HOMES - Green Thumb Sketches LEE'S GAL FRIDAY Garden Gossip When you undertake to CLEAN UP that corner of your BACK YARD, why not put it to work for you by planting a little VEGETABLE GARDEN? Vines—For Shade and Beauty. Climbing vines, well placed, can be beautiful as well as useful. Trained on pergolas and over porches, vines provide welcome shade and, as a tracery on house or garden walls, they are charming and graceful. The more rampant growers have to be watched and kept within bounds. No vine should be allowed to become overgrown and matted. Thin them out ruthlessly at pruning time, keeping the vines open and with just enough branches to create any desired effect. Among the popular climbers that wear well is the Bigenia Violacea which is easy to train and bears a profusion of lavender blossoms. This vine tolerates some shade. Other vines that do well in shade are the evergreen grapes and Fatshedera. The ivies, green, small-leaved or variegated, grow well in sun or shade, while the popular Bougainvillea grows and blooms best in full sun. Honeysuckles are hardy and INTERIOR—The brick fireplace The Kettlers cook dinner here for you by planting a little VEGETABLE GARDEN? Honeysuckles are hardy and useful, succeeding in practically any soil or location. With these, heavy pruning and strict training to pattern and space will create a thing of beauty; when neglected they become matted and coarse. March Gardening March is the greatest gardening month of the year. It is the month when the greatest number of flower and vegetable seeds are started. It is also a good time to plant summer-flowering bulbs and an excellent time to fertilize your garden and lawn. Bare root roses and deciduous trees are still available, but the time for planting them is growing short. Camellia and Azalea varieties should be chosen now, while they are in bloom, to assure getting the preferred shades. Kettler at 13522 E. Katella ave. owes its running to a surplus army barracks. Some of the salvageable lumber plus new building materials in a clever design make it the attractive home it is today. Beyond the car port at the left, a house is under construction. Hard Work Turns Surplus Barracks into New 'House That Bob Built' By JOAN S. WHITE is the house that Bob built his wife's help. The Kettlers made their home a hobby was paid off in economy, real satisfaction and a heap of table living. House is set in a two and acre grove of young orange which borders Katella ave. 100 square feet include three rams and bath, a convenientetric U-shaped kitchen, room, pantry, living room. Adjacent to the house is a house under construction the tiny one bedroom home in town. Something had to be done and quickly! Bob had the orange acreage and he and his wife, Marge, burned the midnight oil to select a house plan that would suit their needs and to find ways and means of having the house built. Suddenly there came an opportunity to buy a surplus two-story army barracks. It would have to be dismantled and hauled piece by piece to the building site. They would have to take a chance on the amount of to emerge from the chaos of sawdust, scattered nails and empty paint cans. The result is a neat green and white house surrounded by lawn and flowers. Visit the Kettlers today, and you will find country living at its best. The vegetable garden is planted and tender young seedlings peep up from a cold frame. The children frolic in the spacious yard with nine collie puppies. The interior of the house combines eye appeal with utility. Ageratum, the Blue Flower, is a fine edging flower plants should be sheared to move old flowers and encourage new growth. Snapdragons are perennials, usually are grown as annuals. The tall spikes of showy flowers are fine in the middle backgroun of beds and for cutting. Lobelia is another fine edging plant, coming in light and blue and white. The small flowers are produced in abundance over a long season. A form w longer trailing branches medium blue flowers is used in rockeries and pots. No garden is complete with the fragrance of Stocks, the liflower of old time gardens. Strains are tall with I branches, grown especially cutting, while others are low much branched to give maxin display in beds. It should be noted that only about 70% of the stems will come doube, the reason be that the singles are necessary seed production, since the doub do not set seed. Fibrous Begonias For a little plant that gives fine display where little wants to grow, give the shiny, leafed fibrous begonia a try. Colorful leaves of copper, red pale green will brighten up corners and the deepest shade. The begonia will thrive unheavy foliaged trees where e grass refuses to grow. The fibrous begonia, which grows from cuttings or seeds should not be confused with tuberous begonia which grown from seed or propagated from tuber divisions. The fibrous type, when cut back each year in winter, will grow indinitely. Begonias like an acid food it should not be put in direct contact with the stems. The plant do their best when kept moist all times. Begonias are ideal borders along walks, they color to window boxes and they make good potted plants for lea or wall. The varieties frequently found in the Southern California area are the Indian Maid, which is copper-leafed plant with flowers; the Scandinavian Plain variety with medium greens Bob had the orange acreage and he and his wife, Marge, burned the midnight oil to select a house plan that would suit their needs and find ways and means of having the house built. Suddenly there came an opportunity to buy a surplus two-story army barracks. It would have to be dismantled and hauled piece by piece to the building site. They would have to take a chance on the amount of salvageable materials. Should they do it? They did and that was the beginning of a building project that is not finished even yet. First things come first, of course, so Bob took advantage of a slack season to take leave of absence from his job as mechanic for the Placentia Orange Growers association, and immediately started to bone up on building codes, construction principles, etc. He wisely relied on professional contractors for the most difficult assignments such as the electric wiring. But Marge and Bob Kettler and a host of helpful friends did the rest. Six weeks after the foundation was poured, the family moved into the new home. The house was far from finished but it was easier to find time to work on it when living at the scene of action. During the months that followed, Marge hardly knew what it was to have a paint brush out of her hand. Bob found the finish work to be very exacting and had to go slowly until he could buy the proper tools to do the various jobs. Money ordinarily set aside for recreation went into hardware, paint and miscellaneous building materials. It was hard work but by this time, the Kettler's home was their hobby and they knew what they wanted. Charm and beauty began The result is a neat green and white house surrounded by lawn and flowers. Visit the Kettlers today, and you will find country living at its best. The vegetable garden is planted and tender young seedlings peep up from a cold frame. The children frolic in the spacious yard with nine collie puppies. The interior of the house combines eye appeal with utility. Marge Kettler has all the cupboard and closet space she has ever dreamed of. There is space to store the vacuum cleaner, fruit jars, rainwear and even last year's gladiola bulbs! Cooking is a pleasure in this red and white kitchen with its accents of fresh green ivy. The kitchen unit includes dining space and a conveniently placed laundry room. This kitchen, often the hub of family living, can also be opened to the living room by means of a sliding panel at the breakfast bar. Fluorescent lighting is used throughout. The house that Bob built is a source of great satisfaction to the Kettlers. Further plans call for finishing the garden house so that it can be used for square dancing and barbecues, and an enclosed patio. Moisture Causes Molds in Houses Sources of excess moisture within homes should be eliminated if possible. One such source is open gas flames used for heating. Much water is liberated during the combustion of natural gas and, unless it is disposed of through flues or other ventilating mechanisms, it will condense on cooler surfaces and encourage molds to grow.
