WEATHERWISE—What is so rare as a day in June? A sunny day in June.
NEWSWISE—La Habra voters crushed a proposed million-dollar elementary school bond issue. The bond issue was crushed 581 to 34... Laguna Beach voters cast 1348 votes in an election that turned down an increase in the unified school district taxes... First Annual Citrus Jubilee was climaxed at Placentia Friday night when Benee Cefalu, the California Fruit Growers "Sunkist Girl" visited the home of California's Valencia Orange... Pacific Telephone and Telegraph employees were out on strike early last week when some 200 or so "outside workers" picked company installations. Telephone service, however, went on uninterrupted...

Feller Tosses No-Hitter at Tigers; Yanks in First Spot with Majors
By The Associated Press
Bob Feller, king of active major league pitchers, sits on a pedestal today as the only modern day hurler with three no-hit games to his credit.
The 32-year-old Cleveland righthander, making a great comeback after two mediocre seasons, held Detroit without a hit yesterday as he pitched the Indians to a 2-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. The Tigers were limited to only four hits all day as rookie Bob Chakales shut them out, 2-0, in the nightcap.
Feller's performance capped an afternoon of brilliant pitching that included a lost one-hitter, a pair of two-hitters and a four-hitter. Bob's no-hit masterpiece overshadowed the Chicago White Sox fall out of the American league lead and Bobby Doerr's feat of making his 2000th hit as a Boston Red socker.
Compared to Feller's achievement, Ed Lopat's six-hitter wasn't much, but it was good enough to give New York a 5-2 triumph over Boston and move the Yankees into first place, four percentage points above the White Sox. It was Lopat's 11th win against three losses.
Ned Garver's two-hit twirling safe on shotstop Ray Boone's error. Lipon stole second, sent third when Feller threw wild an attempted pickoff, and scored on George Kell's long fly. Luther drove in both Cleveland runs. It was the 11th victory for Feller who has lost but twice the season.
Ecuador has vast untapped timber resources.

Growers "Sunkist Girl" visited the home of California's Valencia Orange... Pacific Telephone and Telegraph employees were out on strike early last week when some 800 or so "outside workers" picketed company installations. Telephone service, however, went on uninterrupted.
CIVIC—The board of supervisors whacked $114,687 off the preliminary budgets—a saving of two or three cents on the tax rate for each $100 assessed valuation.
COURTOPIX—Dr. William Peake, 45-year-old Long Beach psychiatrist, will never be brought to trial. He committed suicide by swallowing nearly 100 sleeping pills in a Los Angeles hotel room... Murder charges against Mrs. Cordellia Green, 23, were dropped when she pleaded guilty to felony assault of her three-month-old daughter. She will have a probation hearing July 13... Superior Court Judge Baympson denied Rinshed-Mason Company's demand that it be given back the $53,000 it paid for a Santa Ana building which it subsequently found it could not use.
59, 60, 61—Three more names were added to the violent highway death toll. Ralph A. Wilhelm, 49-year-old driver, was killed in an intersection collision. Donald Hardin, 18, a passenger in the other car also died as a result of the accident at Heil and Bolsa Chica... Earlier last week a Marine's wife—Mrs. Virginia Mae de Frates, 29—lost control of her car which skidded and flipped over against a culvert on Manslaughter Blvd. near Orangethorpe.
SPORTSWEEK—Bert Haysom, Santa Ana's pitching sensation, flew back to Pittsburgh for a conference with baseball's mahatma, Branch Rickey. Goldie Holt is said to have offered a $17,000 bonus for the lad's signature on a Brooklyn contract... Orange High is to get Landon Carter, 440 star, next year... The Orange Lionettes continue to rack up victory after victory in the Girls Softball league. Marlon Hill's Buena Park Lynx are doing right well on their eastern tri-month that is
Compared to Feller's achievement, Ed Lopat's six-hitter wasn't much, but it was good enough to give New York a 5-2 triumph over Boston and move the Yankees into first place, four percentage points above the White Sox. It was Lopat's 11th win against three losses.
Ned Garver's two-hit twirling gave the St. Louis Browns a 3-1 nightcap victory after Chicago had won an 11-inning opener, 2-1, on Minny Minoso's homer.
It dropped the White Sox out of first place for the first time since May 28.
Meyer Gives Up One
Rust Meyer held Brooklyn to one hit but the Dodgers beat his Philadelphia Phils, 2-0. Don Newcombe pitched a seven-hitter for Brooklyn. Pee Wee Reese got the Dodgers' lone blow off the temperamental righthander. It was a booming third inning triple that followed walks to Roy Campanella and Cal Abrams, accounting for the only runs of the game.
Paul Minner handcuffed Cincinnati with two singles in the opener as the Chicago Cubs swept a doubleheader from the Reds, 7-0 and 7-5. Larry Jansen scattered seven hits in pitching the New York Giants to a 4-1 win over Boston's Braves.
In the only games where pitching did not shine, the Philadelphia Athletics downed the Washington Senators twice, 10-7 and 2-2 and the St. Louis Cardinals whipped the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-4 in 12 innings. Elmer Valo hit three homers for the A's.
In pitching his third no-hitter, Feller realized a five-year dream. It was on April 30, 1946, just after he had held the Yankees hitless, that he set a third no-hitter as his goal.
"I really wanted to get it," Bob said yesterday, "because only one man in modern baseball has done it—Cy Young."
Actually, Feller is the first to pitch three no-hitters in this century. Larry Corcoran hurled three for Chicago in the national league in 1880, 1882 and 1884; and Young's three were in 1897, 1904 and 1908.
Feller's first no-hitter was open-and Bobby Doerr's rest of making his 200th hit as a Boston Red socker.

flew back to Pittsburgh for a conference with baseball's mahatma, Branch Rickey. Goldie Holt is said to have offered a $17,000 bonus for the lad's signature on a Brooklyn contract... Orange High is to get Landon Carter, 440 star, next year. The Orange Lionettes continue to rack up victory after victory in the Girls Softball league. Marlon Hill's Buena Park Lynx are doing right well on their eastern trip—that is all the games that aren't rained out.
TOPIPX—Chate Van Moorebeke is to be congratulated for the fine way he is handling the Anaheim Legion baseball team. It is undoubtedly one of the best Anaheim baseball teams ever fielded. Joel Esparraza is really spanking the ball as is Hal Conrad of Fullerton. Dick Ramella and Hal Wielhorn of Anaheim are two of the best junior Legion pitchers this season. Only Buena Park's Gene Rosen, who plays for Fullerton, boast a better record... It's just as we told you, Anaheim may not win the title this year, but they'll make it mighty rough on a lot of teams. Next year the Ken Eckels' Bucky Walters' coached Fullerton monopoly is likely to end...
VITAL STATISTICS—Robert Parker, 20, and Marlene Lilley, 17, made a trip to the marriage license bureau. She was the 1950 Fullerton Community Fair Queen. John Vuksonovich and Mary Ann Roth said their vows yesterday... Harold Hund and Barbara Brown are also taking up light housekeeping. Noel Sweeney has an heir. Papa is the well-known lunar league pitcher... The Jack Dorsetts have a daughter... Fred
Brewer welcomed a son last week, while Herculano Palacios added a daughter to his family... Death claimed William Dxke, 77, an Anaheimer of 47 years' standing... Henry Bastian, 88, an Anaheimer for 31 years, died... Mrs. Julia Mariner, 88... and Mrs. Gettrude Tennyson, 63, also came to the end of the long, long trail...
