County Burglars Busy on Weekend
Loot valued at several hundred dollars was stolen by burglars in a series of raids at various points in the county over the weekend. Three Costa Mesa garages located in the same block were looted of tools.
George T. DeRouline reported theft of tools valued at $30, his neighbor, Donald E. Smith, losing tools valued at $88 and another neighbor, Clinton Hull, reporting theft of tools worth $40. All live in the 200 block of Mesa dr., Costa Mesa.
Other minor burglaries were reported at the home of Robert P. Beal, near Placentia, the Bar-B-Q cafe on Huntington Beach blvd., west of Garden Grove, the home of John C. Primrose lost a homemade cake; the Gina Drive-In theater at Cypress lost refreshments. At the Orange grove of Carl E. Fisher, 9221 Huston st., Anaheim, a 12-year-old boy was arrested and lodged in the juvenile home for picking two boxes of oranges.

titlist, sounded a warning by overwhelming Illinois, the Big Ten champion, in a warmup game, 91-72.
2. Brigham Young, kingpin of the Skyline Six, impressed the basketball world with an impressive sweep to the National Invitation championship at Madison Square Garden.
The BYU Cougars downed St. Louis, Seton Hall and Dayton in order, smashing a red-hot Dayton team, 62-43. They think they can make it a grand slam, but conditions are against them.
Last year when City College turned the trick for the first time in history, all games of both tournaments were played on CCNY's home floor at the Garden.
To equal the achievement, Brigham Young would have to survive days of travel and play on three floors. Strange terms, however, hold no terrors for these Utah lads, who have never had a home court of their own.
"It's going to be tough because the boys are mighty tired," said BYU Coach Stanley Watts. "But the boys are on fire—they think they can do it."
Brigham Young showed such poise and class in the invitation that fans wondered how the team ever lost seven games. The Cougars have a 27-7 record.
In Roland Minson, a six-foot basket marksman who covers a floor like a tarpaulin, and jumping Mel Hutchins, a tremendous defender, the Far Westerners have two of the best performers to show in the East.
Brigham Young opens with little San Jose State Wednesday. If the Cougars get past that one, they will meet the Kansas State-Arizona winner. That should give them at least half the answer.
Kentucky will open its bid against Loufsville at Raleigh tomorrow night in the second game of a doubleheader that also features crippled North Carolina State and Villanova.

to the extent that much of it might be lost in the ocean.
Under agreement between the Orange county Water district and the Metropolitan Water district, a special price of $10 per acre foot has been allowed on this year's purchase of surplus Colorado river water, which has herefore cost the local district $18 per acre foot during the two years it has been purchased.
The $10 price, it is explained, is the same allowed to member units of the MWD. Because the newly formed Orange county Municipal Water district plans to seek annexation to the MWD in a local election late this summer, MWD granted the $10 price for the water this summer. The concession, however, is conditional. If Orange county voters approve annexation to MWD by Dec. 1, the $10 price will stand. Otherwise, failure to annex by that date, will cost the local water district another $5 per acre foot.
At $10 per acre foot, the district will pay $250,000 for the entire 25,000 feet. Another $5 per acre foot would mean an additional cost of $175,000, payable in 1953.
Water district officials report that purchases of surplus water the past two years has been reflected by rising levels in water wells of the county, helping to reduce the annual overdraft on the underground basin.
This season, promising to be one of the dryest on record, will find the surplus Colorado river water more welcome than ever, the officials said.
Among those witnessing the start of the flow Saturday were Vice-president E. T. Watson, Olive, of the Orange County Water district; Directors J. J. Denni of
County Near End Of Screening for Sewer Engineer
Screening of engineering firms applying for the job of designing and constructing Orange county's proposed sewerage system was expected to be completed Friday by a committee of the joint county sanitation districts, which has been interviewing firms for three days at the courthouse.
The special committee headed by chairman Willis H. Warner of the county supervisors, Councilman Virgil Reed of Santa Ana and Councilman Hugh Warden of Fulerton, is said to have interviewed 14 engineering firms from all sections of the state.
It is understood that the committee would narrow the field to three firms whose names would be presented to the full meeting of the joint sanitation district boards on March 28 final choice to be made by the boards.
Modification of the "Bacon" engineering plan for the county-wide sewerage system prepared by Engineer Vinton Bacon, formerly design engineer for the joint districts, now in charge of the state pollution board's engineering staff, is the first task the consulting engineering firm will be asked to undertake.
Rising costs of materials and labor since the plan was prepared by Bacon more than two years ago, would raise the total cost well beyond the amount of the $8,308,000 bond issues Voted two years ago. Thus it is necessary to cut down the program to fit the districts' finances.
The engineers then will have the task of designing and con-

In addition, Verry urged the court to declare a mistrial in the case when Deputy District Attorney Walter Steiner said he had affidavits from fellow-guests at Mrs. Tillery's hotel, claiming that she had shown no indication of pain either before or after she appeared in court last week.

Rotary Hears Walter Schmid
Walter Schmid, Garden Grove rancher who has been identified with many public organizations in Orange county, told the Anaheim Rotary club at noon today, "Let's not lose our sense of proportion," in the world picture.
Mr. Schmid, who reported to the club on his 100 day tour in Europe, said Europeans fear the U.S., is straining too much at the bit in arming against communism. The European nations fear they cannot keep up with the U.S., in rearming because of the weaknesses in their economic systems.
The speaker said the Marshall Plan has done "immeasurable good" in Europe. The best way for us to fight communism, he declared, is in the field of economics.
West Germany, Mr. Schmidt said, is opposed to communism. Newspapers of the zone reflect a lean of communism.
The speaker was introduced by Earle Woodward.
Ray Newest Gazette Ace
Latest "ace" Gazette paper carrier is Ronald Ray, 13, of 314 E. Alberta st.
Ronald poured on the pressure last weekend to secure three new subscriptions to the Gazette and this week joined the ranks of the top newsboys under the point rating system devised by Gazette Circulation Manager Lucy Hubbard. First class rating requires 250 points and the "ace" rating is attained only with 500 or more points.
Ronald's newly-acquired rating indicates that he is giving good service to the 99 homes on his route in Southeast Anaheim and is working steadily to bring in new subscriptions. The fact that he began working March 10, little more than a week ago, and during that time made his 500 points indicate something over the average willingness to get out and work hard for his rating and the extra money that goes with it. In two hours of work one day last week, he brought in nine "starts."
Ronald Ray is a seventh grade student at Fremont Junior high school with a preference for baseball and basketball in sports. His favorite diversion is ocean fishing.

Ronald Ray is a seventh grade student at Fremont Junior high school with a preference for baseball and basketball in sports. His favorite diversion is ocean fishing, surf, whale and deep-sea varieties. As a member of Placentia Sea Scout Ship 288, Ronald gets a satisfactory amount of deep-sea fishing on the "Placentian," the organization's 38-foot power cruiser. He rates as an apprentice Sea Scout after four months of membership.
"Apprentice Sea Scout is the lowest rung in the ladder," Ron said, "but I'm working for my Ordinary Sea Scout rate and I hope it won't be too long."
Ron is the only son of Mrs. Alberta Ray and was born in Fulleton. He has an eye to the future and wishes to go to college after graduation to study printing techniques. Then he hopes to make a career in newspapers as compositor, pressman or linotype operator. Of the three jobs, Ron says he prefers the pressman's.
Swallows Return To Capistrano
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO (PA)
—Right on schedule, the swallows swooped down on Mission San Juan Capistrano today.
They flew north out of the dawn and were on hand to greet the mission gardeners when they arrived for work about 6 a.m., Father Arthur J. Hutchinson, OFM, reported.
It was one of the largest contingents in recent years. Father Hutchinson said, and the arrival was one of he most peaceful on record. The swallows generally have to battle the swifts to repossess their homes. Last fall, however, most of the mission roofs were repaired, and the nests torn down.

The swifts, rather indolent creatures didn’t come back. So the swallows—the advance guard of the hundreds who will continue to come for the next two weeks—got off to a clear start on their annual chore of building nests in the historic mission. They will stay at least four months.
