Report Ready on Wind Machines
A summary report of the second years field survey of the effectiveness of wind machines in Orange county frost protection has just been released by the Agricultural Extension service, according to Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg.
The report covers fruit quality records from 40 orchards of which 26 orchards were equipped with 40 wind machines. Pack out records from unprotected orchards in the same localities were secured to measure the effectiveness of wind machine protection. The survey was made during two unusually cold winters—1949 and 1950. The survey indicated that in the coldest seasons supplementary heaters will add to the protection of the orchards. In normal winters wind machines if properly placed and powered will provide satisfactory protection.
Electric powered machines showed more economical costs than gasoline motored machines.
Pack out grades of fruit reported in the protected orchards averaged 48 per cent first grade, 15 per cent second grade, 5 per cent orchard run and 28 per cent culls or products. Unprotected orchards
Pressure Groups Work on Prorate
First intermingling of citrus varieties in many years is fast running into a debacle and causing members of the Orange Administrative committee (prorate) to reach for the bromide.
For the third straight week last Thursday, pressure groups from all producing areas swarmed over the committee rooms at 111 W. Seventh at in Los Angeles, making their voices heard in no uncertain terms. Some even put it in writing.
It took the committee until nearly noon to complete the routine business of setting this prorate: 1000 cars on Southern California invoices, 224 cars of Tulare county valencias, 100 Arizona valencias, and 22 cars of southern valencias — the latter being cut down from a request of 122.
The committee is torn between navel shippers who want to string out their shipping season to get some money out of the windup; Tulare shippers anxious to get their fast maturing valencias on the market to beat a threat of septoria disease, and San Diego and Orange county white dollars.
Rains in San Diego Save One Irrigation
SAN DIEGO AT—Week-end rain in San Diego county amounted to one round of irrigation for farm lands, the county agricultural department said today.
The story also produced a run-off of about 181 million gallons in city reservoirs, the water department reported. That equals only three days of city needs.
Week-end rainfall here was 56 of an inch but ranged up to more than an inch in the interior mountains.
A rain-making contract for the reservoir areas with Rainfall Corp. of America ended yesterday.
Estelle Robison
Mrs. Estelle Robison, 7341 E.Cerritos, left a week ago Monday to visit her son Paul and his family at 2150 San Pasqual, Pasadena. Not feeling well the son suggested his mother have a check up. She went to the Huntington Park hospital where she passed away April 28.
Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Robison moved to Stanton, Oct. 15, 1916, from Long Beach. Robison was manager of the Stanton Lumber Co., for 29 years until his retirement in 1950. The Robisons have taken a prominent part in community activities.
Mrs. Robison is also survived
protection of the orchards. In normal winters wind machines if properly placed and powered will provide satisfactory protection.
Electric powered machines showed more economical costs than gasoline motored machines.
Pack out grades of fruit reported in the protected orchards averaged 40 per cent first grade, 15 per cent second grade, 5 per cent orchard run and 28 per cent culls or products. Unprotected orchards in the same localities averaged 23 per cent first grade, 12 per cent second grade, 4 per cent orchard run and 11 per cent culls or products.
Other interesting features included in the new bulletin are—a frost map of Orange county; a chart showing comparative minimum temperature of the winters of 1937, 1949 and 1950; and a typical temperature pattern of an orchard with wind machine installation.
A limited number of these reports were prepared and are available as long as the supply lasts, says Farm Advisor Weiberg.
4-H Clubs Have National Center
Fulfillment of the dreams of 4-H leaders for a permanent headquarters in the nation's capitol came true last month when national 4-H club center in Washington, D.C., was established with the purchase of the former Chevy Chase junior college property on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. At their National Engagement and other times during the year, 4-H club members can now more conveniently meet and study right on the doorstep of democracy, H. W. Longfellow, local farm advisor said today.
Nancy Bascom, Orange county 4-H club member, attended the National 4-H convention at Washington, D.C., this past year when she was selected Diamond Star member from California.

6. Establish a Department of Medical Services to handle all
100 Arizona valencias, and 25 cars of southern valencias — the latter being cut down from a request of 122.
The committee is torn between navel shippers who want to string out their shipping season to get some money out of the windup; Tulare shippers anxious to get their fast maturing valencias on the market to beat a threat of septoria disease, and San Diego and Orange county whips declaring that their valencias are already meeting maturity tests.
Add to this the fact of a 60,000 carload tree crop for Southern California valencias, and one can readily see why the prorate boys are wracking their brains to come up with a suitable marketing policy.
Just as the committee was setting down to decide on a shipping schedule for the valencia deal, Orange county interests came up with a written recommendation which they passed out to committee men and observers alike. The proposal asked that Tulare county valencias be strung out late in June with a maximum weekly shipment of 450 cars. The Orange county shippers would like to start with 719 cars for the week ending May 19; 960 for the weeks ending May 26 and June 2; 1000 cars for the week of June 9.
Tulare county interests promptly tossed in a motion to table adopting any schedule for another week.
Consensus among committee men is that "somebody is going to be unhappy regardless of how we vote."
The committee slashed early maturity requests from 112 to 25 cars on the basis of tests showing that the fruit in Southern California had a wide range of maturity, but the average at 8.6 to 1 was not considered too satisfactory.
With all the fresh fruit we have to move this year, certainly no one in the trade is going to click his heels at receiving some valencias. These 25 cars must be followed by 36,000 more before the season ends," they argued.
Meanwhile, deadline for short life alliances—fruit that must be shipped here—have not have a check up. She went to the Huntington Park hospital where she passed away April 28.
Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Robison moved to Stanton, Oct. 15, 1916, from Long Beach. Robison was manager of the Stanton Lumber Co., for 29 years until his retirement in 1950. The Robisons have taken a prominent part in community activities.
Mrs. Robison is also survived by a brother, Elmer J. Doyle of Long Beach and two sisters, Mrs. Grace Hume, Long Beach and Mrs. Anna Oldfield of Los Angeles.
Services will be at the Wheat-Halverson Mortuary; 6308 Gage at Huntington Park; Wednesday at 1 o'clock, which Christian Science service reader Edward Pugh will attend. Intervention will be at Interwood Memorial Park.

6. Establish a Department of Medical Services to handle all functions of the Departments of Mental Hygiene and Public Health; all medical licensing and sanitary inspection; and medical functionse of the Youth Authority, Departments of Corrections and Veterans Affairs.
In the legislature, meanwhile, Assembly committees:
Deleted nearly $4,000,000 in construction funds from Governor Warren's bill for two alcoholic research and treatment clinics, leaving $460,000 for planning and sites;
Refused passage to a series of bills regulating parking lots;
Turned down legislation to let the state regulate dealings of private utilities with their parent firms or affiliates;
The Senate defeated a proposal by Senator H. R. Judah (R-Santa Cruz) to require annual brake and light inspection for California's 5,000,000 vehicles.
A measure to lower accreditation standards for law schools just got by the upper house by a bare majority vote, 21 to 11. The bill sent to the Assembly also would bar self-taught or correspondence school lawyers.
Some farm fields in Puerto Rico have been cropped continuously to sugarcane for more than 100 years.
Weather
Continued from Page 1 also fell in Wyoming and eastern Idaho. Temperatures dropped below freezing in some parts of the snow belt.
A tornado skipped through thickly populated areas of Oklahoma City last night and caused extensive property damage. No serious injuries were reported. Roofs of several homes were ripped off as the twister struck.
Temperatures climbed into the 80s in parts of the central states yesterday and more of the summerlike weather was forecast today.
The flooding Mississippi river still managed river towns in Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. Levees in major areas were holding but the river's fall was slowed because of heavy rains over the week-end.
