For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazette MONDAY, MARCH 26, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Collins (Continued from Page 2) Jack Barry, who coaches Holy Cross and third baseman Frank "Home Run" Baker, how a Trappe, Md., farmer. Collins, known as "Cocky" to oldtime baseball figures, was born in Millerton, N.Y., son of John and Mary Collins, May 2, 1887. Connie Mark first became interested in Collins when the future Hall of Fame member played for a Rockville, Conn., semipro team under the name of Sullivan. Mack signed him under that name in 1906 when he took a western swing with the A's and played in a few games. He was captain elect at Columbia university at the time. The forthright Collins freely admitted to Columbia officials, when asked, that he had played pro baseball. That cost him the captaincy at Columbia but he remained as coach while earning his degree in 1907, one of the new undergraduate coaches at any major college. He came into his own in 1909 when Mack finally assigned him to second base after experimenting with him at shortstop and in the outfield. He batted 346 that season and dropped below the magic .300 figure only in 1917-18. His batting average for six PCL Opening (Continued from Page 2) a veteran of Coast League wars, Fred Hailey of Hollywood who won the pennant for the Stars in 1949. Two other newcomers to the managerial ranks square off here, with baseball's immortal Rogers Hornsby piloting the Seattle Rainiers against the Angels, skippered by Stan Hack, the former Chicago Cub star. Hack has been managing the past two years at Des Moines and last year with Springfield, Mass., in the International League, but this is his debut here. Hornsby managed a successful club at Beaumont in the Texas League. The other standby are Lefty O'Doul of San Francisco, Bill Sweeney of Portland and Del Baker at San Diego. Best set club, off spring exhibition game records, is Hollywood, while Sweeney has much the same outfit which closed with rush to land in the fourth spot in the windup last fall. Most of the others will have to make the best of what they've got until their major league affiliations break loose from their talent and send help. Attendance for the four opening games last year was 41,178, no record. The slate found Portland at Hollywood (5738); San Francisco at San Diego (10,653); Four to Attend Lumber Meeting Anaheim will be represented at the 34th annual Lumbermen's meeting to be held April 4-6 at the Ambassador hotel, Los Angeles, under sponsorship of the Southern California Retail Lumber association, it has been announced. U.S. Senator Harry P. Cain of Washington state will top a number of outstanding speakers at the convention which will be pointed to changing economic conditions. Attending from Anaheim will be: Ernest Ganahl of Ernest Ganahl. Lumber Co.; Frank N. Gibbs of Gibbs Lumber Co.; H. G. Merrill of Patten-Blinn Lumber Co.; and Lyle M. Brewster of Oregon Lumber Distributors. During World War II almost 6000 U.S. Marines and Japanese died in the capture by the United States of the Island of Tarawa, which is about the size of Central Park in New York. Los Angeles at Sacramento (12,-938) and the 11,649 at the Oakland-Seattle opener. The 1950 race ended like this: Oakland, San Diego, Hollywood, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles and Sacramento. Opening pitching assignments include Gordon Maltzberger of Hollywood opposing Orval Gruw He came into his own in 1909 when Mack finally assigned him to second base after experimenting with him at shortstop and in the outfield. He batted 346 that season and dropped below the magic .300 figure only in 1917-18. His batting average for six World Series was .330. He played in four with Philadelphia and two with the Chicago White Sox to whom he was sold for the then amazing price of $50,000 in 1914. His honor never was questioned when some of his 1919 Chicago teammates sold out to gamblers in baseball's greatest scandal. He stayed with Chicago until 1926 when he was released after being the White Sox manager two seasons. Connle Mack immediately resigned him and made him team captain. After age caught up with him, Collins became a coach with the Athletics and left that post to join Yawkey, in building up the Red Sox from a tag outfit to a powerful pennant contender. Two of his products with the Sox, of whom he was most proud, were Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr. Collins personally scouted and bought both. He helped Yawkey engineer the deals which brought such figures as Jimmy Foxx and Lefty Grove to Boston. He helped build a farm system which now extends from Louisville in the triple-A American Association down through the lower minors. Sometimes brusque but always honest, Eddie Collins never turned aside a question. He holds many baseball records, played the most games, 2651 (477 consecutive), most putouts 6527, assists 1629 and most chances accepted 14,156. Collins' first wife, Mable Doane of Philadelphia, who mothered his two sons, died in 1943 and he subsequently married Mrs. Emily Jane Hall, a widow, in 1945. The latter marriage ceremony was performed by his son, Father Paul Collins, an Episcopalian clergyman, who now is vacationing in Europe. His other immediate survivor LEGAL NOTICES (Pub.
