Young Gl Becomes First Korean War Casualty to Lose Both Arms; Legs Travis Air Force Base, Calif., (AP)—Pfc Robert L. Smith, 20, of Middleburg, Pa., has arrived here as "a quadruple amputee" as a result of service in Korea, according to Col. A. H. Corliss, commanding officer of the air base hospital here. Colonel Corliss, in a statement to newsmen, said the young soldier was leaving by plane today for Walter Reed hospital, Washington, D. C. "His morale and condition are excellent," the hospital commander said. "His chances of rehabilitation are very good." The Colonel said young Smith telephoned his mother in Middleburg on Christmas eve, to exchange greetings. The hospital declined to say just how much of Smith's four limbs had been amputated. He is the first casualty of the Korean war to lose all four limbs. The field said that Smith's plane to Washington would make a non-stop flight. The departure time was withheld. Frank Smith, a neighbor who was present when the telegram was received, by his mother, said Mrs. Smith was "very calm" but "became confused after thinking it over." He added that the widowed mother of the wounded soldier refused to discuss the situation with reporters. "She was very calm," Smith said in describing the scene. "She just opened it and read it aloud." Bill Loftus, Harrisburg, Pa., Staffer, called the mother. When he told Mrs. Smith about her son she fainted. Loftus wrote "I nearly did" too. A neighbor picked up the telephone, obtained the rest of the information from Loftus. Mrs. Smith received a letter from her son on Nov. 27 written on Nov. 16 in which he complained that the weather was cold and he could not feel the gun in his hand. She received a telegram from Robert on Dec. 14 from Japan stating "I am in hospital. Anxiety unnecessary, loving wishes for Christmas." Subsequently she received two letters from nurses at the Japanese hospital stating that he "was unable to write at this time" and WALKER DEATH SCENE—The wreath day lies along roadside between den, is the truck involved in the col and Information Bureau Photo via Private Services Held Today for Lt. Senate Holds 24-Second Session, But Misses Record of May 29 WASHINGTON (AP)—The Senate, with nothing but time on its hands, held a 24-second session today. The House met for seven minutes but did nothing. The four senators who showed up for the Senate session were meeting under a unanimous agreement to transact no business and indulge in no debate. Senator McKellar (D-Tenn), in the presiding officer's chair, called the three others to order with a bang of the gavel, announced that under the rules no work could be done, and declared the session recessed until Friday noon. Callaway, Box 151, Church Point, Louisiana, says maybe he isn't the best fooball center in the country, but he'll bet his pocketknife that there isn't a boy his age who has got the energy he has. Yes, Delmar now feels great! ... and he says he has HADACOL to thank. Mrs. Callaway found that by giving her son, Delmar, HADACOL, his system overcame a deficiency of Vitamins B1, B2, Niacin and Iron. Here is Delmar Callaway's own statement: "I am 13 years old and I am in the 8th grade in the Church Point High School. Last summer I didn't have a bit of energy. I didn't want to ride my bike and I didn't want to play baseball. Mother tried everything to get me to eat a good meal—but I just didn't feel like eating. Food didn't just taste good and lots of times food would upset my stomach when I did eat. Mother says I was underweight for my age. Then mother started giving me HADACOL. I know that in just a little while I started feeling a whole lot better. Now I am center on the football team. I like baseball and basketball, and I ride my bike every evening after school. Mother says she has never seen anyone with such a huge appetite. I like to take HADACOL. Mother says she is never going to let me be without HADACOL." People of All Ages ... have been helped by HADACOL; yes, folks whose systems lacked Vitamins B1, B2, Iron and Niacin. The HADACOL formula is very effective for stomach distress, certain nervous disorders, insomnia due to upset stomach, nagging aches and pains, and a general run-down condition when these troubles are caused by deficiencies of Vitamins B1, B2, Niacin and Iron. Let HADACOL Help You as it has helped thousands of others, if you suffer such deficiencies. Remember, there are no substitutes for HADACOL. Always insist on the genuine HADACOL. No risk involved. Buy a bottle of HADACOL, either the trial size, $1.25, or the large family or hospital size, $3.50, and if HADACOL doesn't help you, you will get your money back. If your druggist does not have HADACOL, order it direct from The LeBlanc Corporation, Lafayette, Louisiana. Women Picketing Eisenhower Home DENVER (AP) — Protesting against re-arming of Western Germany, three women yesterday picketed the residence where Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower is spending the holidays. The women identified themselves as Mrs. Baila Lindenauer, Mrs. Lee Wood and Mrs. Susan Clute. They said they admired Eisenhowed but were opposed to any move that might restore German military power. Mrs. Wood said her 18-year-old son is being drafted and "I don't want him to be an ally of the people who butchered so many millions of our people." Mrs. Wood and Mrs. Lindenauer are of Jewish faith. To the women, who unsuccessfully sought an audience with him, Eisenhower relayed the word that he could "merely follow instructions." Eisenhower is spending the holidays at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Doud, his parents-in-law. MY CHRISTMAS MONEY BOUGHT ME FINE DRYING WEATHER THE YEAR ROUND...
