Turks to 'Copters Handled in Marine Air Freight Depot
ITAMI, Japan — Through the portals of the First Marine Air Wing's air freight and passenger service from Sept. 20 to Jan. 1 flowed more than five million pounds of equipment, supplies and personnel—all in aerial transit to and from Korean battle fronts.
In this period, the air freight section headed by Captain Robert Q. J. Bekins, Jr., of Dallas, Tex., and whose personnel includes M/Sgt. H. G. Buck of 9552 Valdina st. Anaheim, has handled shipments that included:
Turkish infantrymen, six complete helicopters, the Secretary of the Navy, jeeps, sleeping bags, casualties, rations, ammunition and badly needed cold weather uniforms.
There is hardly a representative of any of the United Nations fighting units in action in Korea that hasn't "checked in" as a passenger through the office.
Besides Marine transports, the air freight and passenger office has scheduled cargo and personnel shipments on military planes of the Navy, Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The total grand weight processed was 52,204,007 pounds. This includes 2,630,332 pounds of cargo; 5843 passengers that total 1,622,050 pounds; 4761 casualties from Korea and 673 casualties loaded for shipment to the States, a weight total of 951,625 pounds.
Loara District Defense Program
Nears Completion
Another rural area is completing its Civil Defense program. The newly appointed wardens under District Warden John A. Myers, and other officers of the Loara District will meet Thursday evening at 7:30 at the school to be briefed more fully in the activities of the Warden Service.
All appointees will be asked to register and take the Doyalt Oath. These will include the wardsens, auxiliary police and firemen under E. E. Heacock and Earl Miller, respectively, and those who will serve in the Aid Training program under the chairmanship of Wesley Visel.
An open meeting for all the residents of the district will be held in the near future.
Alfred A. Holve has been appointed permanent coordinator for the Loara Civil Defense District, replacing Ralph Dickenson who has been serving as temporary coordinator.
