Anaheim Earns Semifinals, Moves Past Excelsior 65-19 Excelsior tried lighting both ends of a candle yesterday and wound up with only burned fingers for its experiment. Trying to compete in two basketball tournaments at the same time, it was bumped out of both, losing to Anaheim 65-19 in the Huntington Beach tourney and falling to Monrovia 48-29 in the Long Beach tournament. For Anaheim, it was the second straight easy win in the tournament and will match the Colonists against Newport tonight at 8 in the Huntington Beach gym. Tustin meets Bell Gardens in the other semifinals. Other Scores Other scores yesterday: Championship flight—Bell Gardens 41, Valencia 26; Tustin 48, Fullerton 28; Newport 45, Orange 43. Consolation flight—Huntington Beach 55, Capistrano 25; Laguna Beach 49, Downey 38; Santa Ana 80, Garden Grove 31; Brea-Olinda 55, Bellflower 38. Hoping to squeak by the earlier games at Huntington Beach with a conglomeration of substitutes, jayvees and Bees, Excelsior managed to make it only to the second round. The Colonists, using starters only sparingly, rolled to a 31-10 halftime edge and let the reserves take over from there. Run a Little With the starters seeing only eight minutes of action on the opening night, Anaheim Coach Sam Keith decided to use them a bit longer last night and was almost immediately accused from some quarters of "pouring it on." "These games so far haven’t even been as good as a workout in..." A. B. CHANDLER 'Until the final second' Major Owners Pick Committee to Find Chandler Successor A. B. CHANDLER 'Until the final second' Major Owners Pick Committee to Find Chandler Successor ST. PETERSBURG (AP)—Major league club owners appointed a four-man committee today to search for a new commissioner to replace A. B. (Happy) Chandler, who again vowed that he would not resign. The committee, composed of two men from the National and two from the American League, was instructed to begin screening candidates immediately and endeavor to bring back a report to owners at their meeting next February. Up in Salary The committee also has been empowered to offer a $75,000 a year salary to Chandler's successor. That amounts to a $10,000 increase over the salary paid to the present commissioner. WEBB A club president who asked his name not be used, said the majority of the club owners voiced their preference for a man having no connection with baseball. That man also must be a "universally respected person possessing a judicial mind," he added. Eliminates Some This would tend to eliminate such heretofore outstanding candidates as Ford Frick, president of the National League; George Trautman, head of the minors, and Warren Giles, president of the Cincinnati Reds. Although neither league has made public its committee, it is believed that Del Webb, vice-president of the New York Yankees, and Billy Evans, general manager of the Detroit Tigers, are the American League pair while Lou Perini, Boston Braves president, and Giles represent the N.A. Run a Little With the starters seeing only eight minutes of action on the opening night, Anaheim Coach Sam Keith decided to use them a bit longer last night and was almost immediately accused from some quarters of "pouring it on." "These games so far haven't even been as good as a workout in our gym," Keith explained this morning. "This way the first string doesn't get any practice so last night I told my starters to stay out there and work up a sweat. I didn't care if they never scored any points just so long as they ran a little." B. Chandler. Some of the leading stars were asked yesterday what they thought about the recent startling developments in St. Petersburg. Typical comment came from Ralph Kiner, Pittsburgh home run king, and Stan Musial, outfield star of the St. Louis Cardinals. Kiner declared: "All I can say is that I was surprised, really surprised. Personally, I thought Chandler was a wonderful guy. He was always fair to me." Musial, an employee of Fred Saigh, one of the anti-Chandler faction, asserted Chandler "was doing a very good job and we in BOSTON (AP) — Blazing spirit, which was misconstrued by several young pitchers, probably played an important part in the Boston Red Sox' sale catcher George (Birdie) Tebbett's Spirit Wrote His Finis IT IS NO SECRET THAT, WHILE RED SOX WERE MAKING THEIR LATE AND FUTILE PENNANT DRAG LAST SEPTEMBER, SEVERAL OF CLUB'S HURLERS HAD ADVISED ME Although neither league has made public its committee, it is believed that Del Webb, vice-president of the New York Yankees, and Billy Evans, general manager of the Detroit Tigers, are the American League pair while Lou Perini, Boston Braves president, and Giles represent the National League. "The owners do not want a baseball man for commissioner," the informant said, "they fear that a man inside the baseball family might be more friendly to some than others and therefore might tend to be prejudiced. They want a man with a judicial mind who is not directly connected with politics." In the meantime, Chandler steadfastly sticks to his vow to keep his job "until the final second of my tenure." ON A NEW TRACK—Santa Ana college Track Coach John Ward points out a few of the feates of the new track being built at the college to Cliff Horton and Bill Wallace. Horton, who lives 2010 E. Broadway in Anaheim, and Wallace are prospective track men. The track, scheduled to be completed in March, is eagerly awaited since most of the practice for cross-country runners thus has been held in adjacent orange groves. Tebbetts' Spirit Note His Finis TON (AP) — Blazing team which was misconstrued several young pitchers, problayed an important part in Boston Red Sox' sale of George (Birdie) Tebbetts Cleveland Indians. No secret that, while the ox were making their beand futile pennant drive september, several of the churlers had advised Manand a chance to play for the National League crown Dec. 24, and the largest crowd of 1950's regular season—upwards of 75,000—is expected to sit in. All-Time Tackle Halas, a brilliant and dominating figure in pro football for some 28 years, needs no introduction to grid fans here or elsewhere. Stydahar rates as one of the all-time great tackles in Chicago Bear history, and already has qualified, as far as Los Angeles fans are concerned, as the outstanding freshman coach in the league this fall. He succeeded a very respected, very wise tactician, Clark Shaughnessy, and the odds against Big Joe were enormous to start with. He inherited a team good enough to win the Western Division title and replaced the man credited with steering it to the title game. Thoughtless Words The good Mr. Shaughnessy on departing dropped a few thoughtless words about Joe's qualifications as a head coach, which didn't help, and the club proceeded to drop a pair of exhibition tilts this fall, which hurt even worse. The Rams have won seven of their last eight games, losing only one in maddening conditions in the snow at Chicago to the Bears. Last year they tailed off badly in the stretch, winning but two, losing two and tying two in the final six games. Then they blew the championship to Philadelphia here, 14-0. No Chess Men The other contrast deals with personalities. Last year there was dissension between Shaughnessy and his assistants, of whom Joe was one, and Shaughnessy and some of the players. Without going deep into details, let it be said that 38-year-old Stydahar handles his players as individuals. He knows their good Blazing team which was misconstrued several young pitchers, probably an important part in Boston Red Sox' sale of Sir George (Birdie) Tebbetts to Cleveland Indians. No secret that, while the box were making their beast and futile pennant drive September, several of the hurlers had advised Man-steve O'Neill they were unable to pitch to Tebbetts, the top-ranking receiver. Veteran who played strictly in Tebbetts aroused the ire of youngsters by his tactics trying to teach them to corneir mistakes and eliminate laws. They objected to his presence. Experienced hurlers com-mitted that Tebbetts, in tight generally called for a fast night before the season Tebbetts described some of club's pitchers as "juvenile nents and moronic malcon-crack, uttered in O'Neill's face, was Tebbetts' Red Sox story. And of expected something this," Tebbetts said. "But I know why I was sold or is behind it. I always got with Hank Greenberg and general manager) we played together in De-Vith Cleveland, I'll be secr-ring to Jimmy Hegan, I will rate as the outstanding in the major leagues." No Chess Men The other contrast deals with personalities. Last year there was dissension, between Shaughnessy and his assistants, of whom Joe was one, and Shaughnessy and some of the players. Without going deep into details, let it be said that 38-year-old Stydahar handles his players as individuals. He knows their good and weak points, their personal problems, and temperaments. He does not treat them, as one Ram official pointed out, as "chess men on a board." Joe can be tough and he can also be understanding. Musacco MVP LOS ANGELES (AP)—Fullback George Musacco of Loyola University for the third time has won his team's most valuable player award. He was also named 1950 captain at the Lions annual football banquet last night. Guard Maury Nipp was named most outstanding lineman. San Antonio In Second Round of Chaffey Test In an impressive performance in a tournament that was marked mostly by ones that weren’t, Fullerton rolled by East Los Angeles in its first test in the tenth annual Chaffey Invitation Basketball tourney yesterday by a 65-55 score. Actually the game wasn’t even that close, Coach Alex Omalev throwing 14 men into the contest, literally sweeping the bench after the Hornets had rolled up a 23-point lead midway through the second half. They are scheduled to meet another Eastern conference foe, Mt. San Antonio, this afternoon at 5:30 in the second-round trial. First Round Scores Mt. SAC eliminated Santa Ana yesterday, winning an easy 62-47 victory. Other first round results: Pasadena 47, Orange Coast 37; Chaffey 59, Santa Monica 57; Riverside 51, San Diego 39; Long Beach 64, Bakersfield 61; San Bernardino 75, Cal Poly 54; Ventura 59, Branch Aggies of Cedar City, Utah, 51. For the fourth straight time in as many outings this year, the Hornets found a new high point man as Pete Hook poured in eight field goals and a free throw for 17 points. Dick Hammer and Tex Thomas also got into the double figures with 13 and 11, respectively. Hammer Shines Hammer, one of three players with a chance to repeat as an all-star tourney player this year, made a good impression in his first outing. Slowed down by ‘Fast Break’ Egan Becomes Homesick WALLA WALLA, Wash., (D) — Ralph Burns Egan, exponent of the “fast break” in basketball, was back in the state penitentiary today. Tuesday night Egan, a reserve guard on the prison’s city league hoop team, scored six points before coming up missing at the YMCA. Last night he returned to the “Y” and telephoned the prison, which provided him with gratis “taxi” service back to his “quarters.” He did not explain his absence. bracket, besides the Fullerton-Mt. Frequently of late the Tigers have been reported dangling for Fain in their attempts to fill a weak spot in their infield. The reported offer would include $100,000 in cash and $50,000 in players. General Manager Billy Evans of Detroit and Art Ehlers, the All-general manager, were said to have agreed to talk it over further before the end of the week. There was no hint as to what players the Tigers would be willing to give up. Fain once played with the San Francisco Seals. Hammer Shines Hammer, one of three players with a chance to repeat as an all-star tourney player this year, made a good impression in his first outing. Slowed down by three quick fouls in the first half, he hit for four field goals in the final session.
