Make This Christmas
Local Shops Bulge with Presents Calculated to Delight Youngsters
By JOAN S. WHITE
Gazette Home Economist
Buying toys for children is one of the chief delights that comes with Christmas. That delight may be tinged with uncertainty when, upon stepping into one of Anaheim's bulging toy centers, you are confronted with literally hundreds of different toys, each one more exciting than the last. Which to choose is the $64 question.
A good toy is one which not only brings happiness to your youngster on Christmas Day but inspires constructive play throughout the year. Modern toy makers know this and are making toys to meet certain needs of play.
Paints and crayons to color with, clay for modeling and blocks to build with are the basic essential for creative work. After you have checked to see that the paints are non-poisonous, you will probably want to buy the biggest set that you can afford. They will fill many happy hours.
The Betty Rose Shop has a good array of paints. One of the most interesting centers around Hopalong Cassidy. The paints are in the shape of running horses and busy cowboys and the colors come in campfire red sage purple and white.
With children, make-believe and dramatic play is another area of interest. It begins when your child tries to imitate the things you are doing. Your little girl holds long conversations on her telephone and likes to help with the dusting. She will enjoy her own small size tools like the carpet sweeper, dust mop and dustpan that comes all in one set in the large toy department at the Weber Book Store.
Penney's has a miniature bathinette in which to bathe life-like rubber dolls; and the doll feeding kit at Ballard's includes tiny bottles plus all the other equipment to make up a dolly's formula.
Household appliances in miniature are dear to little sister's heart and make "playing house" very real to her indeed.
For boys, this make-believe and dramatic play is helped along with cars, trucks, boats, airplanes and trains. Add to these villages, block building projects, garages and railroad stations and you really have something.

Blocks are a help to the creative urge too. If they are large and sturdy, they will provide constructive play for years to come.

Toy Selection at a Glance
By JOAN S. WHITE
It is hard to go back to one's own childhood days to remember what sort of a plaything was appealing at any given time.
For Uncle Elmer or Aunt Harriet or anyone else who has a gift for a child on his shopping list and is groping for something appropriate, there follows a list of suggestions for children of various ages.
The Infant
At that tender age from one to six months, bright colors are the big attraction—in rubber balls, rattles, plastic rings or bracelets and bath toys.
For the ages of six to 12 months, add to this list wooden beads, plastic or wooden blocks, cuddly (and washable) animals and unbreakable cups and spoons.
Age one and two
Blocks—the bigger the better; washable dolls and animals and push or pull toys.
When he begins to walk, add a small wagon, wheelbarrow, doll carriage or truck.
A rocking chair or rocking horse, some type of toy for pounding, and if you want to be greeted with smiles (at least from the young 'un) something that makes a noise.
Unbreakable dishes, large colored wooden beads to string, a big ball with a rough surface and if he has a phonograph, records suitable for his age.
Three and four
He is mighty active and will enjoy a low slide, a toy auto to ride in and a tricycle, doll carriage or sandbox.
A child loves to make-believe and favors grown-up looking clothes, housekeeping toys, dolls and a doll house, simple trains, trucks and airplanes.
He likes to try out new things so look for picture puzzles in several pieces, crayons, blocks, blunt scissors, and colored paper. A bell or drum will especially delight him.
Four to six

For active play, a scooter, a good big wagon, a tricycle, skates or a jump rope will be fun.
He pretends, you know, and will love a toy village, playhouse, small garden or housekeeping tools, dolls, telephone, trucks, trains, airplanes and the like.
A youngster of this age wants to express himself and welcomes simple musical instruments to help him do it.
Clay, blocks, sand toys, blunt scissors, puzzles, paper dolls, records—and oh, how he loves to be read to!
Proceed with Caution
Avoid small toys which can be swallowed and the larger toys with small removable parts. Stay away from stuffed animals with button eyes or those stuffed toys that are not washable.
Do not buy poorly made objects for they may break or splinter. Say no to poisonous paint, sharp edges and highly inflamable costumes.

Ribbon Tricks
Make Yule Clicks
The girl with little of either time or money can settle her Christmas gift problems simply and thriftily with home-made ribbon accessories.
Such things as handsome stoles, gay cummerbunds, hat and hand-bag sets, dickeys and belts can be made with a few yards of ribbon and a few minutes time.
Directions for making these gift gadgets are contained in a booklet "Ribbon Hows" available at most department store ribbon counters. If you can't find the booklet, it's easy enough to figure out how to make the things yourself.
You can select three colors of ribbon, for instance, in two-inch grossgrain, moire or satin, and whip or fagot them together to make a beautiful stole or ascot scarf. You can make a Scotch coat.

And if you're handy with the knitting needles, a lacy knit stole with knit ribbon stripes is simple to make and sure to dazzle.
COLLEGE SPIRIT
DURHAM (P) — That college spirit still thrives in a troubled world was proved conclusively recently by six members of Duke University cross-country team. The race was a run-away for Duke, so as the six runners came charging down the stretch they joined hands and sang "Dear Old Duke," the Blue Devils' alma mater song, as they crossed the finish line in a tie for first.
