Colonists in League, Home In Quest For Sunset Loop
Victory Over Panthers, Newport Loss Required to Push Anaheim to Crown
Though they close their season's schedule against Orange here tonight, the Anaheim Colonists will probably have one eye on the only other Sunset league game when they set out in quest of a possible clean claim to the loop title.
Currently tied with Newport Harbor for the title, the Colonists can get that clean claim only with a combination of a win by them and a loss by the Sailors to Huntington Beach. The latter is not a great improbability, either, for the Ollers have been one of the hottest squads in the league during the second round, and have now racked up three straight victories since barely losing to the Colonists.
Odds, if there are any, will certainly favor the Colonists. Possessing a 23-4 record, now embracing five straight wins, they are bowing out on their home court against a team that has been able to win but one league game this year.
The Panthers, though stubborn through the early stages of the contest, were whipped handily by the Colonists, 54-36, in their first meeting this year.
Should victories fall where they are expected, however, to put Newport and Anaheim in a final first-place tie, that would be just what it is—a first-place tie. There apparently will be no first place playoff for the title such as was held in the Orange league.
The Colonists and Sailors would be crowned co-champs and would flip a coin merely to determine who their first-round opponents would be in the CIF playoffs. The Sunset league, it seems, does not officially recognize a champion, thus thwarting a playoff. Anaheim and Santa Ana, tied for the title last year, are listed officially as co-champions although the Saints did win a playoff. The playoff, however, was only to determine a representative for this league in the CIF tournament.
Since CIF rulings have been changed this year to allow the first two finishers in each league to participate in the playoffs, it will not be necessary to determine a representative in that manner again.

First-round CIF foes were determined for the Sunset league last night when Grossmont defeated La Jolla 46-45 in a San Diego league game. San Diego, which won its league, will face the "second-place" Sunset league team, while the "first-place" Sunset team will oppose Grossmont.
The Anaheim Bees, meanwhile, will be going for a clear-cut victory claim in their division of the Sunset loop when they face Orange in the 7 o'clock curtain raiser. Possessing an 8-1 record in league play, they are one game up on Huntington Beach and thus cannot finish worse than in a top-spot deadlock.
The Oilers should puiverize Newport in their game at the beach, but the Colonist Bees may find some trouble in overcoming Orange tonight. They were forced into an overtime and had to overcome a four-point deficit in that

Grape, Bevins Top Colonist Scoring
Sheldon Welch and Ronnie Bevins held virtual strangleholds on practically every department except fouling on their respective teams today, according to unofficial statistics compiled by the Gazette.
Welch was the leader in four of the five varsity departments, running just ahead of teammate Ron Faulkner in all of them. Faulkner captured the fifth category, having committed 73 fouls to lead the team in that Ira Webber was second with 70.
The same held true of Bevins with the Bees, except that he was far ahead of any other member of the team in every department. Augie Huesca turned out to be the most prolific fouler with 68.
An interesting item tucked away among the columns is the fact that Welch, though undoubtedly playing more time than any other team member, is far behind in the matter of fouling. Faulkner, playing less time, has committed almost twice as many fouls as Welch.
Playing in 26 of his team's 27 games, the Grape has now been called only 37 times, an amazing average of only 1.43 fouls per Nettles, Babcock In Race to Wire
Besides the try for the loop title, a race for the scoring leadership in the Sunset League will be in evidence when Huntington Beach invades Newport tonight.
Newport's Armand Nettles, one point up on Santa Ana's Rex Babcock after last Tuesday, needs 16 points to cop the crown this year. That was the amount made by Babcock in last night's game with Fullerton.
It is strictly a two-man race. No. 3 scorer Glen Griffith of Newport being 20 points behind the leader going into the game. He seemed to be safe there, however, holding a 16-point advantage over Sheldon Welch and Don Faulkner, the two Colonists fled for fourth.
From there on down it was pretty close. The top dozen in scoring (does not include last night's scoring):
Nettles, Newport
Babcock, Santa Ana
Griffith, Newport
Welch, Anaheim
Faulkner, Anaheim
Schurch, Huntington Beach
Pennington, Fullerton
Omah, Huntington Beach
Bharau, Gwynne
Senseu, Huntington Beach
Peterrou, Newport
Webber, Anaheim

He and his manager, Gainford, immediately said wanted more of the same Joey Maxim, light heavyweight champ.

This didn't jibe with the timing of spokesmen for both New York and Illinois Athletics Commissions. They insisted Sugar Ray automatically abdicated welter king when his hand raised above the stricken Lakota after 13 bruising rounds in Chicago stadium.
A return match for the mid-weight championship between Robinson and LaMotta is doful. But he has a contractual rn to fight for the title within Louis Rates E

SC, Oregon Look To Protect Leads
LOS ANGELES (P)—The Pacific Coast conference's split basketball season has three more weekends to go with Southern California and Oregon currently leading their respective Southern and Northern divisions.
The SC Trojans have five conference wins and one loss and need to win four more to clinch the division title as they go against California at Berkeley tonight and tomorrow night. The Trojan all-game record this season is 18 victories and two defeats.
The UCLA Bruins, meeting Stanford here tonight and tomorrow night, are running second with a 3-3 conference record. California and Stanford each have won two and lost four.
Last weekend SC trimmed Stanford twice while California was splitting with UCLA.

Coaltown to Try Anita Comeback
ARCADIA (P)—The magic name of Coaltown comes back, to the turf tomorrow as the sentimental, if not the logical, favorite in the $50,000 San Antonio Handicap at Santa Anita park.
Leading eligibles for the $100,-000 Santa Anita Handicap March, are slated to go postward in the mile and one-eighth fixture tomorrow, including such strong threats as Coaltown's stablemate, Ponder; Alfred G. Vanderbilt's Next Move, I. J. Collins' Vulcan's Forge, the King-Luellwitz Stable's Moonrush, William Goetz' Australian champion, Bernbrook and others.
The San Antonio is the final major stepping stone pointing toward the March 3 classic and this year for the first time takes on added significance because of the weight issue.
The big 'Cap weights formerly were assigned in December, months before the actual running. But this year they will be announced Feb.21, giving the racing secretary an opportunity to measure their ability on a current basis.
Coaltown and Ponder drew top weight of 126 pounds for the San Antonio.

The Brown Bomber and he wasn't pulling very tinguished boxing career and cided that title holder Charles only No.6 in a lengthy list of opponents.
Ol' Joe, who will be at No.7 May and is fighting his way to another championship match with Charles, picked Billy Conn as best of all those who have finished him.
"No doubt about it," that Bowie was the best. He was winning a title right away from me when he managed to get to him. He could box and he had a good punch," Louis said.
The ex-champ was referring their '1947 meeting when clenger Conn was well ahead points but made the mistake trying to sing with Joe in the round. Louis kayed Conn again in '1946, this time in eight sessions.
Behind Conn, the man wore the crown from June. Until he retired in March, he rated the best men to face him follows:

No.3—James J. Braddock
No.4—Max Schmoling

Sugar Ray, Claiming Two Fight Titles,
Now Wants Shot at Light-Heavy Crown
CHICAGO (P) — Sugar Ray Robinson would like to stack the heavyweight boxing crown top of two others he claims to own.
Robinson, welterweight champion since late in 1946, blasted the LaMotta out from under the middleweight championship Wednesday night and inherited LaMotta's title.
He and his manager, George Knopf, immediately said they rated more of the same from Maxim, light heavyweight champ.
They also declared that Robinson still held his welterweight championship.
This didn't lobe with the think-of spokesmen for both the York and Illinois Athleticmissions. They insisted Sugar Ray automatically abdicated as king when his hand was ad above the stricken LaMotte after 13 bruising rounds in theicago stadium.
Return match for the middleweight championship between Robinson and LaMotta is doubtful. But he has a contractual right for the title within 90 days. LaMotta complained that making the 160-pound weight for the match with Sugar Ray had weakened him. Observers are convinced he has outgrown the middleweight division.
Jim Norris, president of the International Boxing club which sponsored Wednesday night's fight, said "It's unfair to make Jake make the weight."
Al Weill, IBC matchmaker, indicated a LaMotta-Maxim fight was in the works. Jake didn't reveal his own plans. If any, He left yesterday for New York, where he probably will talk with Norris about future fights.
Norris said yesterday: "I'd like to put him (LaMotta) in with Maxim."
That is precisely what manager Gainford would like to do with Sugar Ray. Gainford said:
"Sure we'd like to fight Maxim. It's, the big money match. We've been after him for a year. There's a chance of our fighting Maxim this summer."
Thus, Robinson suffering growing pains in the welterweight division, and the vaquished LaMotta, finding the 160 - pound weight strictures a definite liability, both are gazing upward covetously at tough Maxim.
Aware of this, Joey himself was looking up and beyond—toward the crown of heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles.
Both Joey and his manager, Jack Kearns, expressed willingness for Maxim to meet either Robinson or LaMotta. If the Charles fight, which Kearns said has been promised him for June, doesn't go through.

Louis Rates Ezzard as Sixth Best Among Opponents Faced in Career
SAN FRANCISCO (P)—Old Joe Louis, who ruled the heavyweight ranks longest of 'em all, rates Ezzard Charles, event champion and the one who beat him in his comeback attempt, as only the sixth best man he ever fought.
The Brown Bomber never pulled a punch in the ring; he wasn't pulling verbal ones as he mulled over a disguised boxing career and decided that title holder Charles was No. 6 in a lengthy list of opnits.
Joe, who will be 37 come and is fighting his way into other championship match with les, picked Billy Conn as the of all those who have faced doubt about it, that Billy the best. He was winning that right away from me when I urged to get to him. He sure box and he had a good chin," Louis said.
Ex-champ was referring to 1941 meeting when chal-er Conn was well ahead on but made the mistake of slugging with Joe in the 13th L. Louis kayoed Conn again 46, this time in eight sessions. Mind Conn, the man who the crown from June, 1937, he retired in March, 1949, the best men to face him asvs:
2—Max Baer
3—James J. Braddock
4—Max Schmoling
5—Tommy Farr
6—Ezzard Charles
7—Primo Carnera
8—Jersey Joe Walcott
9—Bob Pastor
10—Arturo Godoy
His turn philosophical now, concerned whether Charles apps a slow burn in tempera-over the somewhat lowly rat-he thinks he stands a good chance to beat Ezzard the next time, if and when they meet fairly soon. "Especially if I can catch up with him early," he said.
