East-West Okies Win-Lose Games
NEW YORK (AP) — Oklahoma basketball teams invaded the East and West coasts and only one still sports an unbeaten record today.
The Oklahoma Aggies squeaked past California at Berkeley last night, 36-35, to make it six straight victories. But Holy Cross dropped Oklahoma at Boston, 53-50, in a rematch of the 1947 NCAA finalists.
Cross won in '47 too.
Hank Iba's Aggies, playing defensive ball as usual, had to come from behind a 35-32 short end. Don Johnson sank the winning goal with 47 seconds left after Keith Smith's set-up made it 35-34. A & M led only in the opening and last minute. The Aggies rank fifth nationally in this week's Associated Press poll.
Holy Cross couldn't stop 6-foot 11-inch Marcus Frieberger, who scored 18 points, but the Crusader's sophomore center, Jim Kielley, tallied 17 on his own.
No. 2 Bradley fought off ninth-ranking UCLA, 79-74, for its seventh straight success. The Braves apparently had the game sewed up at 50-36 on their home court but UCLA's fast break began to click in the second half.
Dick Ridgway and Eddie Sheldrake closed the gap to 75-72 with two and half minutes to go before Bradley won out. Ridgway scored 91.
Colonists, B Team Ends SB Win String
Having had their own undefeated skein ruined only last week, the Colonist Bees earned some sort of consolation last night when they put an end to Santa Barbara's streak, shattering the Don victory march by a 40-27 count.
Bill Ames, who wasn't even a starter until last week, led the scoring with 11 points—10 of them coming in the first half.
The Bees almost set a pattern which was to follow in the varsity game, roaring to a giant lead in the first period, watching some of it evaporate in the second quarter, and then managing to hold their own in the final half.
Scoring Scattered
Although Ames was high, scoring was well distributed among the Colonists. Lanky Dave Moody had nine and Ronnie Bevins and Lenny Kolb each finished with eight. Hee LaBarge of Santa Barbara was high with nine for the Dons with Sal Rivera next with eight.
Besides the first quarter, when they ran up a 15-4 edge, the Colonists made no concentrated scoring splurge, but the baskets seemed to come when they were needed. Ames was high in the first quarter with six and in the second time.
As it is wont to do frost to time, Associated Press started another poll among members, the results of which due to start clicking in wires from New York late week or early next week.
AP has quite a fetish sort of thing and has also remarkably well in choosing of interest. One of the polls of years in the sport was dreamed up earlier than when AP polled its member to the top athletes in sports for the first half there was a great scattering of opinion among contributors, an even greater difference after the results were published. Colonists. Lanky Dave Moody had nine and Ronnie Bevins and Lenny Kolb each finished with eight. Hec LaBarge of Santa Barbara was high with nine for the Dons with Sal Rivera next with eight.
Besides the first quarter, when they ran up a 15-4 edge, the Colonists made no concentrated scoring splurge, but the baskets seemed to come when they were needed. Ames was high in the first quarter with six and in the second quarter with four (he was the only Colonist to score in this period). Bevins led the third quarter with five, and Moody the final session with five.
Miss Free Throws
The Bees lost an excellent opportunity to build up a gigantic lead at first, blowing six of seven free throws offered them in the first period. They were ahead 5-0, though, before LaBarge threw in a field goal and built this to 11-2 before LaBarge again hit with a free throw.
Frost set in in the second period. Ames hit one from the corner to open the scoring, but the Colonists then proceeded to miss everything they threw at the basket while the Dons were hitting four field goals and two free throws. Finally, with only 25 seconds left in the half, Ames cut loose with a 49-footer that ended the famine.
Ames Departs
Ames collected his first foul in the closing seconds of this period, but he went out fast when he returned to the floor, being waved out early in the final period.
The Colonists, who had left with a 19-13 edge at halftime, then threw in a pair of baskets by Bevins and one each by Angie Huesca and Kolb to take a 31-19 margin at the close of the third period. The fourth period was rife with fouls, but scant with points. Santa Barbara missed all three free tosses that it tried, the Colonists converted one out of five.
The two teams will meet again on Friday in a preliminary to the Colonist-Don game in Santa Barbara.

As it is wont to do from time to time, Associated Press has started another poll among its members, the results of which are due to start clicking in over the last few days from New York later this week.
AP has quite a fetish for this sort of thing and has also done remarkably well in choosing top-of-interest. One of the best balls of years in the sports field was dreamed up earlier this year when AP polled its members as to the top athletes in various sports for the first half century. Here was a great scaffolding of opinion among contributors, an even greater difference after the results were published. Right or wrong, wever, it made for good reading.
The current poll is one of a regiment of three)
Not too many here either. The only one that ranked consideration, it was felt, and that was not named was the Oklahoma football team. It was a team with only one first stringer back from last year and went on to capture the mythical championship of the nation.
I felt, though, that there was absolutely no one that could challenge the CCNY basketball team that won both the NIT and NCAA titles. Behind it were listed the New York Yankees and the Australian Davis Cup team.
4 Which team or athlete, pro or amateur, was the biggest disappointment of the year? (name three)
These were plentiful. Was it the Boston Red Sox, who again blew in a "sure" pennant? How about the Philadelphia Eagles, pro champs last year, collapsing to a 6-6 record? Or maybe Citation getting whipped regularly? And what about Paul Pettit, the Anaheim Captures 10th Straight
Though few of the scattered assemblage gathered roundabout could probably tell why Anaheim marched to its 10th straight win of the year last night, topping invading Santa Barbara 45-32.
The same two teams will meet in a replay on Friday night, this time in the Channel city.
Although leading all the way, the Colonists never really had the game cinched until the final two minutes and Coach Sam Keith used only seven men, barely scraping the surface of his reserve power.
Welch Hot
It wasn't much of a team victory, the general object last night seeming to be an effort to somehow work the bail over to Sheldon Welch, who would then stuff it down the basket—a feat whose accomplishment seems to have escaped the rest of the team.
Welch, fortunately, responded to his teammate's plans, pouring through nine field goals for 18 points—high mark for the year for Colonist individual scoring. None of his shots were "easy," ranging from one-handed pushes from the corner to tip-ins to hook shots while driving around the Cravath Q As Troy Co LOS ANGELES Cravath resigned as coach at the University California today.

BEYER
The current poll is one of a regular series carried on by AP every year. Others include the weekly football ratings, the week-basketball ratings (to start this week), and a yearly all-star baseball questionnaire.
The current one is called the annual year-end poll." Being a member of the Associated Press, the Gazette was asked to participate in the answering of the questions. When the results start coming out you may muse, "I wonder what emptyhead down at the Gazette said on this one," so end your turmoil these were the answers sent from here.
1. Who is the male athlete, either pro or amateur, of the year? (name three).
Actually, there were many good athletes this year, but it was hard pick one who stood far above the rest as in past years. Taken to consideration were Jim Buchs, who rewrote the record book when it came to shotputting;obby Reynolds, perhaps the greatest sophomore football player all time; Joe Culmone, a jockey who came from nowhere to be the country's leading rider; Noor, wonder horse unknown at the start of the year; Ralph Kiner, the only thing that drew people to herbs field; and Ray Robinson, the best pound-for-pound fighteristant. These were, it is repeated, considered, but none made the list.
The three, in order, who were kicked were Dick Attlesey, the southern California hurdler; heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles; and pitcher Jim Konlanty of the Phils.
2. Who is the female athlete, either pro or amateur? (name tree).
This was not a great year for ladies, as far as could be remembered, and this was a rather tough one to answer. The only free, as a matter of fact, that vis Cup team.
And what about Paul Pettit, the $100,000 bonus baby who dropped in his first year in baseball?
None of these were good enough I felt. The three that absolutely folded up this year when great things were expected of them were Joe Louis, the Notre Dame football team, and Ted Schroeder.
5. Which team or athlete, either pro or amateur, made the most outstanding comeback in 1950? (name three)
Without comment, they were Ben Hogan, Eddie Waltkus, and Sal Maglie.
6. What was the biggest sports upset in 1950? (name three)
Four came to mind, and it was hard to eliminate any of them, so they were picked this way: 1. Navy winning over Army in the service clash at Philadelphia. 2. Sam Urzetta winning the US Amateur open golf championship. 3. tied with Noor whipping Citation four straight times and Budge Patty winning the Wimbledon championship.
7. What was the oddest or most humorous sports incident of the year?
Not very many humorous ones popped up that could be recalled but there were several "freaks" during the year. The decision to start Jim Konstany in the World's Series was certainly not a casual item. Army Coach Red Blaik's outburst at the professional football teams was worthy of note. A fan being shot at the Polo grounds was certainly not an everyday occurrence.
The strangest of all, though, was believed to be the win turned in by Reed college's football team. Reed, after losing 17 straight over the past four years, was being mentioned as a possibility to face Eastern Oregon, loser of 18 straight, in a Futility Bowl game. It was practically all set when Reed how work the ball over to Sheldon Welch, who would then stuff it down the basket—a feat whose accomplishment seems to have escaped the rest of the team.
Welch, fortunately, responded to his teammate's plans, pouring through nine field goals for 18 points—high mark for the year for Colonist individual scoring. None of his shots were "easy," ranging from one-handed pushes from the corner to tip-ins to hook shots while driving around the key. Most of his scoring came from his regular guard spot, but when Ron Faulkner sat out part of the third quarter Welch moved into that vacated spot and scored from there, too.
Start Fast
For a while it looked as though the Colonists might make a runaway of it as they romped to a 10-1 lead. Dennis Denny, Jim Ball, and Ira Webber each hit a basket and Welch had a pair before Carl Carmack hit the first basket for the Dons.
Santa Barbara was considerably harrassed during this period by the close guarding of Ball and Webber just past the center line, but when this pair began to lag a bit in the second period the Dons started penetrating a bit deeper into the Colonist defense.
Hold Edge
The Colonists, however, who led 12-6 at the quarter, saw it narrow to 12-9 and then jump back to the seven-point spread — which they managed to maintain throughout the remainder of the game. It was only through several Don errors, though, that the gap stood up.
Payne Green, the Don center, was high for the visitors in the scoring column with 11 points and Faulkner hit five field goals including a pair of his unstoppable hooks.
The game was remarkably low in fouls, only a total of 19 being called. Of these, Colonists were socked for a dozen, plus one unintentional technical foul call for face guarding.

Vets Hospital Plans Christmas For Patients
Christmas holidays for more than 8000 veteran patients at the three Veterans Administration hospitals of the Los Angeles area will bring full hours of enjoyment through combined efforts of hospital staffs and volunteer workers, according to managers at the VA Center in West Los Angeles, and the Long Beach and San Fernando VA hospitals.
At the VA Center, where there are over 6300 patients in Brentwood and Wadsworth hospitals and Domiciliary, all chapels will display the manger as the keynote of their decorations. There will be special services and choir music, and carols will be sung in wards for veterans unable to leave their beds. The bedside networks will also carry religious music.
Parties will be staged in all barracks of the Domiciliary, and the theater will hold shows. "The Life of Christ" will be a featured movie. At Brentwood many patients are on furloughs for Christmas with their families.

Good Mechanic is Good Wife of Today
"Is she a good mechanic?" may be one of the questions for a young man of today to consider in choosing his bride. The homemaker today needs more mechanical knowledge than ever before, says Mrs. Marian Prentiss, Home Advisor of the Agricultural Extension Service, because of the great increase in labor-saving equipment in the modern home. Whether she realizes it or not, the "little woman" often is in the position of superintendent or even chief engineer of a mechanized center. For the family's welfare, comfort and safety, she may need to know more about electricity, plumbing, heating and other household equipment than her husband.
The hand that rocks the cradle now runs washing machine, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, sewing machine and an increasing number of other mechanical servants. Whether she uses them to best advantage and keeps them in condition depends considerably on her understanding of how they work. Her mechanical knowledge also can help in buying home equipment. In emergencies she may be called on to make simple repairs, such as changing an electric fuse, patching an electric cord or plug, or opening a clogged sink drain.

others followed a "secret meeting" last night at which the alumni group voted to request Cravath's resignation and arrange to buy up his contract.
Speculation, most of it on the hasty side, on Cravath's successor included such names as Paul Brown, Coach of the Cleveland Browns pro club; Jordan Olivar of Loyola of Los Angeles; Bud Wilkinson of Oklahoma, and as often tossed about in recent years, the name of Frank Leahy of Notre Dame.
"I regret with all my heart to leave my alma mater as football coach," said Cravath. "I hold no animosity toward Southern California, or any of its officials, however. I sincerely wish my successor—whoever he may be—the very best of luck."
Intimates of Cravath said several things remain to be definitely cleared up, primarily the matter of paying Cravath a purported $30,000 to buy up the two years left on his contract with SD.

SAN FRANCISCO (P) — The East squad of the Shrine East-West football classic here Dec. 30 sat down to its first chalk talk yesterday—and immediately came up with a spy scare.
Coach Tuss McLaughry of Dartmouth was passing out mimeographed booklets of plays the East will use in the charity game when he discovered there weren't enough to go around.
"But I had 50 of these printed in Chicago," McLaughry rasped.
Co-mentors Bernie Bierman, ex-Minnesota, and Bob Voights, Northwestern, and the players ransacked the hotel banquet room headquarters. The missing booklets were not found.
Someone suggested a West "spy." Vigilantes immediately offered to hunt down the culprit.
All was confusion until late afternoon. Then as the squad, still muttering threats, prepared to go to Golden Gate park for conditioning workouts, in walked Coach McLaughry. The missing play diagrams were under his arm.
"Found 'em in the bottom of my trunk," was his sheepish explanation.
Both East and West teams go into intensive training tomorrow.
The West, under Coaches Marchre Schwartz, Stanford; Howie Odell, Washington, and Jess Neely, Rice, goes to the Stanford campus at Palo Alto for nine days of hard work.
The East will practice at the Santa Clara campus.
