Pettit is the player the Bucs signed for $100,000 and who did only fair last season with New Orleans of the Southern Association. Dempsey came to the Bucs from San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League and the Bucs have 30 days after the season opens to decide whether to keep him.
BURBANK—It looks like the St. Louis Browns—and baseball—will have to do without Frank Saucier, one of the game's most promising rookies.
He's a successful oilman working out of Ogmulgee, Okla., and isn't interested in the $5000 offered him by the Browns.
Saucier, batting star of the Texas League last year, made his position known yesterday in a telephone conversation with Bill DeWitt, Brownie president. DeWitt, in St. Louis, promptly announced to his subordinates, supervising spring training here, that he would make no more overtures to Saucier.
The 23-year-old left-hander hit .343 for San Antonio last year.

an old man with a hat on, and the only thing worse than a man with an old hat on is another woman driver." Oh well, silly questions deserve silly answers.
Slow Start
Things didn't look too bright at the beginning of the season for the team but with the coming of conference games, the ball started rolling and there was no stopping the Hornet five, not even in the playoffs at Compton when they brought in a 65-64 win over Glendale's Vaqueros. Although FJC'ers are proud of the team, proudest of all is Pappy Omalev, hard-work ing coach and advisor to the champs.
Evangelistic Service Crowds Swelled by Servicemen Groups
Crowds at the weekend meetings of the Orange County for Christ Crusade were swelled by a more than lively sprinkling of servicemen as military bases over the Southland answered the call of Lorin Grisot, servicemen's chief than for the affair.
Last week, after it was announced by a spokesman—the sponsoring groups that it felt Red elements in the crowd were exerting an organized effort to discourage crowds at the religious gatherings, servicemen gan to bolster the attendance one instance, a group of 13 from the San Diego Naval station called and asked to seats saved for them, and arrival, joined the choir under direction of Don DeVoss, a member of the evangelistic team coming out the meetings.
Griset also extended invitation to the personnel of El Toro M Corps Air Station to attend sessions and the week-end cwere speckled with an number of forest green uniflora.
Yesterday Dr. T. W. W evangelist and lifetime assoc of Billy Graham, now works the Los Angeles area, based sermon on "The Meanest M Orange County," declaring no matter what bad a man done and what evil deeds he perpetrated, no one can be as as the man "who realized that a God and refused to a him!"
Originally it was planned suspend the meeting tonight the Orange county Christian nessmen's groups, one of the soaring elements, was able to a color film, "Thirty-eighth Hallel," the last missionary fille made in Korea prior to present hostilities.
The film, which covers some events leading up to the rean war as well as the difficulty of mission work there, was fille by Dr. Robert Pierce, evam

Just a Line
Gerry Thatcher, ex-Hornet and Anaheimer, wrote a letter to one of the JC instructors recently summing up life in the U.S. Navy. Both Thatcher and Warren Pee, another FJC student entered the Navy January 8 as music recruits and are now stationed in San Diego where they are attending boot camp.
News Flashes
New Orleans at the Mardi Gras season will be seen Friday when the freshmen present their annual assembly. Thursday night will present an opportunity to cure boredom when the Kappa Lambda Sigma sorority sponsors another of the fabulous playrights. Last but not least in the week's lineup of events will be the Saint Patrick's dance to be held in the gym March 9. Bill Birchit and his five bits of rhythm will provide music for all the Shamrock Shufflers.
HONESTY WINS SUSPENSION
BAKERSFIELD (EP)—The judge suspended hunter Pete Olivetti's 90-day jail sentence for shooting an illegal spike buck "in view of your honesty."
Olivetti turned himself in to game wardens and pleaded guilty. His excuse: "The deer turned its head in such a way that the spikes formed a fork. I thought it was a legal animal."
