A real contribution... One of the pleasant surprises at the Anaheim Union High school commencement in the beautiful setting of the Greek theater in the City park last night was the presentation of four scholarships to deserving high school graduates. Now, the presentation of scholarships is something which in itself is not too unusual. But the four scholarships offered last night mean much more to Anaheim than the presentation of money which will insure proper higher education for four Anaheim students. The annual gifts were made by Adolf Schoepe and Karl Reinhard. Mr. Schoepe is the president of Kwikset Locks and Mr. Reinhard is its vice-president. In the big audience at the exercises last night that not only were the students grateful for the recognition of their hard work and devotion to their school, but the audience of mothers and fathers and friends of the students were pleasantly gratified by the gesture of Mr. Schoepe and Mr. Reinhard. Four students, Marilyn Miller, Shelley Smith, Kenneth Mackay, and Russell Mackay received the scholarships last night. Originally, Mr. Schoepe and Mr. Reinhard had planned to award two scholarships. But it seemed to the donors that all these students had a good start to making a fine college showing and could find useful places in education (their chosen field). The annual gifts were made by Adolf Schoepe and Karl Reinhard. Mr. Schoepe is the president of Kwikset Locks and Mr. Reinhard is its vice-president. The motivating power behind the presentation is a sincere wish to be helpful to the city of Anaheim and her most valued possession—youth. It is one more manifestation of the good will of civic-minded business men and of an Anaheim industry which actually is devoted to the welfare of its employees, the best interests of its customers, and the advancement of Anaheim. It was obvious to one seated IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anabeim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago As Miss Anna Fischer and Dr. Yocum's little child were driving home from the depot last evening, the whiffle-tree broke, and the horses taking fright, ran away. Miss Fischer was thrown from the buggy, but fortunately escaped without serious injury. Dr. Yocum's child remained unhurt in the buggy. Near McDermott's blacksmith shop on Lemon st., the horse and buggy parted company, the horse making for home at good speed, leaving the buggy to get home as best it might. A runaway on Los Angeles st. yesterday was nearly attended with fatal consequences. The wagon on upset and Mrs. Cameron of Tustin City was thrown violently to the ground. Her injuries are of a serious nature. Drs. Burtnett & Mason, of Santa Ana, have just received a fresh lot of vaccine virus from Philadelphia. 50 Years Ago Clarence Smith was in from Orangethorpe a day or two ago. He states that Orangethorpe will have an elaborate float in the Fourth of July parade. Carl Zeus is coming to be one of the finest painters in town. He improved each shining hour on Saturday by applying a coat of asphaltum to Hahn's barn. Herman Dickel and C. A. Stukle drove over to Chino on Monday returning in the evening. They inspected the oilled roads, which they pronounce the best through-fares in Southern California. Mrs. H. Cahen departed yesterday for San Jose in response to the distressing intelligence that her father had been stricken with paralysis and was very low. H. A. Originally, Mr. Schoepe and Mr. Reinhard had planned to award two scholarships. But, it seemed to the donors that all these students had a good start to making a fine college showing and could find useful places in education (their chosen field). So two more awards were given. We repeat, in itself the presentation of scholarships is not unusual. But, of deeper significance to Anaheim, is the tremendous value to the city and our people of having men of good will among us who sincerely want to put out their effort and money to advance the causes all of us are interested in. Partly as a result of Colonel May has been and is being replaced by the WAFS, by Mary J Bennington College, Meanwhile, the ladies Force are really mad at staff. And they are let him forget it soon. At San Juan Capistrano, on Monday, during the recess of school, a son of Pablo Pryor was badly stabbed by a school mate. The knife entered the shoulder and inflicted quite an ugly gash. A ten-year-old boy fell to the ground from a second story window of the Oriental house in Los Angeles and strange to relate his injuries are but slight. We were told yesterday that quite recently fish are discharged from an artesian well a few miles from Anaheim. The fish are about one inch in length and are perfectly formed. Stoppenback is building a very fine house for himself on Lemon street. The brass band which was organized last week, is negotiating for the purchase of instruments. The locality where they intend to practice has not yet been decided upon. For some reason which we cannot explain, our citizens manifest some anxiety in regard to this matter. Fred Hartung has received an order from Washington territory for 1000 gallons of port wine. Mrs. H. Hoyt Vandenberg, himself a good-looking man and an efficient chief of the Air Force, has let himself be put in exactly that position with Air Force women. What General Vandenberg did was to bring aviatrix Jacqueline Cochran, wife of finance wizard Floyd Odium, into the Air Force as special adviser on the WAFS and later to accept her advice. Miss Cochran, after an investigation at Lackland Air Base, Texas, reported that the WAFS lacked glamor. She went further and even advised General Vandenberg that the WAFS were too short, too fat and too unattractive. The Air Force, she said, should pay more attention to shapely figures in recruiting women. Vandenberg agreed that the Navy seemed to be getting better looking females into the Waves, and that the WAFS could go in for taller women. The chief of the Air Force also suggested that the WAFS ought to be more feminine and stick to secretarial work instead of trying to be mechanics, truck drivers and grease monkeys. But when the general delicately passed these suggestions on to Col. Geraldine May, commander of the WAFS, she rebelled. She County Comment By GEORGE E. HART The cities are again waving the umbrella that they claim to be holding over the rural areas of Orange county. One of these days, somebody will come up with some facts and figures showing just who is holding the umbrella, and that would be a signal public service, because it should silence an argument that is crippling cooperative endeavor between agricultural and municipal interests for the benefit of both. Just now the umbrella outcry is raised against the proposed 10-cent special tax by the Orange County Flood Control district—which embraces city and rural territory—for the purchase of Colorado river water. A committee of water leaders chosen by both city and rural interests has asked the county supervisors to purchase 25,000 acre feet of Colorado river water for $250,000, on behalf of the flood control district. The committee did not specify how the money should be raised. The question is being explored in a state inquiry into student dope peddling in the schools here. The inquiry has put back on trial may favorite hero of our times—the teenager. The situation admittedly is shocking. The city school superintendent has said he would accept police estimates that 1500 high school students here are possible users of narcotics. But when the general delicately passed these suggestions on to Col. Geraldine May, commander of the WAFS, she rebelled. She argued that women were recruited for their merit, not their glamor; and that women should be used in noncombat jobs as well as men. Partly as a result of all this, Colonel May has been eased out and is being replaced as head of the WAFS, by Mary Jo Shelly of Bennington College, Vermont. Meanwhile, the ladies of the Air Force are really mad at their chief of staff. And they aren't going to let him forget it soon. "Everything for Loans" Stuart Symington, who inherited a lot of headaches as new head of the Reconstruction Finance corporation, is digging into another interesting situation involving Congressman Frank "Everything-is-made-for-love" Boykin of Alabama. The genial Congressman from Mobile, who gives regal dinners of bear meat, racoon and deer, seems to have had more than an inside drag with the sometimes overgenerous loan agency. Already, Symington has fired Boykin's cousin, Frank Prince, from the RFC, following disclosure that Prince had helped get a $700,000 loan for the Mobile Paper company in which Boykin and his children later secured a 40 percent interest. On top of this, Symington has discovered that Boykin helped secure a $450,000 loan for a lumber company to which he sells his timber. The company, Stutts Lumber Industries of Thomasville, Ala., had a $300,-000 overdraft at a local bank. So the potent Congressman from Alabama helped get a loan of $450,000 from the RFC for the lumber company, following which it paid off its draft, and had some left over to buy the Congressman's timber. Significantly, Boykin's cousin, Frank Prince, But several cities, including Santa Ana and Brea, filed independent protests with the supervisors against the special tax levy, which the supervisors have put forth as a plan, in the event they decide to make the purchase. These cities were willing to buy the water this year only, from flood control funds on hand, but opposed a special tax for that purpose. They raised the familiar objection — they would be holding the umbrella over the rural areas. The supervisors have these requests and protests under advisement. This column, without tongue in cheek but possibly with foot in mouth—a familiar posture to our reader, poor chap—herewith hazards the guess that the supervisors will NOT use funds on hand for the water purchase. They may or may not buy the water at all. But if they do, there will be a 10-cent tax levy. The $1,016,000 which the water committee sees in the flood control fund, with another $420,000 raised each year by the present 10-cent tax, made that committee feel that $250,000 could be used for buying water without interrupting the flood control program. But the supervisors point out that only about three-fourths of the fund is already committed, or $774,523, whereas there are flood control projects waiting which total up to about $6,500,000. When mention is made of a $250,000 water purchase, the supervisors think of the $250,000 (or more) project next in line, a three-pronged flood control job which directly benefit and protect the northwest residential area of the city of Orange. It is already in preliminary stage, with plans drawn for the northerly prong, a drainage works along Fletcher ave., near Olive, to divert storm waters into a big sand pit. The middle prong would be a drainage works along the S.P. tracks, leading to the river. To the south would be a third diversion works, keeping flood runoff None of the reported 1500 young victims is accused of inventing heroin or importing it. They got it from growup peddlers—former teenagers themselves presumably — and they were induced into addiction by these grownups. If the police had rounded up these grownups earlier, there wouldn't be the present problem among the young. Recently I wrote a defense of the teenager. It brought a lot of mail, pro and con. Today I'd like to present a defense of my defense of the teenager, still the best kid in history. Typical of these objecting to my contention that the teenager now is no worse than the past one is simply myopic or too young to remember the superior type of teenager of my day," he wrote. "The high school kid, when classes are dismissed for the day, immediately dashes to a tavern with his girl friend, an unheard of thing in my day." "This present generation of teenagers are the product of pleasure-loving parents of mediocre education who spend the greater part of their time outside of the home, people who have shirked their responsibilities. They have shown no interest in their children, but have permitted them to grow up like wild animals, ill-manured, uncouth and lacking judgment commensurate with their age." That may be true of some parents and some teenagers. But it isn't true of most parents and teenagers I meet. Most kids today are more honest, straightforward, and better-balanced than their parents were at the same age. They are less confused by life. Let's hear from its agent—seventeen-year-old Ruth Elminow Howell of Marysville, Wash.: sells his timber. The company, Stuts Lumber Industries of Thomasville, Ala., had a $300,- 000 overdraft at a local bank. So the potent Congressman from Alabama helped get a loan of $450,000 from the RFC for the lumber company, following which it paid off its draft, and had some left over to buy the Congressman's timber. Significantly, Boykin's cousin, Frank Prince, helped put this loan across too. Note—On Capitol Hill it's said that Boykin should change his "Everything-Is-Made-For-Love" motto to "Everything-Is-Made-For-Loans." Marshall vs MacArthur Real fact about Secretary of Defense Marshall's trip to Tokyo was that he wanted to be in Korea at this particular time—the rainy season—because he is interested in the morale of the men. The secrecy surrounding his trip was partly a test and had little to do with the enemy. Marshall has been miffed over the leak of important secrets from the Pentagon, and wanted to see whether plans for his trip would also leak. He made the plans more than three weeks ago, but told only two or three people. They didn't leak. It's significant that Marshall visited Tokyo almost immediately after General MacArthur left. It's no secret that the two men never got along well. Marshall having been a strong Pershing man and the young captain on Pershing's staff who worked out the strategy for the transfer of the American Expeditionary Force from St. Mikiel to the Meuse-Argonne front without the enemy knowing it. Military experts pronounced this an amazing job. While Marshall was an un-obstructive 36-year-old captain with Pershing, MacArthur was a spectacular 37-year-old brigadier general with the Rainbow Division. After the war, MacArthur kept in the limelight, first as commander of West Point, later as a brigadier general in the Philippines, then as Chief of Staff. Marshall meanwhile was only a colonel—despite the fact that he had Pershing's potent backing. However, Pershing and MacArthur weren't getting along well, and MacArthur, not Pershing, was on the upgrade in the Army. Both were rivals at one time for the hand of Louise Cromwell, daughter of J. P. Morgan partner, Edward T. Stotesbury. In the end, she turned down the widower Pershing, married the younger man—MacArthur. Meanwhile, with MacArthur in the saddle, Marshall remained a lowly colonel. It was not until 1938, after MacArthur had been transferred to the Philippines more or less permanently, that Roosevelt recognized Marshall's ability and promoted him to be chief of staff. That may be true of some parents and some teenagers. But it isn't true of most parents and teenagers I meet. Most kids today are more honest, straightforward, and better-balanced than their parents were at the same age. They are less confused by life. Let's hear from a teenager—seventeen-year-old Ruth Elinor Howell of Marysville, Wash.: "When I hear people bemoaning the state of today's youth," she wrote, "I always wonder if they have thought just who made us what we are. Who promotes all the things to tempt teenagers? Not us—it's the adults. "I for one have never known a day when our world was not in strife, either major or minor. We teenagers aren't allowed to 000, on the waiting list. So a $250,-000 slice out of available funds on band would just about wreck the program, say the supervisors. So far as the special tax for water is concerned, many water leaders feel that the basic water supply has been so seriously depleted that this is no time to block over who shall pay for refilling it. The job is too big for either city or rural areas to do it alone. When the water supply is restored to a safe plane, then will be time to arrange a fair way of paying for water, probably on a use basis, they hold. Meanwhile, they feel that the rural areas, which pay all the tax of the Orange County Water district, which has been buying Colorado river water the past two years, and also pay their share of the flood control tax, certainly are bearing an equitable share of any water purchased by the two districts." critiques the adults of today for their poor management. Yet we are expected to save the country from disaster by giving our lives in warfare. "If we had our way, there wouldn't be any warfare unless the adults did the fighting. It isn't fair for adults to start a war and expect youth to fight and win it. "So to the adults of today I say: don't criticize us—criticize yourselves. We're watching you closely and honestly trying to do our best. Can we help it if your examples for us are no better than they are?" The defense rests. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub.
