SISTER SUE I'll BUILD MORE HOME THE REAL ARE G Anaheim Gazette WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11, 1931 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Calls, Cables Bury Congressmen WASHINGTON (P)—A barrage of telegrams and telephone calls descended upon Congress today, most of them protesting the firing of General MacArthur by President Truman. Senator Nixon (R-Calif.) for example found $78 telegrams awaiting for him when he arrived this morning, most of them from California. An office aide said "and 90 per cent of them urged the impeachment of the president." Senator Capchart (R-Ind.) said telephone calls and telegrams protesting the firing of MacArthur "are pouring into my office from all over Indiana." He added: "I've never seen anything like it. One woman even wept in talking to me. She said it was a terrible thing." Assistants to Senator Bridges (R-NH), who has been a vigorous MacArthur supporter, said the "telephones have been ringing constantly and we have a half bushel of telegrams." "One woman called long distance to insist that the president be impeached," a Bridges' office aide told reporters. Senator Kerr (D-Okla) who praised President Truman's action, said there "has been some increase in telegrams today." "Most of them from Oklahoma approve the position I have taken," Kerr said "Telegrams from outside differ." Kerr sharply criticized Gen. MacArthur earlier this week. Many Californians apparently received the news before they fired last night and began sending protest telegrams then. Aides of Senator Knowland (Calif.) said they received 322 telegrams early today compared with an average of 10 to 20 on other days. "Nearly all of them were testing the firing of Gen. MacArthur," a Knowland assistant said. Telephone operators at Capitol reported "an extreme heavy volume" of calls, both local and long distance, during the forenoon. Nurserymen to Host Ag.
