25,000 Veterans Take Advantage Of State Aid
More than 25,000 veterans of World War II have taken advantage of the low-interest "Cal-Vet" farm and home financing plan, and another 153,000 have established their eligibility for future participation. It was reported today by State Director of Veterans Affairs D. J. Callaghan, Jr.
World War II veterans, to whom the Farm and Home Purchase program was opened in 1944, now outnumber the World War I veterans for whom it was originally established 29 years ago, Callaghan said. Approximately 20,000 of the older veterans have used the plan to acquire and maintain their own farms and homes at low financing cost.
New applications to establish eligibility for the "Cal-Vet" program are coming in at the rate of about 2000 a month, while only about 700 veterans a month are currently entering into contract for the purchase of property.
War Casualties Set at 38,325 By War Dept.
WASHINGTON (AP)—Announced U.S. casualties in the Korean war rose to 38,325 through midnight Dec. 22, an increase of 1904 over the cumulative total reported in the previous week.
The department of defense, in releasing the figures today, emphasized that they represent only the number of notifications sent to next of kin and do not reflect all casualties suffered through Dec. 22.
The total included 6432 deaths. Of these, 5742 were killed in action, 648 died of wounds and 6 deaths were recorded among men who had been reported missing in action.
The wounded total was 27,012, including those who later died of wounds.
The missing figure reached 5571 since the beginning of hostilities. Of this number 4753 are listed as unaccounted.

New applications to establish eligibility for the "Cal-Vet" program are coming in at the rate of about 2000 a month, while only about 700 veterans a month are currently entering into contract for the purchase of property.
"Many veterans," Callaghan explained, "want to have their eligibility on record while they are looking for a permanent home for their family. The certificates of eligibility which the Department of Veterans Affairs issues has no expiration date."
Eligibility and qualified veterans may be advanced up to $7500 on the purchase of a home or $13,-500 on a farm, provided the value of the property, as determined by Department of Veterans Affairs appraisal, does not exceed $10,000 in the case of a home or $15,000 in the case of a farm.
To be eligible, a veteran must have been born in California or must have been a resident of this state at the time he entered military service.
Information and eligibility application forms are available from offices of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Long Beach, Oakland, Fresno, San Jose, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino or Bakersfield, or from county veterans service officers or directors of community veterans service centers.

MAN OF YEAR
NEW YORK (UP) — “The U.S. fighting man” is Time Magazine’s “Man of the Year.”
The annual selection is reported in the Jan. 1 issue. The cover bears a portrait of a grim-faced soldier symbolic of all the U.S. Armed Forces.
This is the first time the weekly news magazine chose a symbol, rather than a specific individual, as the “Man of the Year.”
