In the Larry Weaver Joins Service One of the greatest all-around athletes ever to wear the Blue and Gold colors of the Anaheim High School left today to represent the local community in the United States Air Force. Larry Weaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Weaver of 225 E. Cypress st., has had a very colorful career in sports in the local community. Weaver, who graduated from Anaheim Union High in 1950 and spent one year at Fullerton Junior College leaves today for Lackland Field in Texas. He signed up for four years. He was an all-league choice at fullback for the Colonist eleven in 1949 and was a standout in baseball and track. He was a pitcher and fielder on the baseball squad while he broad jumped on the track team. He won the Sunset League championship in the broad jump and jumped his way into the CIF finals where he placed behind the record breaking leap of Verle Sorgen of Riverside now at USC. Weaver played right halfback on the Junior college team this past season and was one of the reasons Fullerton tied the loop champs in the final game of the year, Santa Ana by the score 18-18. Hollywood defeated Portland 4-3 in 16 innings at Glimore Field last night in what was the second longest game of the Coast League season. The longest game on tap was recorded April 16 when Seattle and San Francisco battled it out in 17 innings. Charlie Bishop allowed five hits and struck out eight to pitch Oakland to a 2-0 victory over San Diego. It was the Oaks fourth straight win, its longest streak this season. Seattle at San Francisco was not played due to the air line strike which grounded the flying Raniers. Highlights of the games were plentiful around the league. The Stars' Lou Stringer, who had saved the day in the ninth by smashing his fifth homer, started the triumphant surge with a double off the right-field fence. Chuck Stevens sacrificed him to third. George Schmee drew a pass, but Gorman lofted one to deep right field that Don White miraculously, but vainly caught. (AP)—Southern California's Trojans led the Pacific Coast Conference to its second straight track victory over the Big Ten last night, 77½ to 54½. Jack Davis, USC's fleet hurdler, set the pace, winning both the 120 high and 220 low hurdles in 14.1 and 23.4 and running on the winning shuttle hurdle relay team. He wound up with 11½ points, high man for the meet. Bob Mathias, the National and Olympic decathlon champion from Stanford, and Don Laz, the Illinois pole-vaulter, turned in the best individual performances. Laz set a meet record of 14 feet, 8 13-16 inches in the pole vault, after other competitors dropped out at 14 feet. Laz tried for 15 feet, but brushed the bar off. Mathias won the discus at a meet-record 173 feet, 4 inches. George Brown of UCLA, like Davis, was a double winner. Brown captured the broad jump with a leap of 23 feet, 11 inches and won the 220-yard dash in 22 seconds flat. An estimated 6500 spectators watched, the largest crowd ever to see a track meet in Oregon. No less than 12 Hayward Field records were broken. Louis knocked White Sox Battle Yankees to Draw; Hold 3½ Game Edge in Big Series NEW YORK (AP)—The battling Chicago White Sox showed the big town why they are leading the pack in the American League when they came surging back yesterday in the twilight of a long day to defeat their sternest rivals, the Yankees, 5-4 in the second game of their vital double-header after the Bombers had mailed them, 11-9, in the opener. Bob Dillinger, a pinch hitter, drove across the deciding run in the ninth inning of the tense second game with a line double to right after the veteran Ed Stewart had kept the Richards Rockets in the struggle with a three-run homer off Vic Raschi in the previous inning. A paid crowd of 60,441 packed the big stadium in the Bronx to get its first good view of the wonder team from the West, and after nearly seven hours of play it stood to yell its approval of a team which refused to be licked. The shadows were deep when Dillinger went up to hit for Pitcher Randy Gumpert in the ninth with two aboard and one out. The man he faced was Allie Reynolds, who had just relieved the sagging Raschi. The bespectacled third baseman banged a drooping liner to right which outfielder Cliff Mapes made a desperate try for. It hit Mapes' glove just above the grass, and rolled on through his legs as Jim Busby, speedy Chicago rookie, raced home with the decider. Howie Judson set the Yanks down in order in their and guaranteed that they will leave New York still the club to catch, no matter what the result of single games today and Thursday. In other league games, Eddie Joost and the ex-Hollywood Star, Gus Zernial slammed home runs to give the Philadelphia Athletics a 9-5 win over the Detroit Tigers' pitcher Dizzy Trout. Hoot Evers and Steffe Souchock hit home runs for the Tigers. Chuck Stobbs was touched-for only four hits as he pitched the Red Sox to a 9-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians. The Bostonians got off to a running start when Ted Williams pooled a two-run homer, his 14th of the season, in the first innning. Williams drove in four runs as the Boston victory delighted 31,644 fans.
