County Mobilization Committee To Give Draft Aid to Farmers Farm workers eligible for Selective Service will receive assistance concerning agricultural deferment from the recently organized Orange county Agricultural Mobilization committee. This is the first job of the committee headed by R. E. Beem, Smeltzer, chairman and Eric E. Eastman, Santa Ana, secretary. Farm working registrants or their employers may ask their local draft boards to get or verify information from the chairman of the county Agricultural Mobilization committee concerning the products grown on the farm and the duties of the worker. The new committee will not make recommendations on the worker's draft status. On the basis of the information obtained by the committee, the local draft boards will decide the applicant's eligibility. If the registrant works on a farm outside the county in which his draft board is located, the draft board will refer the request to the Agricultural Mobilization committee chairman in the county in which he works. Each individual is responsible for giving his local board the facts and evidence to establish a claim concerning his classification. SCHN 141 WEST CENTER STREET Twelve Dead As New Riot Stirs Iran TEHRAN (UP) — New violence breached today in Abadan, with Iran center of the Anglo-Iranian oil company. Authorities reports placed the toll from a lot yesterday at three Euro- and nine Iranians dead, and British missing, believed ten and killed. In London British Foreign Secretary Herbert Morrison told House of Commons the British government is "watching the nation closely and reserves the right to act as we see fit to pro-British lives and property." Morrison said two British and Italian seamen and nine aliens were killed in yesterday's attack, that eight Britons, two them children, were injured. Troop reinforcements with stored cars arrived in Abadan but tension remained high "there are again at this moment threatening crowds and ambulies," one source said this morning. The oil field areas are quieter agitators have now concentrated in Abadan," he said, adding while only about 40 per cent of the workers went to work at Anglo-Iranian refinery there. Highest Landing Flier Awaits Rescue by Mt. Ranier Rangers McCHORD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. (UP)—An off-duty flight by an air force flier left high and presumably dry atop 14,408-foot Mount Rainier late yesterday. The flier is Lieut. John Hodgkins, 41, of Selma, Calif. He huddled in his souped-up Piper cub plane throughout the night in 20 below zero temperature while the Air Force and park service tried to figure ways and means of getting him down again. Friends say Hodgkins has a desire to be known as the flier who has landed and taken off from a higher point than anyone else in the world. He claimed he had done so with a 10,600-foot mountain—where it is informants couldn't say—and decided on capturing Mount Rainier after hearing somebody in South America had landed and taken off a peak higher than his 10,600-foot "airport." So yesterday afternoon Hodgkins spread straw over the runway at a tiny airport at Spanaway, a dozen miles from Tacoma and about 60 miles from Mount Rainier, then took off in his ski-equipped plane. Sgt. Charles Bunch, 36, Tacoma, flying in another plane, accompanied Hodgkins as far as the mountain in clear weather. "I saw Hodgkins land the plane in a stretch of snow in the crater on top of the mountain," Bunch said. "Then I saw him get out of the plane and try to start it again by swinging on the propeller. Birthday—13th Ticketed—13th; By No. 13—Natch GLENDALE (UP)—This story could get in the newspapers only today—Friday the 13th. At 10:15 a.m. Milton Ferguson was ticketed for a traffic violation by officer Hal Pitta. Pitt's wrote down Ferguson's birth date—August 18, 1913. Then Ferguson looked at Pitt's badge. It was No. 13, match. The oil field areas are quieter agitators have now concentrated in Abadan," he said, adding while only about 40 per cent of the workers went to work at Anglo-Iranian refinery there night, about 80 per cent were the job today. George Northcroft, field manager here for the British-government-controlled Anglo-Iranian company blamed the violence on the outlawed comist Tudeh party. The riot ended after 24 days of a competitively peaceful strike by 5000-10000 oil workers seeking wage peases. The communists previously have been little public part in the which extreme nationalists have carrying on to have the industry nationalized. "He had stripped down the plane of all excess weight before leaving, and one of the things he left behind was the plane's automatic starter." "If he can get the motor started he can take off, as it's fairly flat where he is." A B-17 made two drops of emergency equipment into the crater last night. The drops landed several hundred feet away from Hodgkins in the crater, which is about a mile and a half across and full of snowdrifts, mounds and caverns. Barber of Seville Set for November The Anaheim citizens committee for opera in Anaheim announced today that the date for presenting a production of "Barber of Seville" by a Los Angeles opera company has been set ahead to next fall, probably the first week of November. Reason given is the large number of pre-summer events on the Anaheim calendar which have been set for some time. The local committee feels also it should have more time to make plans for the event. The opera originally was scheduled for the end of May. The "village smithy" hasn't been eliminated entirely in California by the machine age, according to the Census Bureau. Annual receipts of California blacksmith shops amount to more than 4½ million dollars. In Hartford, the Connell legislature session threaten break up in panic. Mr. Dave one of the members, calm crowd by arising and saying Speaker, this is either the I Judgment, or it is not. If it there is no need for adjournment If it is, I desire to be fouring my duty. I move that cate be brought in, and that we ceed to business." The next day the sun rose clear and bright as it had had before. The strange darkness lasted 14 hours. Ill-Omened 13 Tales of the ill-omened man 13 are equally endless. Mr. Woodrow Wilson and Lord Guided their lives by those numerals. Many people health become the thirteenth member a party. One course, was that fateful day in 29 when Wall st. went down in ins. The date the market hit bottom was, you guessed it. Nov. 13. The other black Friday is perhaps not so well known. It occurred in New England, May 19, 1780. 10 o'clock that morning a haze began forming which, by noon, wered the entire states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Eastern New York and northeastern Pennsylvania were so within the area of blackness. People Frightened As the black mantle deepened, indies and torches were lit, schools were let out, and the people were awe-stricken. John Greenleaf Whittler described the one, saying, "...men prayed and women wept, all ears grew sharp to hear the doom-blast of the impetus shatter the blue sky." In Hartford, the Connecticut dislature session threatened to peak up in panic. Mr. Davenport, one of the members, calmed the crowd by arising and saying, "Mr. Beaker, this is either the Day of judgment, or it is not. If it is not here is no need for adjourning. It is, I desire to be found doing my duty. I move that candles brought in, and that we proceed to business." fenth. Room number 13, foo, is usually omitted. One incident, which occurred recently in Los Angeles, left an apartment house manager completely stunned. New tenants, who had left a deposit for a choice apartment, suddenly announced that they had changed their mind. They didn't even want the deposit back. When asked why, they caustically informed the amazed manager that the numbers in the address added up to 13. They wanted none of it. One time the Irish government became so concerned with the popular fear of the number, that they devised a scheme which, they hoped, would shame the public out of its foolish dread. They ruled that a new silver shilling would be coined which would equal 13 pence of Irish copper currency. The people would surely get used to, the number, the legislators thought. The only trouble, though, was that the superstitious Irish would never use the new coins. In fact they invented a new superstition—it became bad luck to have one of the coins in your pocket. Many Happenings The day and the number are not without their good sides though. It was Friday, Oct. 12, that Columbus discovered the continent of America. George Washington was born on a Friday. The pilgrim fathers arrived at Plymouth Rock Friday, Feb. 22, 1732. The Mayflower arrived on a Friday in 1620. The United States originally, had 13 colonies, and the flag now bears 13 red and white stripes. And best of all, 12 journalism students and an advisor—12 in all—came to town yesterday and put out the Friday the 13th issue of the Anaheim Gazette. Reserve This Date...
