Southern County Bank Increases Interest Rates
Southern County Bank is increasing the rate of interest paid on savings accounts to two percent compounded semi-annually effective Jan. 1, 1951, according to an announcement today by R. Poster Lamm, president.
It was also stated that the new rate will not only apply to all accounts now on the bank's books but also to all new accounts. Any deposits made on or before Jan. 10, 1951, will draw the new interest rate from Jan. 1, 1951. Accounts carried in the bank are insured to $10,000 by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
According to Mr. Lamm's statement this action is taken in line with the bank's policy of passing on to its customers any benefits consistent with the principles of sound banking.

Now the Eighth Army, including its British, South Korean and other units, is strung along the mountainous defensive terrain fronting the Parallel 38 border.
Would Hit Hard
Sharp valley and broken mountain terrain stretch along the border. Before the war erupted, both North and South Koreans maintained strong defensive positions there.
Military sources in Tokyo said Allied troops can command all approaches to South Korea. They said it was unlikely that any sizable force of Chinese or red Koreans could launch a southward drive without being hit hard.
The reds pushed their buildup of power in Central North Korea, springboard for the offensive which General MacArthur's headquarters has said for the past several days is imminent.
Allied troops Wednesday beat back light probing attacks northeast of Chunchon, in the center of the peninsula.
The Eighth Army reported Chinese reds massing north and northwest of Seoul, the South Korean capital.
Allied airplanes hammered at the communist gathering close behind
38. Fifth air force and British carrier-based warplanes joined the air attack.
South Korean troops methodically cut to pieces a North Korean regiment surrounded south of Chorwon, near the center of Parallel 38.
MacArthur said South Korean forces contained an enemy attack near Taedong which lasted for nearly an hour Tuesday. Some small ground gains were made by the communists but original positions were restored later.
MacArthur said a South Korean unit which had been srrounded Sunday northeast of Yongpo fought an all-night battle with the reds. By late afternoon Christmas day the South Korean unit broke through the enemy lines and joined other friendly forces in the area.
Another U. N. force attacked 400 reds in the same area but there was no report on the result.

While the eastern half of the country was cold, temperatures were around seasonal levels over the Far Western states. Colorado had freezing weather yesterday after a long mild spell but rising temperatures were forecast. Denver officials advised homeowners to water their lawns—lest they die of drought.
Parts of Idaho and Utah were blacked out last night after fog and sub-freezing temperatures combined to coat electric power lines with ice up to eight inches in thickness.
