8 Anaheim Gazette WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA COLLECTOR'S ITEM—Mary Lou Murphy, of Indianapolis, chooses specimens of starfish at Daytona Beach, Fla., where the fish have been found in great numbers during this season. Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd layeth down his life for his sheep.—John 10:11. IT'S TRUE — Nathaniel Briggs of New Hampshire was issued a patent for a washing machine on March 28, 1797. Expert Clears Question on Salting Meat When is a roast salted? This is a frequent question of new, as well as experienced homemakers, says Reba Staggs, well known meat cookery expert. A beef, weal, pork or lamb roast may be salted before, during or after cooking, points out Miss Staggs. The time does not make any difference, as the salt will not penetrate to a depth of more than I am the good shepherd: the good sheepard layeth down his life for his sheep—John 10:11. IT'S TRUE — Nathaniel Briggs of New Hampshire was issued a patent for a washing machine on March 28, 1797. ONE MAN'S OPINION — Carl (Pony) Swenson who is known in Fullerton for his keen analytical disposition hammers out a daily column for the News-Tribune. He is a shrewd observer of the human scene who has a faculty of terrestrial out the detail behind the news. The other day he wrote— Although bloodied, bent and badly beaten, our fair neighbor to the south, Anaheim, still doesn't know—or doesn't want to admit—that it's licked. The hassle, of course, is over the now famous strip of land along Highway 101 and extending between the two cities. First of all, Anaheim lost the fight to annex the land after a long, drawn out battle in Superior Court. Anaheim then took the case to the appellate court and lost. Then Anaheim petitioned for rehearing of the case. It was tenled. Although a three-time loser, Anaheim now appears to be taking the case all the way to the State Supreme Court; and if it loses again, who knows? Maybe they'll go to the U. S. Supreme Court. In the meantime, of course, this is costing Anaheim taxpayers more money than they know—or the Anaheim city council dares let them know—to pay the legal fees. The situation for Anaheim is so hopeless that to continue the legal battle is a case of pouring money down a rat hole. One of our (Fullerton's) better legal minds made this terse observation of Anaheim's stubbornness: "While they're trying to save face, they're catching it at the opposite end." Now don't get me wrong, friend—that's a quote from Pony Swen- the legal fees. The situation for Anaheim is so hopeless that to continue the legal battle is a case of pouring money down a rat hole. Now, don't get me wrong, friend—that's a quote from Pony Swenson of Fullerton. Personally, I refuse to comment on the ground that any statement might tend to be indecorous. Congratulations — Barbara Ann Eyan is to be congratulated for her outstanding citizenship, scholarship, and leadership that won for her the right to represent Anaheim at Sacramento this year. MERRY-GO-ROUND — According to Grover Walters Fullerton pumps 96.3 per cent of its domestic water at its plant in Anaheim. On the other hand Anaheim pumps five per cent of its water and gets 95 per cent from the metropolitan water district. . . . P. J. (Peck) Thayer has mighty photogenic hands judging from those photos in the Union Oil company's On Tour magazine. Erwin Price and Milt Varner are also pictured. "You could always tell when Milt and his brother were in town," Ray Davis said as he recalled the good olde daze. "You could hear them all over Anaheim from the rumpus they made at the bowling alley." Bill Karam hasn't forgotten how Milt used to bowl for the old Oyster Loaf five This charming daytime dress is such a pleasing style that you'll want to make up several for warm weather. Note the useful pockets and the clever waistline treatment. Pattern No. 3232 is a sew-rite perforated pattern in sizes 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20; 40. Size 12 requires 37½ yards of 36 or 39-inch fabric. For this pattern, send 25 cents plus 5 cents for first-class mailing, in coins, your name, address, pattern number and size wanted to Barbara Bell, Anaheim Gazette, 367 W. Adams St., Chicago 6, Ill. Gilbert Koehler tossed his hat into the ring. Though the schoolboard shouldn't be political, they play politics, otherwise the present situation might not have arisen. NITECAPSULE — A lot of women used to go to see their doctors to see if they could have children; now they go and see the landlord.
