Bud planned the house while he was an art student at USC. He found from his work with modern furniture construction that functionality and beauty can be compatible and he decided to apply those principles to a house. He drew up the plans carefully and began construction in January of 1950. A cement contractor helped pour the cement for the slab on which the house is built and from them on. Bud was pretty much on his own. Thanks to his industry and skill, the house was ready for occupancy in July and the Mahoneys moved in. It is a two bedroom house at present, but is arranged so that a third bedroom may easily be added later. The spacious master bedroom has a large wardrobe, a built-in chest of drawers and dressing table, and a specially designed headboard for the bed with all sorts of open shelves and storage space. One wall of the room is entirely of glass and opens to the patio. Full length draperies on traverse rods provide privacy. The second wall is papered in an ivy pattern and the colors in the wall paper have been picked up in the green wall-to-wall carpeting, the green draperies, the chartreuse bedspread and the chocolate brown of the two remaining walls. The children's room has wooden wainscoting that extends three and a half feet up the plaster walls.
