'It Did Seem Rather High'
LONG BEACH UP—A check for $990,012.56 was delivered to Mrs. Mary Mason today.
It was from an insurance company and represented a refund on a policy covering furniture which had been sold.
"The amount seemed rather high," Mrs. Mason said in a very conservative statement explaining the circumstances. She said she called the insurance company and learned the amount should have been $12.58.
The company explained that its check writing machine went haywire.

PARIS HAS 'BOOTLEG'
FLOWER MARKET
PARIS UP—A Paris bootleg flower market is flourishing. Oddly enough, it is located near police headquarters and a bridge over the Seine is the place where the biggest business is done.
Bootleg sellers pay no rent for stalls, and generally operate without licenses. The flower sellers say they do this to eliminate the middle man. They operate in the pre-dawn, just before the day shift policemen take over from the ones who have been working since midnight. They have to look out for ambitious police, cops who have had arguments with their wives or ones whose stomachs are acting up. Otherwise they get along without interference.

Garnets range in size from tiny grains of sand to large gems and have been found in every color except blue. To qualify as gems worth setting, garnets must be of unblemished transparency and preferably—the red ones at least—have the glow of a smoldering fire. Ancient gossip has it that Neah used garnets to light the ark.

Pick out a handbag at Penner's for the biggest selection in this area has been advertised. Penner's means what it says because right now, a few days before Easter, there are three large tables of handbags in various price ranges on display.
THE BUNNY GETS BUSY
The Easter season is a time for remembering special friends. The easiest way to play Easter bunny is with an Easter card, bright and gay and cheery. Mitchell's of Anaheim has an unusually fine assortment.
Fond aunts, uncles and cousins who like to surprise the little folks on Easter morning, sometimes hesitate to add gifts of candy to already overloaded appetites. An appropriate substitute is a phonograph record. The Baton Music company recommends "Peter Cotton Tall" by Two Tor Balzer and Fran Allison and "The Little White Duck" by Burl Lyne.
Some of the happiest of Easter memories center around the gift of a real live pet: Tommy Watts of the Anaheim Feed and Seed Store has on hand, 2000 baby chicks and will give them away free at the rate of 10 to each adult as long as the supply lasts. There are no strings attached to this offer; nothing to buy. Merely step up and take away the chicks.
