Statistics Reveal Colonists’ Failure to Convert Free Throws If opponents are looking for a method of stopping the Colonist basketball team, they may find it in the first batch of statistics compiled today by the Gazette. The answer, apparently, is to foul them. Through their first nine games the Colonists had marched to the foul line 177 times and had made good on only 101 tries—a mark of 57 per cent. Most coaches consider 75 per cent as the percentage of free throws that he wants his team to make, with 67 set as the minimum permissible. Bees Worse Poor as this performance may seem, however, consider the plight of Bee Coach Bill Hunstock. He watched his team shoot 97 free throws in its first seven games and make only 28 for an average of 39 per cent. Statistically speaking, Sheldon “Grape” Welch and Ronnie Bevins led the varsity and Bees through these first games. Welch was the high scorer with 103 points and he led in field goals with 45. Ira Webber had the most free throws, 34, and the most fouls, 22, and center Ron Faulkner had made the most free throws, 20. Last season's Northern Division PCC champions, the Washington State Cougars, warm up against Loyola's Lions in the second game. The two local teams trade opponents and playing times tomorrow, with Loyola meeting the Aggies at 7:30 and Troy taking on Washington State, at 9. Coach Forrest Twogood's two platoons of basketballers dashed off their fifth and sixth straight victories over San Diego State and Santa Barbara College over the past week-end. Western Tour Oklahoma A. & M., year-in- and-year-out the scourge of the Missouri valley under Coach Hank Iba, swings through Los Angeles on its first western tour. The Aggie itinerary also calls for two games with California in the Bay region. Iba's ace is all-around star Gale McArthur, advertised as the greatest one-hand shot in the land. In Washington State, the Trojans meet another worthy foe. Coach Twogeod encounters an old rival in Jack Friel, who was coaching the Cougars when the SC headman was handling the Idaho team. Twogood will counter against Iba's deliberate offense with the pressure of close guarding by Bob Kolf and Tom Riach. Troy's defensemen, and a modified fast break attack. Friel of Washington State also has developed "platoon" basketball at the northern institution. Friday night's SC-WSC contest should be a battle of offensive and defensive platoons. The squad got off the train at Adena yesterday morning and most before the echoes of a fearful welcoming committee had come away in the Arroyo Seco ending the famed Rose Bowl, lads were already down to business of drilling for their 20th Year's Day game with Cali-ia. Oosterbaam indicated there might be more "banging of heads" due to double drill scheduled today, Michigan had only one chance to kick outside before leaving Ann Arbor, and the team has only 10 practice sessions, and even fewer days, before going into the season game. Oklahoma, Cal, Texas, Miami, Wyoming Early Favorites to Win Bowl Contests NEW YORK (AP)—If the oddsmakers are right in their early line on eight post-season football games, all will be close contests. No favorite is rated better than a seven-point choice and three of the games are considered either toss-ups or one-point-edge affairs. Oklahoma, top team of the 1950 college grid campaign, is a 6½ point pick over Kentucky in the Sugar Bowl at New Orleans Jan. 1. California, Texas, Miami and Wyoming are chosen in other bowl games. Coach Joe Stydahar, 32 players, officials and newsmen make up a day of 56 leaving at noon aboard chartered United Airlines plane. Monstop flight of about seven will get them to Ohio and headquarters at the Cleveland airline. Stydahar, already acclaimed as the Coach of the Year for herering the Rams to their and straight National conference title, exuded nothing but optimism. Beating the Chicago Bears last day for the conference title was fast Yield, perfect for the Rams' terrific aerial game, was anything. But "meeting Cleveland in theowns' own park, under conditions of cold and probably snowflush is something else," said Joe. Cleveland has played and won last few games under those conditions. We can't expect to catch them with the type of game play. Poor going suits their timing attack perfectly, as Motion Motley has proved ally this season. We just don't know the kind of football to fit our or mud. But we'll show up all right." Cleveland Miffed At NFL Sneering CLEVELAND (AP)—The Cleveland Browns are within one victory of making veteran National Football League members eat their sneers. The four years they were champs of the now defunct All-America football conference the Browns wanted to play the NFL thicker in a sort of professional football world series. Not only did the older league refuse, but there was a sneer in its voice when it said no to the upstart champs. Then after last season the A-A was folded into the older league. The Browns, who won their way to the championship of the NFL's American conference, take on Los Angeles, the National conference winner, Sunday for what now amounts to the world championship. Beating the Los Angeles Rams would mean a lot to Coach Paul Brown and his club. It would repay the older league members' slurs which went down hard here. With them the Rams bring the league's high-scoring record for this year. There are plenty of indications the Browns will remain "up" for this one. The 1950 University of Arizona baseball team had a squad batting average of .326. CHEVROLET CONE BRO 215 No. Los Angeles St.—Anaheim Trojan-Minnesota Coach Trade Cooked Up by Rumor Factory LOS ANGELES (P)—The rumor factory today cooked up a neat exchange of departed coaches between the Universities of Minnesota and Southern California. Bernie Bierman, who stepped down at Minnesota this fall, said he would be interested, if there's an offer, in the job at SC from which Jeff Cravath resigned yesterday under alumni pressure. And one published report here is that Cravath is a hot prospect for Bierman's job at Minnesota, on the strength of his friendship with Minnesota Athletic Director Ike Armstrong. Bierman In SF Bierman expressed interest in the Trojan job at San Francisco where he is a coach for the East-West Shrine game Dec. 20. Cravath, keeping a speaking engagement in Monterey, last night, came up with philosophical wise-cracking about his forced quitting. “If I'm ever lucky enough to land another coaching job, I'm going to win football games and let the other fellow build character,” he said. Showing movies of the Trojan 9-7 win over Notre Dame, a victory over a traditional foe which wasn't enough to save his hide after a dismal season, Cravath watched the scene where his players carried him off the field and said: “There goes a monkey on a pogo stick!” List Growing Cravath says he doesn’t have immediate plans for his future. List Growing Cravath says he doesn't have immediate plans for his future. Plans of SC for a successor are in the immediate hands of Athletic Director Willis O, Hunter. The list of possibilities grows longer with each new edition of the sports pages. Mentioned are Coaches Paul Brown, Cleveland Browns; Bud Wilkinson, Oklahoma; Tay Brown, Compton; Jordan Olivar, Loyola of Los Angeles; Charles Caldwell, Princeton; Paul Bryant, Kentucky; Frank Howard, Clemson; Lefty James, Cornell; Don Faurot, Missouri; Frank Leahy, Notre Dame, and Athletic Director Fritz Crisiler, Michigan, and Clark Shaughnessy, late of the Los Angeles Rams. Then, too, there are other coaches separated from jobs this year: Bo McMillin, Detroit Lions; Blair Cherry, Texas; Bierman, Wes Fesler, Ohio State. At the moment, no one apparently knows how interested SC is in any of these gentry, or vice versa. Leahy has said repeatedly all the rest of his coaching will be at Notre Dame. Crisler has disavowed interest in coaching anywhere. Referee Harry Ebbets also had one even. Ring Stimulant Sonny Boy, moving backward as he was hit, fell flat on his back, his head hitting the ring canvas with a thump. He did not regain consciousness. Dr. Nardiello administered a stimulant in the ring. After West was carried downstairs to his dressing room in the basement of the ancient arena, Nardiello gave him another injection. Then the ambulance hurried him to St. Clare's hospital. Brain Blood Clot Shortly after arrival at the hospital, West was rushed to the operating room. Nardiello reported "neurological findings indicate a blood clot." Nardiello and Dr. Daniels, a brain specialist, performed the operation. Only 895 fans were present but many thousands saw the bout which was carried on a television and radio network. Chevrolet LARGEST AND FINEST LOW-PRICED CAR!
