Rapp Is Second Ace Carrier Boy
Probably no one would insist that musical talent is necessary to success in a business career, but Donald Rapp, 11, is proof positive that it doesn't hinder it.
Donald is the second boy to achieve the title "Ace" in the Gazette's carrier-boy competition. Last week he turned up a score of 575 in the Gazette's carrier rating system, which requires 500 points for the "ace" rating. Today his score is well over 600. New subscriptions and good service to customers are the primary points—winners for the boys.
Donald's principal extra-curricular activity—he's a Horace Mann school Sixth grader—is musical. He plays trumpet in a neighborhood band which includes two other trumpets, two violins and a flute. Under the tutelage of the Fremont school music director, the boys study music every Friday.
Donald hasn't made any definite plans for his future, but he does know that they will include some college education and there will be music. In fact, he hopes some day to make his living with music.

rates may forego some spring training chores today for a newsreel camera stint.
Aside from a couple of special cases for the trainer and the usual stiff arms, legs and the flu bug, the Bucs training session is progressing satisfactorily.
Four players and a coach missed part of the workouts yesterday.
Ralph Kiner, the major league home run king, had two teeth extracted. Pitchers Jim Walsh and Bob Friend complained of bruises from line drives. Outfielder Tom Saffell reported a headache after bumping into a fence. The flu put Coach Bill Posedel on the shelf.
PHOENIX—Catcher Yogi Berra, who came to terms with the New York Yankees only a week ago, is slated for a premature workout behind the bat.
Manager Casey Stengel had planned to use Berra in the outfield—where he once played—in early limbering up sessions. But Charley Silvera, who was slated to handle the backstopping chores, is attending his grandmother's funeral in San Francisco. The first intra-squad game is set for today.
LAKELAND — The Detroit
Can Studebaker Beat Last Run?
With three 1951 Studebaker models entered in the 1951 Mobilgas Economy run by Studebaker, the motorcar fraternity of the west is already speculating as to whether Studebaker can equal or excel its striking showing of last year.
So says Leavitt Ford, Anaheim Studebaker dealer, who points out that two of last year's victorious drivers will again be at the Studebaker wheels. Vic Del Como will drive the Champion in the run. Del Como, piloting last year's Champion, registered the highest economy—26.551 miles per gallon.
Another repeat driver this year is Bill Helmberger who again drives the Land Cruiser. It will be recalled that Helmberger won in his class last year.
The Commander this year, it is announced, is driven by Stanley Van Horn. Van Horn last year was relief driver for Helmberger.
This year's run, with 35 cars entered—including most major makes—takes place today and tomorrow. The start was at 3 a.m., today from the General Petroleum garage in Downtown Los Angeles. Drivers must make the run within 20 hours and 55 minutes two other drummers, two violins and a flute. Under the tutelage of the Premont school music director, the boys study music every Friday.
Donald hasn't made any definite plans for his future, but he does know that they will include some college education and there will be music. In fact, he hopes some day to make his living with music.
Music being a mathematical sort of thing—if you don't believe it, ask a music instructor—Donald would seem to be taking the right approach to it. He likes mathematics in school. He's a rather serious-minded youngster, preferring to work after school even though it does keep him from participating in school athletics, which he likes.
His favorite sport is baseball and he would rather pitch than play any other position. He's an occasional movie-goer, but handles his shows. "Comical" movies of the Abbott and Costello type are his favorites.
He lives with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Rapp, and his brothers, Douglas, 14 and Diane, 9, at 809 N. Palm st. His father, custodian and bus driver at Katella school, came to California from South Dakota, where Donald was born in 1943.
COST OF LIVING
HITS CHURCHES
VANCOUVER (F)—The cost of living is hitting the churches like everything else. H. L. Hutton, chairman of the stewards committee of St. Andrews-Wesley church here, said higher street-car fares may be keeping suburban members from supporting the downtown church.
Exchange is the agency in Anaheim for several other makes of sewing machines besides the Adler. Any type of sewing machine can be rebuilt or repaired here and free pick-up and delivery service is offered.

LAKELAND — The Detroit Tigers are rapping the fences in batting drill. Among those pleasing Manager Red Rolfe is an import from Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League, Steve Souchock. Souchock is being groomed as a right-handed pinch hitter.
Musick, Brown Discuss Gambling
Sheriff James Musick was in Los Angeles today attending a conference with Attorney General Edmund Brown with respect to procedure, contemplated in suppressing alleged gambling activities at the Airport club in Seal Beach.
Despite a recent ruling by the attorney general that the Airport club is in violation of state law with the games its conducts, the club continues to operate. A recent raid by the sheriff's office resulting in the arrest and trial of eight club employees proved fruitless when Justice Elmer Hughes of Seal Beach granted a dismissal of the charges.
WILMINGTON (Ut) — Citizens were agog when fireman deliberately burned down a row of houses. They were making a training film showing fire fighting techniques and the houses, on city-owned property, had been condemned.
The Commander this year, it is announced, is driven by Stanley Van Horn. Van Horn last year was relief driver for Helmberger.

Drivers must make the run within 20 hours and 65 minutes. It ends tomorrow afternoon at the Grand Canyon South rim.

You know, it is almost miraculous the things that a modern sewing machine will do. I watched Pat Reader, owner of the Exchange give a demonstration on the new Adler today.
It was fascinating to watch him use the machine to over-cast a tea towel, a trick that eliminates hand hemming. By pressing a small lever, he spelled his name in yellow thread and in the same manner fashioned several clever designs suitable for a bouse front or baby's rompers.
A button hole came next, made entirely by machine and locked at the points of stress so that I knew it would stand the roughest use although it looked saintly and pretty when finished.
The Adler sewing machine sews on buttons, darns, ruffles and hemstitches. It will sew right over pins and so eliminates the necessity of basting. And the Adler does all these things without the need for additional attachments.
