Anaheim Gazette WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1950 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Earthworm Value Rated too High Soil improvement by purchase and propagation of earthworms is economically and biologically unsound. Soil can be enriched much more quickly and economically by the addition of manure, commercial fertilizer, or proper use of cover crops and soil management, announced A. H. Holland, farm advisor of the Agricultural Extension Service. He states that barnyard and green manures when in the soil will encourage worms already present. Holland states that earthworms do contribute to the improvement of some soils by hastening decay of organic matter and by changing the structure of some soils. In humid regions with heavy, moist soil and where the most favorable conditions exist, worm populations and their effects on the soil may be great. It is wrong to expect that a relatively few worms added to almost any Orange county soil will increase and produce similar results. In fact, Holland says, if the worms are introduced into unfavorable moisture or temperature conditions, they probably will decrease instead of increase in numbers. Worms are also subject to parasites and predators which are frequently in the soil. Scientific research has demonstrated that only in exceptionally poor soils can any other crop production benefit a continual cycle and death must be maintained as a large population of earthworms must be for food. Laguna Cage Looking for G Dale Whitegon of Lagu today put out a plea r basketball games for "ch teams made of boys 17- old." Whitegon asked those in those categories to con if they wished to schedule after Jan. 3. He has repo the Laguna team will have able the high school Wednesday and Saturday o'clock, and he is also w travel to play in other other nights. Whitegon asked those games to contact him Woodland drive, Lagun or phone Laguna 44844. In fact, Holland says, if the worms are introduced into unfavorable moisture or temperature conditions, they probably will decrease instead of increase in numbers. Worms are also subject to parasites and predators which are frequently in the soil. Scientific research has demonstrated that only in exceptionally poor soils can any apparent benefit be derived from the physical activity of worms, and that the fertilizing effect is dependent upon their dead bodies. To obtain this benefit a continual cycle and death must be maintained and to maintain an large population of earth organic matter must be for food.
