4 Anaheim Gazette THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. —Roman. 12:21. CALIFORNIANA — The panic that prevailed throughout the United States engulfed Southern California. The Riverside Banking company folded June 14, 1833. The following week four Los Angeles banks suspended operations. Recovery from this depression was not felt until 1838. PERSONALITIES—In the passing of Charles Ferguson, Daystrom vice president, Anaheim lost one of its most ardent boosters. He foresaw a brilliant industrial future for Anaheim and its environs. For the sake of the record, let's get it straight—Frederick L. Larson who passed on after a lengthy illness did not start the Sanitary Laundry and Dry Cleaning company as press reports would have us believe. The former Anaheim laundryman bought out A. W. and K. M. Cleaver who founded the Sanitary Laundry. Incidentally, those who knew him will tell you that A. W. M. Cleaver who founded the Sanitary Laundry. Incidentally, those who knew him will tell you that A. W. Cleaver was an interesting personality. CRUSADER—Ted Kuchel has been hammering away at the keys of his typewriter for a long time, telling the citrus grower not to be a sucker. He has often beef on the receiving end of a barrage of harsh words from those who are parasites on the citrus industry. Now, the Eadington Fruit company backs the publisher of Orange county's pioneer newspaper by closing down its operations until the man who produces the fruit can get a just and adequate return for his efforts. LINES-O-TYPE—Robert Lee Wurgatt found an old friend, Gurman Hoppe, unfriendly. Ysee, the judge fined the Anaheimer $30 for hot rodding over the Hillcrest Park lawns without a license. Doug Wheeler the Buena Park Lynx manager, is operating a gas station in Fullerton. Hope business is better than the team... Ken Penner, the Cardinal talent scout, has invited Santi Ana's Bert Haysom to make a trip with the Freno Cardinals... Incidentally, the grapevine has it that Jack Ramsey signed on the dotted line for a consideration of $5,000 and is working for $265 a month. Wendell Pickens, the Orange Coast college athletic director could teach Dale Carnegie a few things on "Wrining Friends and Influencing People." Pickens is trying—shall we say—to interest Darren House, Rudy Caillis and Russell Heman on the advantages of Orange Coast. VIGNETTE—Lee Albert Kavanagh missed his calling. He should have been an entomologist. For six months now he has been patiently studying the life and habits of a black widow spider he keeps The Glory of the Garden, Patioce Strong; Watch Out for the Weather; Jacqueline Berke and Vivian Wilson; Circus Doctor, J. He should have been an entomologist. For six months now he has been patiently studying the life and habits of a black widow spider he keeps in a large mustard jar. Kavanagh is also studying the life and habits of insects in that jar—but for some reason or other, the widow ends these studies before they actually begin by dining on her jarmates. When the spider failed to produce one of those small cotton-like egg sacs, "Shotgun" did something about it. He dug through a woodpile and found several spider egg sacs which he promptly put into the jar. Duly they hatched. Thousands of tiny, spec-sized spiders seemed to ooze out of the sacs. Now Kavanagh is wondering what will happen. TALENT—W. B. Corbett, Orange county's first man of radio, tells me that Richard Warner Borst, the retired professor of humanities at Fjaysee is going to try newspapering for relaxation. Better he should write the great American novel... The passing of Yorba Linda's great editor, Charles Mille Vernon, reminds us of the great newspaperman who came from the peaceful quiet rural surroundings... There was Olyde Simmons, prominent agriculture editor and journalist, who died a couple of years ago... Then there was Henry Hodges. Mother Hurls Newborn Baby from Apartment Window NEW YORK (UP)—A 14-year-old girl gave birth to a son in the bathroom of her apartment early today, then threw the infant out the window to a roof 15 feet below, police reported. Police found the child after the mother had been taken to a hospital. He was put in an oxygen tent and later was reported doing well. Police said Ruth Piculich gave birth to the child at 4 a.m. She was found a short time later by her mother, Mrs. June Piculich, and sent to a hospital in an ambulance. At the hospital she announced she had thrown the baby out the window. Police said the young mother will be turned over to the Juvenile Aid bureau. Truffles, a gastronomical delicacy beloved of gourmets, is a species of mushroom, actually a fungi which grows underground. For Health, Eat California Fruit More Reds May Be Picked Up Soon Says FBI NEW YORK (UP)—The government's second big crackdown on American communist leaders widened today following the round of 17 members of the party's second team. More junior commissars are due for prosecution, authorities indicated. Out of 21 red leaders indicted herb yesterday, four still were sought today. A hundred FBI agents in 25 autos seized 16 here early yesterday, and a 17th was arrested in Pittsburgh. The roundup came 16 days after the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the convictions of eleven top communist leaders. A total of $191,000 bail, ranging from $1,000 to $20,000—was set late yesterday for the 16 arrested here. The Pittsburgh prisoner was held in $15,000 bail for removal to New York. Fifteen of those arrested here, including four women, remained in jail overnight. The 21 are charged with criminal conspiracy to teach and advocate overthrow of government by force and violence. The indictment was the first mass prosecution of communists since the June 4 Supreme Court ruling upholding constitutionality of the Smith Act, under which the eleven top red leaders were convicted in 1949. The 21 were indicted for allegedly taking part in the same conspiracy for which the eleven were convicted. U.S. Attorney Irving H. Saypol indicated here yesterday there would be further prosecutions. The special federal grand jury which indicted the 21 is continuing its work. In addition, the 21 were accused of plotting to take the party underground to carry out the conspiracy in case of "emergency." All Depart Pomona College Student Killed By 12,000 Volts AUBERRY, Calif (AP)—Malcolm L. Scott, 19, of Berkeley was electrocuted last night when he grasped a 12,000 volt power line while fighting a brush fire on a ranch southwest of here. Scott, a student at Pomona college, joined the United States forest service fire suppression crew here a week ago. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Scott of Berkeley. Chief Deputy Coroner Ben Paschall said the youth evidently seized the wire in the belief it was a branch of a dead tree which had fallen on the power line. In 1909 Chattanooga purchased the Southern Association franchise and all the players on the Little Rock roster for only $12,000. Seven professional baseball leagues will be opereating in North Carolina and six each in New York and Texas this season. Attempted Attack On Woman Fails A Marine Staff Sergeant's attack on Mrs. John Wheeler was prevented early this morning as she was parking her auto in the 100 block on Clementine st. She is the wife of local police man, John Wheeler. Mrs. Wheeler's assault fled the scene. Officers went to the El Toro Marine base in hopes of finding the Sergeant's car. It was not to be found. EXPLOSIVE IN HARBOR SAN PEDRO (AP) — Fishermen and other boatmen were warned away from explosive anchorage No. 3 in Los Angeles harbor today after a depth charge was dropped accidentally into the water from an unidentified ship. A Coast Guard Patrol boat was assigned to watch the area, one of several set aside for anchoring ships loaded with explosives. It was feared fishing equipment might set off the charge. The Coast Guard planned to send a diver down to retrieve the charge. The barn or screech owl catches and eats many mice. Government Mail Missing from Table K. L. Snyder, 218 E. Broadway, employee reported at 9:30 a.m., yesterday that a parcel mail truck had left a bundle of mail for a mail carrier, on a table top at 314 Indiana st., near the alley. After the mail truck left the bundle, someone apparently picked it up and fled. Police officers checked—the entire area, but found no clue to the missing bundle. HOME GOES "BOOM" BURBANK (AP) — Joe Alcorer's plans for a new five room house blew up last night. In fact, so did the house. The walls collapsed, the roof fell in, and the water heater tank landed two blocks away. The explosion, blamed by the fire department on a defective thermostat in the water heater, could be heard a mile off. Alcorer had just bought the place and was preparing to move in.
