For Results and Quick 7 Anaheim Gazette WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA LIU Quits (Continued from Page 2) Albany and Democrats pledged their support. The mushrooming scandal continued to bring statements from some major schools that they will not play further games in Madison Square Garden. The latest was from Denver university, which lost an allegedly "fixed" game to LIU two months ago. Other schools said they will continue to play in the Garden. Gard was the eighth and latest to be brought into the current scandal as a player. He previously was charged as the contact between the CCNY players and Sallazzo. But late yesterday the district attorney's office said Gard also admitted accepting bribes to "fix" three games in which he played last season. One was LIU's 80-52 invitational tournament upset loss to Syracuse. Gard's athletic eligibility ran out on him this season, although he was still enrolled at LIU. However, three of his former mates—White, Smith and Bigos—are charged with carrying on the "dumping" this season. Authorities said Smith was not involved last year. Trigo Earns Nod SAN ANTONIO, Tex., (P) — Mario Trigo, four-ranking lightweight challenger from Monterey, won a 10-round split decision here last night over third ranking Rudy Cruz of Los Angeles. Cruz weighed 138, Trigo 136. The bout was first announced as a draw, but a recount of the scorecards showed a narrow win for Trigo. Association, embracing 91 institutions, decided to discuss an overall ban on summer resort basketball at the organization's spring meeting. A resolution was introduced in the city council which would authorize a committee investigation to determine the advisability of barring oil city colleges in high schools from engaging in off-the-campus basketball. The resolution obviously was aimed at Madison Square Garden where the allegedly fixed games were played. Classified Rates for Anaheim Gazette "fix" three games in which he played last season. Bigos had replaced Gard as captain this year. White, one of the nation's highest scorers, appeared headed for All-American honors. Bigos, White and Smith posted $15,000 bail each and were released late yesterday. Gard remained in protective custody at his own request. The Sollazzo scandal was touched off Sunday with the arrest of Roman, Warner, Roth and Schaff. Hogan said the seeds of the fix plot were sown at a Catskill resort hotel where Sollazzo met Gard. A resort hotel league operating in the area each summer draws many of the nation's top cage stars. Sollazzo sold Gard on the scheme to make some "easy money," Hogan said. Gard, in turn, finally drew Bigos, White and then Smith into the operation. In a statement after the arrest of the school's three stars, LIU President Metcalfe said the university henceforth would not permit its players to play in the resort league. His statement was made before LIU trustees banned all intercollegiate sports. Other developments that broke in rapid-fire order after the scandal was uncovered included: A pledge by Mayor Vincent R. Impellitterl that he would take any action within the powers of his office to stamp out bribery practices. The Eastern Collegiate Athletic LEGAL NOTICES (Pub.
