Truman Requests
2-cent Post Card
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Truman today asked Congress to double postal rates on second-class mail and increase from one to two cents the cost of carrying a postal card.
These were among the recommendations made in a message aimed at wiping out the bulk of the present postal deficit, which should not be borne by the general taxpayer." He listed among his recommendations for eliminating the bulk of the deficit:
1. Raising the cost of post cards from one to two cents and laying first class mail rates unchanged.
2. On second-class mail rates: "If the rates are doubled—which is the least that should be done" the general taxpayer would still be "subsidizing second class mail to the extent of more than 60 per cent of its postal cost."
3. Mr. Truman said the minimum rate on circulations and advertising matter should be increased from one to two cents.

Schultz Grew from One Machine To Vital Industry in Seven Years
By LEONARD KREIDT
One of Anaheim's small industries which will become very important under the latest defense production setup is the Schultz Tool and Machine Manufacturing Co., located at 95 E. La Palma st.
The Schultz company had its beginnings in Orange in 1944, when Oscar Schultz owner and manager, set up a shop with one screw machine. Three years later, according to Schultz, the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce and the city government made a move to this city so attractive that he packed up his shop and moved in 1947.
Today Schultz's machines are omitted into a large quonset hut on the northeast edge of Anaheim, steel and sheet metal are on the site, ready to become a large addition to the present works.
From a single screw machine, the shop has grown to the point where it now produces aircraft component parts, oil drilling andinery parts, precision marked delials for all types of instrument panels and other equipment, and hydraulic actuator cylinder valves accurate to within 1/200,000 of an inch.
One of the products turned out by this shop which Schultz exits with pride is a fully automatic mechanical telegraph key. Some-plated and shiny, the instrument is not only beautiful, but is practical to an extreme deepe.
You can drop this key in salt water, leave it there for days, pick it out, dry it off and go ahead and use it." Schultz extended. "Electronic keys are made they are a marvel of ingenuity speed, but they lack the rugness of one of these instruments."
35. Schultz has had 25 years of mechanical and machine tool experience. He was 10 when he began scraping babbitt metal in motor bearings for an outfit in Madison, Wis. That humble beginning led to further work as a mechanic and eventually led to his first machine shop job in 1934.
Schultz has nothing but praise for Anaheim's constant wooing of industrial concerns:
"Exidently the City of Anaheim and its Chamber of Commerce realize something that has been missed by some other Orange county cities—that non-seasonal industries are necessary as a stable base for prosperity; that the seasonal citrus industry is not sufficient to insure a steady market for the goods and services of Anaheim businessmen," he explained.
"Due largely to the foresight and effort of city officials and the town's booster organization, Anaheim is in a position to land far more than its share of war production work," he continued, "and the result will be increased prosperity for its citizens during a time when living costs will be higher."
Mrs. Lucas' topic is, "The Quality of Greatness." Her thesis is that our history is actually the biography of great men. She will discuss the attributes of the world's outstanding men and women — and what made them great personalities. After the lecture she will answer questions from the platform.

bly had approved earlier, 29 to 12.
At least two other states were also near ratification votes—Minnesota and Maryland. The Minnesota legislature had suspended the rules to schedule a vote this afternoon in the hope of becoming the 38th and deciding state to act.
The amendment has been before the states since March, 1947.
After an initial spurt of ratification votes, interest in the proposal apparently lagged and only 24 states had acted favorably by the start of this year.
Redlands Oranges Estimate Higher
REDLANDS UP- This season's shipments of navel oranges from the Redlands district probably will be higher than early estimates.
Growers said the shipments may reach 3200 cars, or about 65 per cent of last year's figure. Early estimates were for about 60 per cent.

Gas Taxes Not Deductible, Warns Club
California motorbists were reminded today that they may not deduct sums paid for state gasoline taxes in filing 1950 federal income tax returns.
The Automobile club of Southern California issues this warning in reminding a roundup of allowable deductions affecting owners of motor vehicles in this state.
Retail sales taxes paid on such purchases as automobiles and accessories are deductible, the club points out. State gasoline taxes are not classified in this category in that such taxes are considered levied upon the producer, not the consumer.
Amounts paid during the year as registration fees, vehicle license taxes, operator and chauffeur license fees and personal property and municipal taxes may also be reported, the club said.
Other deductible items include sums paid as interest on auto loans or for losses or damages to taxpayer's vehicles, not compensated for by insurance adjustments.
All automotive deductions must be reported on Form 1040 (long form), it was point out.
In computing adjusted gross income, motorists are entitled to deduct all maintenance, depreciation and insurance costs for vehicles used entirely for business.
Moreover, travel expenses such as lodging, meals and transportation may also be reported when vehicles are used on overnight business trips, the club said.
When _cars_ are used both for business and pleasure, a proportionate share of these expenses, based on business use only, may be allowed.
Attorneys Mum on Collazo’s Strategy
WASHINGTON (UP) — Oscar Collazo’s attorneys indicated today they will conceal as long as they can the strategy by which they hope to save the little Puerto Rican from the electric chair for his part in the plot to shoot President Truman.
As government prosecutors prepared to outline their case to a federal court jury, Collazo’s court-appointed lawyers told reporters they do not plan to make any opening statement.
Ordinarily—but not always—the defense outlines its case immediately after the prosecution finishes.
Collazo is being tried for first-degree murder for his part in the Nov. 1 attempt to assassinate Mr. Truman.
The first day of the trial yesterday was devoted entirely to the selection of a jury.
After 166 prospective jurors had been eliminated for various reasons, 10 women and two men were finally seated. Two alternates were selected. They will listen to the evidence, but will not take part in deliberations unless called upon to replace regular jurors for any reason.
The jury is composed of seven housewives, a waitress, a saleswoman, a woman administrative assistant for a telephone company, a janitor and a carpenter.
