Anaheim almost was "Anagati." RECORD—John S. Hittle, one of the original Attaleemers, was the colony's first historian. He recorded many of the events that made Anaheim history. He wrote: "Anaheim will never have a foreign character where the English language is unknown. None of the Analeemers came directly from Germany, all of them lived with and among Americans and most of them speak English fluently. The English language is the predominant tongue, although German will long be cherished." LANGUAGE—In 1876 W. E. Olson stated that the population of Anaheim was no longer German, but was principally American. ENVIRONMENT — Minutes of the Anaheim Water Co. were written in the Old German script in 1871. Distrieth Strodhoff kept the authentic record of the water company ... Incidentally, the Colonists knew little or nothing about irrigation but learned all they needed to know from the Mexicans and Indians ... Old maps at the Huntington library show that Juan Jacilio Onteveras had a garden just east of Anaheim ... The main irrigation ditch to the colony must have paralleled the old ranchero's ditch ... Historical records also documents indicate that the colonists built their homes out of adobe, because wood was too expensive. Adobe came from a site where the Dreyfus Winery was later built ... BUSINESS—Langenberger, the pioneer merchant, built a two-story building where the J. C. Penney store now is ... The Dreyfus Winery was later built ... 4-H Week Set For March 3-11 March 3-11 has been set aside as National 4-H club week, recently announced Anne Girod, home advisor in charge of Orange county 4-H club work. All over the world the 4-H members will present its theme, "Working Together for World Understanding." According to Miss Girod, 4-H accomplishments set a new high record with nearly two million young people enrolled in 4-H club work. Orange county 4-H members are in different projects which teach them to gain a better understanding of their responsibilities in the world today. In 1950 some 100 voluntary local leaders directed the 4-H club program in Orange county. Over 500 rural boys and girls completed projects in agriculture and home economics. A well-rounded program is set up for the youth with projects in home gardens, forestry, farm management, livestock, tractor maintenance, electricity, food preparation and preservation, clothing, home furnishing and junior leadership. The 4-H program is under the direction of the Agricultural Extension service, 1104 W. Eighth Santa Ana. BOYS WITH PLANES STRATFORD, Ont. The Dreyfuss Winery was built in 1885 at the height of the Colony's prosperity as a vineyard... After vineyards disappeared from the Anaheim scene, the Washington navel orange and English walnuts were grown. In 1889, 100 carloads of oranges were shipped from Anaheim... TOWNSITE — George Hansen surveyed Osteveras' rancho. He was an interesting character and a book might easily have been written about his exploits and endeavors... He had to lay out the Colony in such a way to facilitate the flow of water rather than by the cardinal points of the compass... The main irrigation ditch entered the colony at Sycamore on East street. A secondary ditch came in near Santa Ana street... Although Anaheim had fabulous beginnings, it wasn't smooth sailing for all the Colonists, because musty old issues of the Los Angeles Star carried notices of tax sales of the lots of Himmelmann, Jamysky, Welder and Stopendeck for delinquent taxes. That was in 1880... NITECAP—Most fellows who feel sorry for themselves don't know how well off they really are. Some Easter Seal Letters Missent If any Anaheim residents received Easter Seal appeal letters signed by the Sacramento County Society for Crippled Children rather than one signed by the Orange County society, it was due to an error, Mrs. Edward J. Power, campaign chairman for Anaheim explained today. Although each county society writes its own letter to accompany the seals, printing details are handled by state headquarters in San Francisco, she said. In its shipment of appeal letters the local society received an undetermined number printed for the Sacramento county organization. The error was not detected until after the local organization's Easter Seal letters were in the mail. Anyone receiving a Sacramento county letter and wishing to make a contribution should make available to the Orange County for Crippled Children at Shenandoah Grove blvd., Garden Mrs. Powers said. Progress Made In Junior Play In spite of bothersome complications which have beset rehearsals for the Junior Play, "Not in a Thousand Years," it can now be said that things are running along fairly smooth. The entire cast is now rehearsing at night and after school in the high school auditorium under the directorship of Miss Louise Hitt, drama teacher and director of "Not in a Thousand Years." Changes which have been made in the cast include Fernando Ramos taking the place of Stu Schmid and Dick Williams replacing Ira Webber. Another replacement in the play is Dixie Lee Hopkins for Joan Hendricson. Those having leads in the play are Mary Jo Duncan as Jeannie, play because of two boys who are always fighting over her and Jerry Farrow as junior who thinks he has a black star following him around all the time, since things are always happening to him, who has trouble during the whole. No adequate explanation has been found for the annual migration of birds and animals.
