More and more this technologically world of ours is becoming dependent on electricity to do the work that otherwise would have to be done by good old hand and elbow power.
Where other forms of energy, such as steam or internal combustion pressures, are used, electricity still performs an important function as the nerve impulse which is necessary to their operation.
If electricity is the nervous impulse and, in many cases, the power on which modern industry operates, then electrical wire is the nerve cord which carries, contains and guides the power.
One Anaheim industry is concerned solely with providing wire of many types for use wherever electrical energy is put to work. Essex Wire Corp. of California has grown from a very small start in 1942 into one of the larger, more important industries of which Anaheim is so proud.
Operations began with the production of only bare wire and enameled wire for use in electric magnets. Magnet wire was then, and is now, a specialty of the Anaheim plant, which turns out enameled copper wire ranging in size from that of pencil lead to half the diameter of a human hair.
With the passing years, the plant grew and took on the manufacture of other types of wire now they include all types of building wire, moisture wire, transformed weather-proofed wire for supply lines and armored cable machine.
The Anaheim Essex is one of two in the California vision of Essex Wire Corp. is primarily a Midwest addition. J. W. Stewart, vice president of the California Division in charge of West Coast manufacturing for the company He resides in Pasadena.

Parents Must Guide Children In Responsibility
SAN DIEGO (P)—Experts can chart the course for proper human development but the arts and skills of guiding an actual child into patterns of social responsibilities lies within the parents, a family relations authority declared here.
Dr. Evelyn Millis Duvall of Chicago, executive secretary of the National Council on Family Relations, told the annual convention of California Congress of Parents and Teachers that "positive health, nutrition and preventive psychiatry all lie within the living laboratory of the home today."

Future of other types of wire until now they include all types and sizes of building wire, motor armature wire, transformer wire, weather-proofed wire for power supply lines and armored cable.
Facilities for the manufacture of heavy building wire have been outgrown so a 9,000 foot square addition is being made to the building to house additional facilities of that type and also the armored cable machine.
The Anaheim Essex plant is one of two in the California Division of Essex Wire Corp., which is primarily a Midwest organization. J. W. Stewart, vice-president of the California Division, is in charge of West Coast sales and manufacturing for the company. He resides in Pasadena.
Plant manager for both the Anaheim plant and the other one on San Diego is M. J. Simon of Coronado. W. A. Mansfield, superintendent of the Anaheim factory, is a local man as are most of the other 150 employees. Anaheim Truck and Transfer Co. handles transportation for the plant.
Ultimate goal of the two California Essex plants is the complete satisfaction of West Coast wire needs, thus eliminating the long delays which go with importing wire from the Eastern division, according to Simon. He said the California Division anticipates keeping pace with West Coast needs and growth.
Being a local industry means more to Essex than just the fact that the factory site happens to be here, Simon said. All office supplies, mechanical equipment and services are purchased locally to the limit of the community's ability to supply them, he explained.
The Essex plant was first built to house the Anaheim Sugar Co.'s sugar beet processing equipment. Later it was acquired and operated by Holly Sugar Co.

Develops Remote Control Steering
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP)—A new device will enable seamen to steer a ship by remote control from practically any strategic spot on board, the General Electric company says.
The "electric helmsman" can be plugged into the steering control system at special outlets throughout the ship.
The device is strapped to the user's chest and is controlled by a small knob.
GE said the unit could be used in combat operations when normal steering stations had been disabled.
It also can be used for "close in" direction of such maneuvers as docking, breeches buoy transfers and other normal or emergency movements.
The device, developed by engineers of the GE Aeronautic and Ordnance Stations divisions, is being fitted on a Navy destroyer. An earlier model has been tested on a similar vessel during the last two years.
MARCH FACTORY HIRING UP
WASHINGTON (AP)—The number of persons quitting factory jobs rose noticeably between February and March, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.
On the other hand, the hiring of factory employees in March kept pace with the high rate of recent months.
Workers were added to factory payrolls at the rate of 47 per 1000 employees in March, the bureau said, and people quit their jobs at the rate of 26 per 1000 employees, compared with 21 per 1000 in February.

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA
SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS have seen an amazing change in Anaheim.
If you haven't already seen it, turn to the 1876 picture on the other side of this page. Compare it with the picture above which shows a portion of Center St. as it looks on almost any quiet day early in the afternoon. The above photo was taken from the intersection of Los Angeles St. and Lemon St., and looks east. Now-a-days, the Gazette has found, when you picture a scene in Anaheim you must look at it quickly—tomorrow the face of Anaheim will be altered by the same march of progress which has carried the city forward since the time the 1876 picture was made.
