Record Field Enters Kentüky Derby Tomorrow; Eddie Arcaro and Battle Morn May Be Favored
LOUISVILLE (P) — A record field of 23 horses was entered today for the Kentucky Derby tomorrow, promising one of the greatest racing scrambles in the nation's most famous horse race.
If all go, the 77th running of the Derby would be the richest with a pot of $129,100 and $101,050 to the winner.
The large field was assured when no standout horse developed during the winter racing in the South and West, or later when the Northern tracks opened.
People even were betting this warm day which horse would be the favorite, and it seemed the combination of the Cain Hoy stable's Battle Morn, with Jockey Eddie Arcaro, might get the nod over the C. V. Whitney entry of Naimeluke and Counterpoint.
Battle Morn was listed in the early line at 4 to 1, with the Whitney pair at 5 to 1. This was a late switch, which reversed the odds prevailing yesterday.
The parade of trainers and aides into the racing secretary's office began at 7 a.m. (EST) and continued until the entry box closed three hours later.
It is probable at least 22 horses will be at the starting gate tomorrow at 4:30 p.m., since the Brown Hotel stable of J. Graham Brown has said only one of its two horses will start. Trainer Joe Puckett entered Snuzzle and The Gink, but said Snuzzle would go on a fast track, and the Gink if the track is off.
Royal Mustang and Golden Birch, a couple of horses owned by Sam E. Wilson, Jr., from Corpus Christi, Texas, were the first to be entered today for the Derby.
Trainer Joe Hansen entered Royal Mustang as the secretary's office opened, and said the colt would win. His agent, Milton Kite, entered Golden Birch, an Irish-bred horse.
Count Turf, owned by Jack Amiel of New York, was entered a moment later by George "Slim" Sulley, assistant trainer.
Repetoire, unbeaten in four races this year, was fourth to come into the mile and one quarter classic. His name was put in by Stanley Mikell, husband of the owner, Mrs. Nora Mikell of Dover, Del.
"He's the one they've got to beat," said Mikell of the colt which beat the best in the East in the Chesapeake Stakes and Wood Memorial.
Agent Whitey Price signed the entry papers for the King Ranch's Sonic, winner of the Experimental Handicap No. 2 at Jamaica.
"He looks great, and I think he'll win by himself," said Price. Last year the King Ranch won the Derby with Middle ground.
Trainer Jimmy Jordan entered the sixth horse, W. C. Martin's Phil D., winner of the San Felipe stakes in California.

The ninth horse in was Battle Morn, from the Cain Hoy stable of Harry F. Guggenheim. OLD AGE RECIPIENTS
Old age recipients in California in March 1951 numbered 273,728 of which 5753 appeared on Orange county's public assistance rolls. There is apparently a temporary leveling at this point, reported the California State Chamber of Commerce from its continuous study of governmental expenditures.
Census figures recently reported on persons 65 years of age and over reveal that 30.5 per cent of that age group receive old age assistance in California as compared with 21.8 per cent in the other states and the District of Columbia. The California percentage is 40 per cent higher.

Big Jim Konstanty Faltering to The Choruses of 'I Told You So'
By The Associated Press
Big Jim Konstanty is running behind his 1950 schedule and the "I told you so" choir is tuning up.
They said around the training camps that Konstanty, the Phils relief ace, couldn't possibly repeat last year's success. So far they're right. Because he failed last night, the St. Louis Cards ride in first place today.
Konstanty didn't lose a game until May 30 last season. Already he has lost two and won none. This time last year he had 1-0.
But it's much too early to judge. Failure of Eddie Sawyer's pitchers, with the exception of Robin Roberts, has thrust a heavier burden on Konstanty. It seems impossible, but he's working more often than last year when he made 74 appearances.
Last night was his eighth job in 16 Phil games. The only time he rests is when Roberts starts.
Earlier, the Braves took liberties with Jim's stuff like the Dodgers did opening day. Then came the eighth inning of last night's game with St. Louis.
Four hits, a walk and an error by Del Ennis accounted for three runs and brought in Milo Candini to relieve the reliefer. A fourth run crossed before the side was out. The final count was 8-4 St. Louis.
But Konstanty's troubles are only a part of the Phils' woes. Catcher Andy Seminick was hit behind the left ear by Max Lanier's pitch in the fourth inning. Carried from the field and taken to a hospital, Seminick soon regained consciousness. X-ray will determine how long he'll be out.
It seems Branch Rickey has more than a lefthand catcher at Pittsburgh. His Pirates continued their sweep through east by ruining the New York Giants three-game win streak, 7-4. After Spider Jorgensen's pinch homer tied the Herm Wehmeler, who beat them four times last year. With Preacher Roe throwing a six-hitter, the Dodgers shut out the Cincinnati Reds, 8-0.
Andy Pafko's homer with the bases loaded paced Chicago's 9-3 win over the Boston Braves. That opened the door for St. Louis to slip past Boston into first place. Sam Jethroe with a homer and single drove in all three Boston runs off rookie Bob Schultz.
But the big explosion of the day was in St. Louis where the New Yotk Yankees scored 11 in the ninth inning to flatten the Brownies, 17-3. The 11 runs were a new league record for a ninth inning and the 24 total bases in the inning tied a record.
Gil McDougal hit a grand slam homer and a two-run triple in the ninth inning, tying a modern major league record with six runs batted in for one inning.
Allie Reynolds had little trouble going the route in his first start.
Chuck Stobbs got Boston Red Sox their first win of the western swing with the help of Walt Dropo. Dropo came off the bench and he responded with a double and single to knock in four runs of the 6-1 edge over Detroit's Ted Gray.
Washington continued to mop up the west, whacking Chicago, 7-1, to take over the undisputed lead from idle Cleveland. The Indians and Philadelphia A's were not scheduled. Connie Marrero scattered nine hits for his third straight win. In three games he has given up a total of three runs.

There will be five hundred sprinters who all have times; three broad jumpers from San Diego who leaped over 22 feet and putters with marks all feet. One is Charles Powder of the Year in foot past season.

Lindell Pulling Quite a Comeback As Pitcher-Outfielder for Stars
At age 34, big John Lindell is enjoying quite a comeback as a pitcher.
The ex-New York Yankee outfielder, now working between the garden and the mound for the Hollywood Stars, pitched a superlative 1-0 victory over the hard-hitting Oakland club last night. Big John's knuckler stopped the Oaks with three hits.
But it took a lucky break and George Schmeeck's daring steal of home in the eighth inning to give Lindell the win. Oak Earl Harriet, every bit as sharp on the hill, allowed only four hits and fanned nine men to Lidell's four.
But Harrist lost his own game when, after Schmeeck walked, his wild throw gave Herb Gorman a life and let the Star runners get around to third and second. A double steal on the very next pitch decided the game.
Lindell ran his string of consecutive scoreless innings to 15 and his earned run average down to 1.13, believed to be the lowest in the league, not bad for a man who hasn't pitched regularly since 1942.
Portland's leading Beavers had a half-game shaved off their lead as Seattle took a 4-2 decision behind Jim Davis. That left the Beavers four full games ahead of second-place Los Angeles. The Angels were rained out again at San Francisco, as was San Diego at Sacramento.
Davis scattered 10 Portland hits to best Lyman Linde. A couple of errors by Eddie Basinski gave Seattle two unearned runs—the margin of victory. Jim Rivers drove in two runs for the winners with a triple and single.
Sunset Track Stars to Meet Other Leagues
Tomorrow afternoon at Huntington Beach High school the Sunset league's tracksters resume action against three other leagues—Orange, San Diego and Metropolitan in the CIF track and field quarter-finals.
Having no competition since the league finals at Newport Harbor April 21, the Sunseters will have a tough row to hoe to keep pace with the "loaded" teams from the southern section of the state.
San Diego High, the team that finished second to Glendale in the CIF finals and fourth in the state meet last year has almost the same team back and should be installed as favorites in tomorrow's meet. Athletes placing 1, 2 or 3 in their league finals qualified for this CIF quarterfinal meet.
Larry Kirchman, Colonist quarter-miler, will have some fast competition from Joe Epps of La Jolla and possibly Harold Espy of San Diego. Epps, who also runs the high hurdles (15.0s.) has rambled the 440 yard dash in 52.0s. Kirchman broke the league record in the time 50.9s, but has a better mark of 50.4s.
Espy is a 10.0s. 100 yard dash man and may forego the quarter. He is the same runner that was nipped at the finish of the CIF finals last year by Oranges' Clyde Wilson. Last season Espy had a

Armed Forces for Release Reserves
WASHINGTON (UP)—The Armed Services will begin releasing Enlisted Reservists "as soon as practicable," the Defense Department said yesterday.
Its announced plans call for the Air Force to start the program almost immediately with the Marine Corps following in June, the Navy in July, and the Army by next September.
Priority-will be given to World War II veterans.
The entire program is subject to change should the international situation be altered substantially, the department said.
The Air Force said its enlisted personnel ordered to extended duty from the volunteer reserve may get out after 12 months of active duty. But officers ordered to duty since the Korean outbreak in June, 1950, may be required to serve 21 months.
