Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path. — Psalm 119:105-112. ROUND TOWN—Earl (Dyna) Curtis learned the citrus game from the ground up only to have the Anaheim Citrus Ass'n merge with Jack Prizer's Placentia Orange Growers. With the same determination, he is learning the transportation game now ... Incidentally, Dyna's brother, Mel Curtis, is dairying in Idaho now. He was a well-known automobile parts distributor hereabouts ... Clarence Houser has become a small-scale butter-and-egg man. He has a cow and a dozen chickens to supply his table needs ... Howard Spencer, the pioneer Orangethorper, doesn't think it will be necessary to build a backyard bomb shelter. "Why? Would they waste a bomb to blow up a lot of orange trees?" ... Really that's hard to say; but Vern Talbott believes Anaheimers are the nicest people to do business with. He gave out a lot of checks hereabouts for oil leases ... ANAHEIM ITEMS—Ina Pickard turned in a 523 bowling score last week. CAPT. BOB HALL (Recalled to Service) Hall Recalled As Army Capt. Bob Hall, Anaheim insurance agent, has been called back into the U.S. Armed Forces and will leave tomorrow for Camp Chaffee, Ark., where he will join his assigned outfit, the Fifth Armored Division. Hall, a reserve captain, has lived in Anaheim the past four years at 525 N. Bush st. For three years he was connected with the A. P. M. Brown Insurance agency, then operated his own agency for the past year. His wife, Joan, and two children, Susan, 4, and Sally, 2, ANAHEIMITEMS—Ina Pickard turned in a 523 bowling score last week. That's mighty good bowling! Henry Del Glorio carded an even 600 in Santa Ana league play. that's knocking 'em down faster than the pinboy can put 'em up. Joe Martin is a leetle beet disappointed. Ideal Southern California weather made the winter sports prospects poor. It'll be another month or so before they'll play ball at La Palma park. Over at Fullerton Den Stewart and his aides Jackie Warner are ready. They've even got a college athletic manager to ask P.K. Wrigley for talent. Maybe Stan Hack will get what Big Bill Kelly didn't—ballplayers. Incidentally, it seems that there are a lot of baseball players like Bobby Sturgeon, instance who play a lot more golf than baseball. Before shoving off for Florida, Bobby Ross, the Schatzors righthanded, left handed pitcher said: "If I had Skeets Gregg's size, I'd really be able to mow 'em down." Del Crandall is in Florida for a "vacation" since the draftboard has signified that his number is up. RIGHTO—Alex Bernal will tell you that the Washington Monument was dedicated Feb. 21, 1855. He's one truckdriver who knows history. AUCTION — Harry Crump Is one of the lads who regularly participates in the auctions at the Cypress yard. He has the distinction of being one of the Southland's leading judges of livestock. Ross (Pop) Warner whose claim to fame isn't the fact that he sold a lot of orange groves around Anaheim; but that, through selective breeding, has developed canaries of all shades of the rainbow, also attends the sales. The jovial, good natured Brean must-a picked up a lot of his $5000 mustache cup collect- PGA Mexico Act Becomes Serene HOUSTON (AP)—All was serene today among the hitherto warring professional golfers and the Houston Open will go on with Jimmie Demaret and other players penalized for a defiant trip to Mexico swinging their clubs as usual. An agreement was reached last night with Lawson Little, PGA tournament committee co-chair- the Cypress yard. He has the distinction of being one of the Southland's leading judges of livestock... Ross (Pop) Warner whose claim to fame isn't the fact that he sold a lot of orange groves around Anaheim; but that, through selective breeding, has developed canaries of all shades of the rainbow, also attends the sales. The jovial, good natured Brean must-a picked up a lot of his $5000 mustache cup collection at the sales... "Hopalong" Cassidy—if he's got another name, no one else knows it—also is a well-known buyer-and-seller at the auctions... Roy Rhodes, the Buena Park cowpoke, is a lover of good hoss flesh. You'll see him under his 10-gallon sombrero at the auction or at the "two buck show window" at Santy Anita... Another personable chap you'll find at the auction yard is Denver Garner. At one time he even was the poor man's Speed Rigge. Garner has a quarterhoss for sale. He claim's the filly "will run a hole in the wind."... Rue Bohannon will have to see that to believe it... Which reminds me, that Wilson Phelps and Art Shipkey's Anaton self service station is open for the hep-y self trade. NITECAPE—Hell hath no fury like a woman in a fender bender. CZECHS SPEED INDUSTRIAL TRAINING PRAGUE (F) — Czechoslovakia is speeding up apprentice training to help overcome a manpower shortage. Apprentices have been serving as much as three years before becoming full-fledged workers. This term is to be cut to two years in some big industries; to one year in other fields and even to six months in still others. Women also are being encouraged to go to work. BANK OF AMERICA DECLARES DIVIDEND Directors of Bank of America have declared a regular cash dividend for the current semiannual period, payable in two quarterly instalments, at the annual rate of $1.60 per share.
