Frank Perer was the winner, and Norm Bradbury the loser. Perer gave up five hits to nine for Bradbury. Roger Pannler was the batting hero last night picking up three for four, for the Merchants while Bill Mitchell’s home run in the fifth inning tied up the ball game for Cypress VFW. Barbara Scofield of San Francisco and Gloria Butler, an American girl living on the French Riviera, displayed their entries for the 1951 “grass courts look” yesterday at the Keft Law Tennis tournament. Barbara flaunted a shirttail frock worn over skimpy white briefs. Gloria gave spectators a glimpse of her bare midriff with a two piece outfit consisting of bolero blouse caught in front with bow and sung fitting shorts. Gorgeous Gussy Moran defaulted as Wimbledon's fashion queen by turning pro after successive triumphs in 1949, and her apple pie scalloped outfit last year. FREE LANCE JOOKEY INGLEWOOD (AP)—Willie Shoemaker, Hollywood Park's leading jockey, is a free lance rider today. He bought up for $7500 his contract with Mrs. Thelma Snced. It ran until Sept. 1. They had differences that resulted in her signing other riders for some of her horses. The formality of dissolving the contract was reached in Superior court in Los Angeles yesterday but Judge A. A. Scott recommended Shoemaker sign a contract with a larger stable. The 20-year-old Shoemaker tied for the national riding championship last year with Joe Culmone. They had 388 winners each. Penn is Bad Boy for OK On Television SPOKANE, Wash., (AP) — The tarnish acquired by the University of Pennsylvania in the eyes of the National Collegiate Athletic association will not rub off on opponents, Dr. Hugh C. Willett said today. Dr. Willett, president of the NCAA, indicated the NCAA expects its members to cancel games if possible but not to risk suit if held to the letter of signed contracts. Playing a school in the "bad standing" category would not place a member automatically under the same heading. The NCAA has placed Penn in bad standing for rejecting the no-television policy. Dr. Willett, unable to make telephone contact with the association attorney, put off until today his answer to Penn's suggestion the attorney general rule on whether television can be barred under the Sherman Anti Trust act and NCAA's own constitution. The association previously reported its ban was reviewed by the Justice Departments Anti Trust division. Representing Southern California, Dr. Willett is attending the Pacific Coast conference meeting which got away to a slow start yesterday. Nothing seeped past conference doors on television but the PCC announced renewing its contract for radio broadcasting of football and basketball games in 1951-52 with Associated Tidewater Oil company. The price was not disclosed. Chisox and Dodgers Swing Into Foreign Territory Nursing Ills (By The Associated Press) The Chicago White Sox and Brooklyn Dodgers, leaders in their respective major league races, begin another swing through foreign territory tonight nursing various minor aches and pains. They hope no serious complications develop. Manager Paul Richards parades his White Sox, their American League lead trimmed to two and a half games by the New York Yankees, into Washington for a night game against the Senators. Brooklyn, sporting a five and one-half game, National League edge, opens its second western tour of the season against the Cardinals tonight in St. Louis. Catcher Gus Niarhos and right-fielder Ace Zarilla of the pennant-hungry White Sox are suffering from groin injuries. Pitcher Howie Judson's shoulder is paining, and outfielder Ed Stewart has been running a fever. In addition, Pitcher Harry Dorish has been called home to Swoyerville, Pa., because of the death of an infant daughter. Chisox to Capitol Nevertheless, Chicago hopes to latten its win column at Washington. The Chisox have belted the Senators seven times this year, losing only one game. Lou Kretlow, who stopped Washington with four hits last week, is Richards' pitching choice in the opener of the three-game series. Connie Marrero goes for the Senators. The White Sox have four games in Philadelphia before moving to won three of four from Chicago to barely get out of the west with a 6-5 edge, are home for 13 games. Manager Casey Stengel's world champions have three games with the St. Louis Browns starting today. Stengel will send Vic Raschi (9-3) against Duane Pillette of the Browns, who climbed from the cellar by taking six of 11 games on their last home stand. At Boston, the Red Sox hope to get back on the winning track in a three-game series with Detroit. The Red Sox have 17 home games before they take the road again, and will depend upon Chuck Stobbs in the opener with the Tigers. Detroit has nominated Ted Gray. Cleveland moves into Philadelphia for three arclight games, with Bobby Feller on the firing line seeking his ninth victory against a single defeat. The Athletics will pitch Alex Kellner. All clubs were idle yesterday. Joe Gordon and Solons Play at LA (By The Associated Press) Thirteen solid base hits gave Joe Gordon's hustling Sacramento ball club another victory and added a half game to its grip on first place in the Pacific Coast League. The Sacs administered a 4 to 1 defeat to San Diego last night in Torrid Hitting Race Developing In National NEW YORK (AP)—Stan Musial is getting close to Jackie Robinson in another sizzling National League batting race—only four points behind. Musial won in 1943, 1946, 1948 and 1950. Robinson slumped during Brooklyn's home stand from .403 to .370 as he had only three hits in 22 trips for the last six games. Red Schoondienst, Cardinal second baseman, bounced up 20 points to move from ninth to third at .350. Roy Campanella moved from tenth to fourth on a 16-point advance to .343. Richie Ashburn of the 1950 champion Phillies is batting fifth at .341. Bob Elliott of Boston sixth at .339 just a step ahead of Pittsburgh's Ralph Kiner at .337. Dick Sisler of the Phils is eighth at .326. Frank Baumholtz of Chicago next at .325. Al Dark of New York and Pee Wee Reese of Brooklyn are tied for tenth at .322. Question is: Did Maxim Get Mickey? CHICAGO (AP)—Whether Joey Maxim was drugged the night he was mauled by heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles still puzzles the Illinois Athletic commission. The commission heard from Maxim's manager, Jack Kearns, and its head medical examiner, Dr. J., M. Houston, yesterday, and then ordered Maxim to appear before the commission June 25. Nevertheless, Chicago hopes to laten its win column at Washington. The Chisox have belted the Senators seven times this year, losing only one game. Lou Kretlow, who stopped Washington with four hits last week, is Richards' pitching choice in the opener of the three-game series. Connie Marrero goes for the Senators. The White Sox have four games in Philadelphia before moving to New York and Boston for a couple of tough series which should show which way the pennant wind is blowing. Manager Chuck Dressen of the Dodgers will shoot Preacher Roe and his eight-win-and-no-loss record at the Cards. This is the first of 13 games the Bums play in the west, and Dressen hopes 13 is a lucky number. Big Don Newcombe has a sore shoulder and will miss one and maybe two pitching turns, thus upsetting the Brooklyn hurling rotation. The weather has been cold and damp in Flatbush, and Dressen hopes some hot days will help Newcombe's flipper. Gerald Staley (7-5) is nominated to oppose Roe. Brooklyn won six and lost three on its last western trip, and if anyone is going to stop the Dodger flag rush they had better start the stopping. During the home stand, just ended, Dressen's club took the west seven to three. The Cardinals were dumped three straight at Ebbets Field. Reds Into Second The Cincinnati Reds, who coped seven of nine games in the east and moved into second place, entertain the New York Giants under the lights. Howie Fox is slated for mound duty for the Redlegs, opposed by either Dave Koslo or Montla Kennedy of New York. The Chicago Cubs, who skidded from third to sixth place in the east when they dropped seven of 10 games, open at home against the champion Philadelphia Phillies. Ken Heintzelman is to oppose Frank Hiller of the Cubs. Boston's Braves, after losing seven of 11 games at home, move into Pittsburgh to oppose the cellar-dwelling Pirates. Cliff Chambers will tangle with the Braves' Johnny Sain in the opener. Joe Gordon and Solons Play at LA (By The Associated Press) Thirteen solid base hits gave Joe Gordon's hustling Sacramento ball club another victory and added a half game to its grip on first place in the Pacific Coast League. The Sacs administered a 4 to 1 defeat to San Diego last night in the only game played. It was the eighth game of their series and Sacramento won six of them, to take a two-game lead over Seattle. Aging Al Benton granted only six hits, fanned nine Padres, and the only run off him was fashioned by Jim Tabor, an ex-Sac, who lined his sixth homer. Manager Joe Gordon sat out last night's affair. He fell during Sunday's doubleheader and was shaken up. Although his injuries are not serious he decided to rest until the series at Los Angeles opening tonight. Last night's Sacramento crowd was 3117, which sent the season total at the state capital to 178, 164, or 26,675 more than at this time last year. Kearns told the hearing Maxim "acted as if he were doped." Houston denied ever telling a reporter it was possible Maxim's food could have been doctored before the fight. "The man was not doped," Houston said. "He was just exhausted and was treated as such." Two mountain ranges divide Ecuador into three distinct areas.
