Drew Pearson Radio Program Goes Begging
NEW YORK (AP)—Adam Hat stores said today it would not renew radio commentator Drew Pearson's contract when it expires Feb. 18.
A statement issued by Charles V. Molesworth, Adam Hat president, said sponsorship of Pearson's weekly program was being dropped because of "a planned change in advertising media for 1951." The company said the decision was not a result of the controversy between Pearson and Senator McCarthy (R-Wis).
Senator McCarthy (R-Wis) attacked Pearson in a Senate speech last Friday. Among other things, he called Pearson "a character assassin" and said Adam Hat stores should stop sponsoring Pearson's Sunday night broadcast on ABC.
Pearson retorted in a statement that "Senator McCarthy is rapidly making the initials 'M.C.' supposed to mean Member of Congress, take on a new meaning—'mental case'."
In Washington, the Evening Star said Adam Hat stores gave Pearson notice the contract would not be renewed after receiving communications from "McCarthy admirers" but that since then there as been a "flood of mail... from those who back Mr. Pearson," leading to further discussions on the question.
Asked whether he had been notified that his contract would not be renewed, Pearson told a reporter that he couldn't comment. He did say that "the Adam Hat people have been swell to me."

Central California Orange Shipments Lauded in Drive to Regain East Markets
Oranges currently being shipped from Central California will go a long way toward regaining consumer acceptance for California fruit in the eastern markets, Joe Imhof, general sales manager for Mutual Orange Distributors told growers in Lindsay.

Occasion for the sales manager's optimism was the MOD board's second annual meeting in Lindsay. The cooperative's governing body has adopted a policy of holding at least one business session in the central California area to become better acquainted with the growers and their particular problems.
Over 100 growers attended a buffet supper at the Mt. Whitney hotel with MOD officials as hosts.
Fruit being shipped from the central California area so far this year is a fresh fruit salesman's dream, Imhof said. Sizes run to about 179 with outside color good and eating quality excellent.
Shipments, however, have been comparatively light. This is partly due to the new central California policy of letting the fruit remain on the tree until it has reached full maturity. Picking has also been light due to heavy rains in the area. Prorate for the area this week is 400 carloads of navels.
Quality of navels being shipped from up north will undoubtedly react favorably on the Southern California deal when volume shipments start, Imhof believes.

The red premier-foreign minister said the three-man U.N. committee's appeal was "unlawful" because Chinese communists do not participate in formation of the committee at the U.N. Assembly.
The committee had sent the Peiping regime three requests to negotiate for a cease-fire — the last one Thursday night.
The United Nations General Assembly at Lake Success set up the committee during a consideration of the Korean crisis.
A red Chinese delegation's chief spokesman blasted the U.N. in a lengthy speech but it was not permitted to participate in the decisions because red China is not a member. The Chinese left New York for home earlier this week.
The red attacks in Western Korea started shortly before Chou's rejection of cease-fire dickering. The attacks indicate an allout offensive against U.N. forces could be expected almost any hour.
Observers were guessing that Christmas Eve might be the signal for the new red drive because of the Oriental practice of striking on Occidental holidays.
General MacArthur's late Friday war summary said from 10 to 12 divisions have been identified along Parallel 38, arbitrary boundary between North and South Korea.
