Colonists Sweep Past Downey by 53-28 Face Excelsior in Hunt. Beach Tourner By ERNIE BEYER HUNTINGTON BEACH—Playing their best game—or at least, their best quarter of the year, Anaheim's Colonists passed their first Huntington Beach tournament test racked up their sixth straight win of the year with an easy 53-28 conquest of Downey last night. Coach Sam Keith used his regulars for only eight minutes, but they attacked with ferocity in that period that they ran up a 22-3 lead and could have easily broken the ing record of 75 points set the preceding night by Bell Gardens had Keith so desired. He chose, rather, to allow reserves to pick up valuable experience in the one-sided affair. He took 15 men along on the trip and all of them played at least one complete quarter. The first stringers played the first period, the second team was in for the second and third quarters, and the third stringers finished out the game. Score Mounts The score, however, even continued to swell with the subs in as the tally was 51-25 for Anaheim over the last three periods. With the first-round win, the Colonists were scheduled to meet Excelsior in the second round at 4 this afternoon. Excelsior nosed by Laguna Beach 39-37 in the final game yesterday. Earlier in the afternoon, Orange had defeated Bellflower, 60-27, and Newport won over Brea-Olinda, 56-12, to advance to the second round. Major League Owners Open Search For Successor to Commissioner ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (P)—The major league owners, determined to remove baseball Commissioner A. Excelsior nosed by Laguna Beach 39-37 in the final game yesterday. Earlier in the afternoon, Orange had defeated Bellflower, 60-27, and Newport won over Brea-Olinda, 56-12, to advance to the second round. Of the 15 men who saw action last night, 12 hit the scoring column with one from each unit being blanked. And it was Jim Holve, who didn't get in until the final quarter, who finally carried off scoring honors with nine points. Quick Tallying The Colonists struck with such suddenness that it must have been almost sickening to Downey supporters. After missing one or two shots, Ronnie Faulkner dropped a free throw to open the scoring, and the Colonists rashed out with lightning-like baskets by Dennis Denny, Grape Welch, Welch, and Ira Webber to lead 9-0 with only two minutes gone. Faulkner added two more baskets before the Vikings were able to cut into the scoring column. Stunned by the flurry of baskets, Downey was frequently unable to get the ball across the center line before it was stolen by either Jim Ball or Webber in the Anaheim front line. Anaheim lost only the second quarter when the second stringers proved to be rather frigid in their shooting and were edged 8-6. They were little better in the third period, but Downey was even worse as Anaheim won 7-2. And whoever finally ends up with it—if anybody does—will be burned to the extent of $112,000, at least. The club's 200 stockholders decided unanimously last night to give President Abe Watner until 5 p.m. Friday to accept their proposal to take over operation of the National Football league club for a two-year period. Changed Mind This is what Watner originally wanted. But now he says he's going to turn down the offer because the way the team's board of directors shopped around for some new backers made him "thoroughly disgusted and fed up." The board attempted to get several groups interested in putting up money to back the Colts after Watner demanded in October that he be given sole owner. Sports Writers, Broadcasters Praise, Lambast Two Platoon NEW YORK (AP) — The only thing that can be said for certain about the two-platoon football system is that it has produced two rabid schools of thought among the nation's most vocal and outspoken fans—the sports writers and radio men who "cover" the games. Approximately half of them think it is the greatest invention since money. Their opposite numbers consider the two-platoon an unmitigated evil which threatens to ruin the game. Very few of the hundreds who responded to the Associated Press' annual year-end poll were neutral about it. The question put to them was "Do you think that two-platoon football is dividing the teams into 'saves' and 'have-nots'?" Many answered merely yes or no, but a majority expressed themselves at some length. Following is a cross-section of their remarks: "Yes, it overmatches the TCU in Texas and many which don't have unlimited power already are feel strain." "Platoons—spittoons had have. They as haunt't." "It's already cut out cent of upsets by minor over major squads. never be another Cent-vard type of upset." "It is wonderful for ers. Commissioner seemed his old rival, but he said: "I did not recede from and earlier in the day." The board attempted to get several groups interested in putting up money to back the Colts after Watner demanded in October that he be given sole ownership of the team or be reimbursed for his losses. Watner took over managerial reins last year after agreeing to meet all losses. At the end of the year, he was either to be reimbursed, get to operate the club in collaboration with five of the directors or gain sole control. Owner In Debt Whoever takes over the franchise will have to absorb the $62,000 to $80,000 Watner estimates he lost this season. In addition, George Preston Marshall, owner of the Washington Redskins, will have to be paid $50,000 by January 5. That's the second installment on $150,000 Baltimore agreed to pay Marshall for his territorial rights when the Colts of the old All-America conference were admitted to the NFL. Cal Junior Colleges Open Play Today in Chaffey Test Just about the best that Southern California has to offer in the way of junior college basketball started firing at 11:30 this morning in the tenth annual Chaffey Invitation Basketball tournament. And that firing is scheduled to keep up until just about midnight tonight. With only Glendale among the top teams missing from the gathering, the four-day tournament opened this morning not to end until its finals on Saturday night. Santa Ana played its first game against Mt. San Antonio at 2:30 this afternoon and Fullerton is scheduled to open against East Los Angeles junior college tonight at 7. The Hornets, one of the teams rated as an "outsider" this year, went to the finals before losing to Ventura in 1949. Ventura, the defending champion, is again picked as one of the teams most likely to succeed. The Pirates are again undefeated this year going into the tournament and bring back with them center Ernie Hall and forward Ed. Millan, both all-tournament choices last year. One other all-tourney pick—guard Dick Hammer of Fullerton—also returns this year. Others given a good chance to go all the way are Pasadena city college and Chaffey, the host team. Another given an "outsider" Florida Governor Eyes Meade OK MIAMI, Fla., (P)—The reinstatement of jockey Don Meade brought new repercussions today and Florida's Governor Fuiler Warren indicated he will take a hand. Warren indicated concern over the threat of the National Association of State Racing Commissioners to cancel plans to hold their annual convention here next month.
