Everything Happened in Majors Yesterday; Leonard Wins Two
By The Associated Press
Whew! That was a spectacular sabbatical streep major league baseball staged yesterday.
Double figure scores, lopsided shutouts, overflowing crowds, streak hitting, streak hurling, a homer-hitting, pitcher, another who won two games in one day. Nearly everything happened on this traditional day of rest. Whew!
Here is what happened in a nutshell:
1. The Philadelphia Phillies sank the Pirates in a double-decker, 17-0 and 12-4 as the season's home record crowd of 36,166 Pittsburgh patrons moaned and groaned. The Phils' Richie Ashburn collected eight hits in the doubleheader.
2. Brooklyn routed the reds in both ends of a doubleheader, 10-3 and 14-4 before 29,427 suffering Cincinnati fans.
3. The Cardinals rallied for five runs after the first two batters were retired in the seventh inning to come from behind and nip the New York Giants, 8-7, before 22,666 screaming St. Louisians.
4. Dick Fowler won his first game in almost a year, extending Cleveland's losing streak to six.

Rose Bowl Pact Up For Renewal Poses Problems
CHICAGO UP—Renewal of the Rose Bowl pact with the Pacific Coast conference comes up for a deciding vote this week by the Big Ten.
Wisconsin, Purdue, Minnesota and Northwestern are expected to vote against renewal when the Big Ten faculty representatives and athletic directors hold the first joint session Thursday in a three-day conclave.
Illinois, Michigan, Iowa State, Michigan State and Indiana are expected to favor extending the Rose Bowl agreement another three years. However, there will be considerable lobbying to get six schools lined up.
Illinois is expected to vote against renewal unless the contract provides that the same team can go to Pasadena only once in every three years instead of once in every two. Michigan is expected to go along with this.
Under the circumstances, the Rose Bowl renewal probably will carry 6 to 4 (only a majority is needed—a deadlock would kill it) on a 1-in-3 basis. There is strong speculation the Pacific Coast will reject the 1-in-3 and in so doing will reject the pact altogether.
LEGAL NOTICES
2. Brooklyn routed the reds in both ends of a doubleheader, 10-3 and 14-4 before 29,427 suffering Cincinnati fans.
3. The Cardinals rallied for five runs after the first two batters were retired in the seventh inning to come from behind and nip the New York Giants, 8-7, before 666 screaming St. Louisians.
4. Dick Fowler won his first game in almost a year, extending Cleveland's losing streak to six with a 2-1 triumph for Philadelphia. The Indians, however, won the second game of the twin bill, 5-3.
5. 41-year-old Emil (Dutch) Leonard was credited with both wins as the Cubs came from behind to whip Boston's Braves twice, 4-3 and 5-4 to the delight of 42,088 cheering Chicagoans.
6. Undefeated Ed Lopat pitched his seventh consecutive victory for the Yankees with a 7-3 triumph over the St. Louis Browns before 29,427 chilled and dampened New Yorkers. He also hammered his third home run of the season. Rain forced the postponement of the scheduled second game.
7. Hal Newhouse became the third visiting southpaw to go the route and win in Fenway Park as Detroit defeated the Red Sox 8-4 before 30,320 blue Bostonians.
8. Chicago's surprising White Sox made it four in a row on their traditional tough eastern swing, shading the Senators, 5-4 to the dismay of 11,773 Washington well-wishers.
When the smoke cleared and all the 137 runs were in Brooklyn had strengthened its first place hold in the National league to one game. Chicago had moved into second and Boston had dropped from second to fourth. The Phillies climbed out of the cellar into fifth place and Cincinnati slipped into the yawning basement.
No change took place in the American league race as the Yankees retained their two-game lead over the White Sox with the Tigers another half length in the rear.
The Philis slugged seven Pittsburgh pitchers for 35 hits, 20 in the first game. Russ Meyer hurled the shutout. Their 17-0 victory ranked seventh among the major's most lopsided shutouts.

too late. He forced Wetzel to fly out to Peterson, but was then nicked for a double by Crain to score Nettles and Lane with the winning runs.
George Labono, Tar left-handed pitcher began to weaken in the fourth and was finally removed in the sixth for Bill Burdick. Lobono, in the fourth, walked two in a row, Herrera and Peterson, and started the fifth frame with a gratis pass to first. That ended his work as Bill Burdick took off his catcher's equipment and took over the mound duties.

Fourth place, Lidyoff of Montebello, jumped 20 foot 11 inches; while Rule of Long Beach Poly won at 21 feet 3½ inches. Schmidt's leap of the last week (21 feet 1¼ inches) would have given him a tie for third in the finals.
The other Anaheim entry Arron Peralta finished a slow seventh in the Class Bee 220 yard dash behind the 223, clocking of winner Coyle of Redondo Beach.
Bob Suess of Huntington Beach became the first prep runner in California to run the 880 yards under two minutes this year as he rambled the two laps in 1:59.8. Adolph Maya of Garden Grove placed third in the mila behind winner Ledesma of Compton. Wihning time—4:34.1.
