Here's the Dope On Registration Of Automobile Owners of non-resident vehicles who expect to register them in California next month are advised to consult immediately with the department of Motor Vehicles at 405 S. Main, Orange, regarding requirements. A. H. Henderson, director of motor vehicles in Sacramento, explained this will enable such owners to assemble all necessary papers and thus avoid delays and possible penalties. In general, owners of non-resident motor vehicles must present a title and registration card from the state of registration. If from a non-title state, a completely documented chain of ownership of the vehicle must be presented with the registration card. Lacking either a title or a documented chain of ownership, such owners may submit an indemnity bond for the value of the vehicle. The department also will issue, if desired, a "no ownership" registration which enables the vehicle to be operated in California without issuance of a pink ownership certificate. The department is currently mailing potential registration cards Aircraft Company Displays Latest In Mechanical Calculators LOS ANGELES (F)—Northrup Aircraft, Inc., comes up today with the latest in those robot brain machines. This one looks like a kitchen stove, has a ladylike name, and can do the same work as the warehouse sized models used by a few large universities. Northrup engineers call it "Maddida," pronounced "Mad Ida." They say it can predict the best design for an airplane or ship, navigate and guide a rocket to the moon, operate a factory production line, or solve in a few seconds mathematical problems so complex it would take months or years to work them out on ordinary calculating equipment. The full name for the little gem is "magnetic drum digital differential analyzer." You could pick it up for about $30,000. With optional accessories, the cost runs close to $150,000. Earlier jumbo affairs sometimes occupy entire buildings and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some whoppers have 18,000 vacuum tubes or require hundreds of motors to drive moving parts. Maddida computes with fewer than 100 tubes and has only one moving part. The works are packed into a cabinet of about the same dimensions as a pinball machine. The first model was built for the experimental towing tank of the Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N. J. It will be used to predict the best design for ship hulls and waterborne projectiles. U.S. production of mustard seed reached a peak of 73,000,000 pounds in 1941 but dropped to 11,000,000 in 1949. An extra payment of this sort for a company of our size represents a very large amount. The possibility of similar payments in future years will continue to depend upon the results attained in those years." Mr. Hughes added: "We are happy that the company is able to recognize associates efforts in this special, substantial manner in addition to the regular company provisions for associates benefit, which include the Sick Benefit plan, the Gratuitous Death and Dismemberment Benefit plan, the Thrift and Profit-Sharing Retirement plan and others." W. Irwin, 2nd vice-president presided over the meeting. Hal Eastwood has Alfred Stock and Lee Benson as associates on the sanitation committee. It was decided to have a repeat meeting in January at which Lowell McLean, engineer from the office of J. R. Lester Boyle would be present to answer questions from the ranchers as to how the proposed joint water and sewer district would be formed. An agreement was reached to form the district where there is a concentrated population and try to skirt the large groves and farms who feel that, unless they should decide to subdivide their land, sanitation is not an immediate problem. Many would like water but without sanitation. However, it is more economical to have the engineer go into both matters at the same time. The JOS sanitation plan for Stanton stated the district to be from Euclid to Holder and Lincoln to Chapman at a cost of almost $75,000. The chamber is desirous to drop almost 4000 of the 7000 acres to form a small district and thereby keep the cost down to a minimum.
