Local B-PW Club Hears Report on Annual Convention Held in Coronado
"Faith in Our Cause, In ourselves, And in others," was the theme of the thirty-first annual state convention of California Federation of Business and Professional Women's clubs.
Reporting on the event, Jean Theuson, said that Mildred L. Lillie of Los Angeles Superior Court, state civil defense chairman, said in her speech Friday, "Our worst enemy is apathy. For the first time the American public has to consider the possibility of mass destruction of our cities by a hostile nation. Appropriations for civil defense are being cut back and personnel reduced," she said, "civil defense is not a matter that can be taken care of in a few days, a permanent defense program is the only adequate one."
A special Mexican luncheon was served Saturday with Senora Susana de Limon, president of Tijuana BPWC, in charge.
Miss Helen G. Irwin, national first vice-president, of Des Moines, Iowa, spoke on the privileges enjoyed by BPW members adding, "Too often we are prone to view activities of the United Nations and in foreign countries remotely. When we say peoples of the world we say it as though we were standing by and fail to realize that what affects them, also affects us."
Climax of the convention was installation of officers Saturday night with Dr. Dorothy Patterson of Sacramento seated as presiding officer.

Horace Mann Cub Pack Plans Picnic
Horace Mann school district Cub Pack 102, sponsored by the Anaheim Elks club will have its annual picnic Sunday, May 27, at 1 p.m., at the O'Niel park, in the Hills of South East Orange county.
This picnic, the "biggest" in all respects, has been in the making for about six weeks by the Pack committee, which includes the Den Mothers. Several evenings have been taken up by planning commission. A good time has been planned for all attending. Games, food, "pop" as well as a good deal of orange juices will be served. One of the big highlights will be a ball game between the dads and the Cubs. It has been rumored that the dads have arranged for some "stringers" in order not to be on the short end of the score.
As was expected, most of the planning was done by the Den Mothers, consisting of Mrs. Vernon Starr, Mrs. William Martins, Mrs. Paul Havens, Mrs. E. F. Vandenberg, Mrs. Roy H. Kliiss and Mrs. Brandon. The following committee also aided in the planning of the picnic, William Martin, Cubmaster; Vernon Starr, Ted Kirkhart, Al Raymond, Carl Robertson and Andrew Ference.
