is awaiting orders from Washington about attempting to collect the back taxes and penalties and trial costs from Cohen. This is normally a civil proceeding separate from the criminal case. PRINCESS HAS MEASLES LONDON (UK)—Princess Margaret has German measles, Buckingham Palace disclosed today. Official circles indicated they believed Mossadegh would accept President's offer to send Harman to avoid offending American public opinion—even though he may not back down on his nationalization aims. But the atmosphere was cleared little after A. E. Mason, AIOC general manager, said yesterday that the British staff would remain indefinitely. Today the same spokesman said, however, that operations may run longer. But he insisted that British workers are unhappy with the thought of sticking it out under the threat of nationalization, which would make them virtually employees of the Iranian government.
