Grand Jury Probes LA City Schools LOS ANGELES (UP)—The county grand jury today opened a probe of the Los Angeles city schools system, long under fire. Grand Jury foreman Nathaniel Pitts said the jury is particularly interested in school board contracts and insurance. Mrs. Lone Swan, elementary principal since discharged, alleged that state laws were being violated in the handling of school insurance matters. But Board Charman Bayard Becker, an insurance man by trade, responded that he had been advised by the county counsel's office that he acted in a legal manner in handling insurance business of firms which did business with the school board. NEUBAUER CALIFORNIANA — The early development of California and Orange county is one of the outstanding sagas of the history of the West with its colorful personalities and hardworking pioneers. Anaheim has had its share of such outstanding people. There was Madame Helena Modjeska, acclaimed as the greatest all-time dramatic actress in the English speaking world; Henryk Stienkler author of "Quo Vadis" and Enclen Paprocki, eminent caricaturist, and a host of others. The McFadden brothers, however, seem to be outstanding in their development of the southern portion of Orange county. The McFadden story is truly an outstanding chapter in Orange county's development. SAGA—When James and Robert McFadden acquired 4,000 acres land from the heirs of the uncho Sanitago Santa Ana in 1884, a saga of Orange county history began. The McFaddens realized the importance of the land they had acquired. There was an abundance of water in the great subterranean reservoir which was not tamed but work was abandoned and not resumed until 1891. The first train over the McFadden Railroad was run on January 12, 1892. They operated the road primarily as a freight carrier until the Southern Pacific bought the right-of-way in 1899. The system was abandoned in the early 1930s. DEVELOPMENT — Growth of Los Angeles to Southern California's jobbing and wholesale center took the trade away from Newport Pier. The Southern Pacific continued to operate the three freight posts and pier until it became more feasible for Los Angeles and San Francisco jobbers to deal more directly. The business dwindled and gradually disappeared entirely when the Southern Pacific raised its rates. It was then that Los Angeles harbor was developing and absorbed the business formerly handled by the Newport pier and wharves at Redondo and Santa Monica. The last commercial shipment over the Newport Pier was a cargo from Australia in January 1907. In 1911 the Southern Pacific had the outer 144 feet of the structure removed to avoid unkeep and public liability. BISCEGLIA AT POLE INDIANAPOLIS (A)—Laurence M. Bisceglia of Long Beach, yesterday won the "pole position" among spectators for the 600-mile race at the Indianapolis motor speedway May 30. The 53-year-old mechanic was at the gate first for the third straight year. He bettered his 1950 performance by 11 days 1 hour. Spring Brings Out the Sport In Congress WASHINGTON (U.) — Spring, that loveliest of all seasons, has come to Washington. It even has invaded the U.S. senate. The Senate Banking committee, for example, had asked Herbert Hoover to drop around yesterday for a little chat on the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC). It turned out the former president doesn't care a sheep for the RFC, even though he's the man who thought it up in the first place. Well, the talk was full of interest rates, government corporations, funded debts. You couldn't have thought of a more unlikely place to spot your first robin of the season. In the middle of all this, Senator Robertson (D-Va) looked wistfully out at the lovely sky, and then leaned forward to ask Hoover: "Mr. President, do you still have that rod and Shakespeare reel I gave you in 1932?" Unfortunately, in the confusion that followed it was hard to make out whether fisherman Hoover said yes or no to fisherman Robertson. A few minutes later, and we were in the mountains. Senator Byrd (D-Va) was on the stand. He, too, was anti-RFC. Byrd said there is no point arguing over the assets of RFC, that not until it's abolished will anyone know what its assets really are. "There's an old saying in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia," said the senator from the R.M. SAGA—When James and Robe McFadden acquired 4,000 acres land from the heirs of the encho Sanitago de Santa Ana in 1968, a saga of Orange county history began. The McFaddens realized the honesty of the land they had acquired. There was an abundance of later in the great subterranean reservoir which was not tapped until the '60s and '70s. But with the development of agriculture, the pioneers had to find outlet for their produce. There are no roads to speak of. Mars were at distant points—San Diego and San Francisco. Los Angeles in those days was filling more than a sprawling pueblo. San Diego, with the terminus of an overland stage, was a latter marked for Orange county's dry and grain. Consequently, ocean shipping is the only means of transportation and Gospel Swamp—Newport became Orange county's shipping port. BUILDERS — The McFaddens added to fence their property in 1933. In order to do so they had a assignment of lumber shipped to Port Bay. But they never used for fencing. During the boom era, lumber was a mighty valuable commodity and they sold it shipment. They ordered another. But the idea didn't get built. The McFaddes, quite accidentally, were in profitable lumber trade. James and Robert had their father, John, who settled in southern California come down to handle this end of the business. They bought the dock and warehouse D. M. Dorman and a Captain Helia built in 1872 to facilitate brisk humber trade. The John Pier Co., San Francisco, placed on sailing ships on the Newport San Francisco schedule. In a year they added another ship. In 1876, the McFaddens built a mimer of their own. It was the port, a ship of shallow draft designed to navigate the bay with difficulty. Bisceglia and his Fox Terrier, Wiggles, plan to spend the next month in his 18-year-old automobile at gate three. A few minutes later, and we were in the mountains. Senator Byrd (D-Va) was on the stand. He, too, was anti-RFC. Byrd said there is no point arguing over the assets of RFC, that not until it's abolished will anyone know what its assets really are. "There's an old saying in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia," said the senator from the B.R.M. O.V., "that goes like this: 'You can't measure a snake until you kill it.'" Let's climb down from the Blue Ridge, and enter the senate proper. It too was acting collish. Senator Chavez (D-NM) floor, and he said he wasn't to give it up. He said he had more things he wanted against a bill to import farm labor. Senator Wherry (R-Neb) had forgotten that Chavez floor and had promised senator he could talk forutes. When Rule, the bay pilot, was named as he and Mike Ortega marking out the channel for arrival, the McFaddens deto do something about it. They built their now-famous bay like so many others, had reverses, but they did not diversity stop them. When a ripped out 600 feet of the McFaddens had it rein two months. MILROADERS — To facilitate brisk lumber trade in Santa the McFaddens were obliged build themselves a railroad their pier to accommodate boatrons. Roadbed was begun in 1887.
