CONTEMPORARY DECORATION—Far from being a fad, modern art and decoration have become a definite part of modern life as this living room arrangement in the C. R. Young home illustrates. Structural glass is used extensively and rough textured fabrics, rare woods, metal and synthetic products are combined in the furnishings. Note unusual planter which is a part of the television cabinet. A close look in the mirror reveals a reflection of the dining area at the opposite end of the room. Gazette photos by Kreidt LEE'S GAL FRIDAY Garden Gossip FLOWERING POMEGRANATES! For several months this time of year the GARDEN is brightened with the large CHEERY BLOSSOMS of the FLOWERING POMEGRANATE. Everyone is familiar with the BRIGHT RED VARIETY, but the VARIEGATED and CREAMY WHITE are just as effective. The shiny, bright leaves make an attractive plant all summer long. Now that Junior's school days are over for this year, why not put him to work at dressing up your FLOWER BORDERS with PETUNIAS, BEGONIAS, or, if you prefer FLOWERS TO CUT—ASTERS, MARIGOLDS or ZINNIAS? PRIVACY PLUS—Enclosed on three sides by the house proper, and on the fourth by a separate garden house, the patio at the Young home is completely private. The dichondra lawn is bordered by a profusion of annuals and perennials, and rambler roses climb over the fence. A four-car garage can be seen in the background. Nurserymen say by Orange County Nurserymen's Association Pelargoniums (which includes the common garden geraniums, the Martha Washington, the scented leaf geraniums, and the ivy geraniums) are useful as potted plants either indoors or outdoors or for planting in the garden. The Martha Washington strains, with their beautiful colors and abundant flowers provide a very good substitute for Azaleas, which are difficult subjects here. Pelargoniums like a fairly heavy, well drained loam soil. In pots they should be planted in a mixture of good loam soil, coarse sand, and peat moss or leaf mold in equal parts. A small amount of well rotted manure is beneficial. One note of caution about potted plants is to use pots that are big enough for the size of the plant desired. FUCHSIAS are really BEAUTIFUL now—so it's a sharp idea to get your BASKETS made up in order to enjoy their full FLOWERING PERIOD. While I'm on the subject of FUCHSIAS, let me tell you if you haven't seen the beautifully foliaged AUTUMNAL FUCHSIA in a REDWOOD BASKET, you've seen nothing yet. Come in and take a look! Until next week Lee's Gal Friday LEE'S NURSERY 718 So. Los Angeles Ph. 3131 Anaheim Pelargoniums like a fairly heavy, well drained loam soil. In pots they should be planted in a mixture of good loam soil, coarse sand, and peat moss or leaf mold in equal parts. A small amount of well rotted manure is beneficial. One note of caution about potted plants is to use pots that are big enough for the size of the plant desired. Many people do not seem to realize that a plant must have plenty of root room, that a four- or five-inch pot is not big enough for a foot-high plant. Pelargoniums want considerable sun for good results and will not flower well in very shady locations. There is risk of frost damage if the temperature goes much below freezing. Pelargoniums are best set out in middle or late spring and most nurseries carry an assortment at that time. They should be set out at the same depth as they were in the pots and soaked well immediately after planting. Usually no shade is needed unless the weather is very hot. Although drought resistant, Pelargoniums respond to good irrigations. They should be given a good soaking, then left unill on the dry side before more water is applied. Being continuously very wet promotes stem rot. In hot weather irrigations should be more frequent. In the open ground Pelargoniums need little or no fertilizer. Too much causes rank growth and fewer flowers. If the soil or potting mixture is deficient, a moderate amount of any good mixed fertilizer may be applied, about one teaspoonful per four- or five-inch pot in the case of fertilizers having 6 per cent nitrogen. Pelargoniums suffer from very few pests or diseases in California. - GARDENS - BUILD IN THE MODERN MANNER—The C. R. Young home at 738 No. Palm is low and wide, and the front elevation faces Parkway. A symphony of color, the roof is of glistening white stone, the exterior walls are pale green stucco, and the wood trim is painted an unusual shade of terra cotta which matches exactly the blooms and foliage of the begonias growing in the flagstone planter boxes. Landscaping is gauged to the horizontal lines of the house. Modern Home of C. R. Either they like it or they don't. C. R. Young, prominent Anaheim home builder, likes it. He finds the modern shed roof dwelling with its large areas of glass, sweeping horizontal lines, and functional furnishings to be fundamentally the outgrowth of trends in modern day living. To demonstrate the interest and livability afforded by modern architecture, Young incorporated its best features in his family's new home at 736 No. Palm. Family Affair The Young home is a family affair in more ways than one. The two boys and their dad are in the contracting business. They all had a hand in the planning and the building of this house and all share it together. Mrs. C. R. Young provides the feminine touch. The 2300 square foot house is built in an elongated U-shape to follow the contour of the corner lot which actually faces Parkway instead of Palm, and encloses a lovely outdoor patio. The fourth side of the patio is shielded by a brick wall and a garden house which measures 112x160 feet. This attractive garden house has a cement floor and is constructed of cement brick in combination with open heavy beams and combed plywood. Inside, a grill, open fireplace and Mark Twain wrote a number of plays, most of them adapted from his own novels, either by himself or in collaboration with other writers. No one was an outstanding stage hit. None has been published. By JOAN S. WHITE tile sink comprise the cooking area and comfortable dining accommodations are provided by aluminum tubular tables and built-in settees, well padded with Kapok filled striped duck. Step Indoors Step in the front door of the Young home, and the extensive use of glass and the absence of partitions allow the eye to flow freely through the living-dining area and out into the colorful patio garden. A panel of translucent corrugated glass provides a decorative wall at the entrance foyer. To make this main room appear even larger, the feeling of spaciousness is further enhanced by a large mirror set into the wall above the fireplace from mantel to ceiling. This mirror picks up the warm greys and greens of the wall-to-wall carpeting and upholstery, and the clear reds of the lively figured pull drapes, the lamp shades, and accessories. The floral print of the paper on the opposite wall is also charmingly reflected in the mirror. More Glass The feeling of spaciousness rises over into the service rooftop where the stove is a center in separating the kitchen protruding from a pleasant breakfast noon. The floor to ceiling plate glass window in the breakfast noon makes the garden a part of decorative scheme. An interesting feature here is a recessed chic cabinet with sliding doors which glide noiselessly on an aluminum track. Indirect Lighting Throughout the house, the type of indirect lighting is used. Although the source of light is visible, in the bedrooms enough light is diffused by this means make reading comfortable in a part of the rooms. To make arrangement complete, 11g switches are noiseless. The windows in each of three bedrooms are set high on the wall to insure privacy and allow flexibility in furniture arrangement.
