Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... The ways of the Lord are right, and the just shall walk in them—Hos. 14:9. CALIFORNIANA—The fifth and worst fire in San Francisco's history up to May 8, 1851, burned all of the business district between Pine and Pacific sts. from Kearney to the Battery. Twenty-two blocks, about 1800 buildings valued at $12 million were razed. ERRATA—The draft people did it again! They caught up with Buddy Joe Shackelford, 20-year-old soldier, who re-enlisted after having served a 28-month hitch with the army of occupation in Japan ... Buddy Joe has been kinda busy in Korea, so naturally when his draft questionnaire caught up with him, he neglected it. He had other more important duties to take care of ... In due time the draft people sent him a notice which stated that he would be declared delinquent if he failed to register with the local board ... That was the last straw! When the cannonade quieted down, the soldier wrote a letter to M. Groom, clerk, Local Board 133. He stated frankly that he had no desire to become delinquent under Section 602.4 of the Selective Service Regulations. He moved articles of duties to take care of... In due time the draft people sent him a notice which stated that he would be declared delinquent if he failed to register with the local board... That was the last straw! When the cannonade quieted down, the soldier wrote a letter to M. Groom, clerk, Local Board 132. He stated frankly that he had no desire to become delinquent under Section 602.4 of the Selective Service Regulations. He quoted Articles of War 28 and 61 and added: "I have taken this up with the proper authorities and they do not feel that I can be given leave to return to California (not that I do not wish to!) and register with your board; so if I take it upon myself to return anyway, I may be deemed a deserter or even called AWOL. Punishment for doing these things are severe... So if there is any way you can help me return I would be most grateful. Otherwise, I think you will have to declare me delinquent and process my case accordingly... I may add, if it will be of any help to you, that I talked to one of your clerks when I came into the Army and she should have my records." GRAPEVINE — There will be more interest in the coming school board election as a result of the Mel Gauer incident. Joe Thompson, Mrs. John Wilson, H. R. Fox, Clyde Cromer, Warren Ashleigh, John Bovee and Mrs. Arthur Roquet are to be commended for their efforts in working for the betterment of Anaheim schools... Although Fredrick Welseman and Irving Goldfeder may like to keep it a secret, the fact is that Hunt Foods, Inc., processed more spinach this year than ever before... Eddie McGunegill will tell you that Daystrom Furniture is really expanding its business. Not only is the subsidiary of the American Type Founders building a $500,000 plant in Anaheim, but they're getting ready to manufacture wood furniture in Pasadena... PREDICTION—Larry Kirchman will score Anaheim's points in the Annual CIF track-and-field meet at Huntington Beach Saturday. He turns the quarter in 50.4 seconds. That's stepping along with PREDICTION—Larry Kirchman will score Anaheim's points in the Annual CIF track-and-field meet at Huntington Beach Saturday. He turns the quarter in 50.4 seconds. That's stepping along with the best. PEOPLE—Bernard Jordan was one of the Independent Bankers' forum speakers ... Robert Tice, 16-year-old Optimist oratorical contest winner, will represent 16 clubs at next month's district contest in Santa Monica. "The Challenge to Youth," is the youth's challenging subject ... Neil Stanley will trot out his best bib and tucker in July when his son, John Neil Stanley, center aisles with Patricia Swanner ... See where the Young Republicans are going to hold a shindig at the swank Newport Harbor Yacht club. Brent Wahlberg is promoting the elaborate event. Wonder what the GOP youngsters got to make merrie about? Could it be little ol' Harry? Hmm-mm-m? CONGRATULATIONS — Josephine Fulfer is one of Anaheim's outstanding business women, hSe's well qualified to guide the destinies of the Business and Professional Women. She follows another able leader: Mrs. Marguerite Coons. NITECAPSULE—A classic is a novel everyone talks about but hasn't time to read.
