Anaheim, Hurd Bell Gardens, Orange Tangle In Preliminary Consolation Tilt It's gonna be Anaheim and Huntington Beach in finals tonight for the championship of the 1950 Orange county class B tournament. These two teams earned their way into the finals yesterday with convincing victories and are scheduled to clash the 8 o'clock feature. As a result of other games played yesterday, Bell Gardens will meet Orange in the consolation final at 6:30 and Fullerton and Rosemead, scheduled to play off for third place tonight, will instead meet for the trophy sometime next week. Scheduled to go in a 7:30 game tonight, the Indians begged off because of the CIF football playoff game being held tonight in Fullerton, and the two schools, by mutual agreement decided to postpone the game until a suitable time next week. Favorites Fixed The favorites for the finals are fairly well defined. At best, Orange and Fullerton will have only outside chances in their games, and Huntington Beach will probably be granted an edge over Anaheim in the big one. The Oilers, gathering momentum as they move along, earned the right to the final spot yesterday with an excellent 61-51 win over Rosemead in the tournament's best game to date. The Oilers, gathering momentum as they move along, earned the right to the final spot yesterday with an excellent 61-51 win over Rosemead in the tournament's best game to date. Earlier the Colonists had used their starters for only two quarters in routing Fullerton 49-24. In the consolation bracket, Bell Gardens encountered some unexpected opposition at first, but then eased in 49-29 over Laguna. Orange built up an 18-7 lead over Fullerton in the third period, blew it, and then won 23-22 in an overtime period. Top Game Yet Except for a handful of diehards, the gymnasium was deserted when Huntington Beach and Rosemead started at 5:30 yesterday, but those who stuck it out were treated to a fancy show of lightweight basketball. Both teams freely racked up points in a contest that saw both the team and individual marks for the 1950 tournament smashed. The Oilers did it with their 61, but the individual mark went to center Ricky Hartman of Rosemead who held his team in the running with 28 points. Without Hartman, Rosemead could have gone home early for forward Tom Carney and center George Hasley were hooping them in for the Oilers. Rosemead hung on grimly for a quarter, but a scoring famine in the second period sent Huntington Beach ahead 35-22 at the half. It was held even after that with the Oilers protecting at least a nine-point bulge for the remainder of the game. Unusual Strategy In the preceding game, Lancer forward Ed Strickler had tied what was then the individual mark of 18 as Bell Gardens won its way into the consolation finals. The mark had been set on Tuesday by forward Jerry Wright of Bell Gardens. The Lancers utilized a strange bit of strategy, declining free shots on 13 different occasions to take the ball out of bounds—starting early in the first quarter. Even with a lead of 17 points with less than two minutes to go, the out-of-bounds play prevailed. Laguna managed to make a game of it until the final period. FRAMING LUMBER 2"x4"-8 ft. NOT THIS TIME—Anaheim forward Paul Salazar missed on this assault on the Fullerton yesterday afternoon, but the Colonists didn't miss too often as they moved into the final B tournament with a 49-24 win over the Indians. Georgia, Texas Aggies Set To Open Post-Season Bowls COLLEGE PARK (AP) — The Texas Aggies and Georgia's Bulldogs were due here today to take the lid off the major post-season bowl games. They meet in the first Presidential Cup contest tomorrow. Coach Wally Butts' Bulldogs, arriving in nearby Washington, D.C., by train, will be shooting for their third bowl victory over a Southwestern team. They whipped Texas Christian in the 1942 Orange Bowl and Tulsa in the 1946 Oil Bowl. The Aggies, who chose to fly up for the big game, have split their four previous bowl games: they beat Tulane in the 1940 Sugar Bowl and nipped Fordham 13-12 in the 1941 Cotton Bowl, they dropped decisions to Alabama in the 1942 Cotton Bowl and LSU beat them in the 1944 Orange Bowl. Royal welcomes were worked out for both teams on their arrival here. Col. Waldron E. Leonard, chairman of the District of Columbia citizens committee, planned to present the keys of the nation's capital to Georgia in the morning and the Aggies in the afternoon. Luncheons, dinners and other affairs are on the week-end schedule. Vikes Favored To Whip Boise PASADENA (UP)—Long Beach city college was installed as a five-point favorite today over Boise, Idaho, JC in tomorrow's fifth annual Junior Rose Bowl game. Both eleven finished their seasons undefeated. Boise, in fact, hasn't been licked in 40 games since 1948. The game, a sort of preliminary to the main event here New Year's Day, parports to decide a national champion among the two-year schools. Long Beach is generally regarded as the country's No. 1 JC squad. Most rating systems rank Boise second or third. Personnel on both clubs were pronounced physically ready yesterday after romping through their last heavy contact drills. Coach Buck Andreason moved his Long Beach Vikings up to Pasadena this morning. He said all his regulars will be suited up for the game. George Blankley, acting headman of the Boise Broncos, will conduct one more light workout at the team's Brookside training ground. Meet in Tourney Finals Loyola in CIF Semifinal Game Victor to Play Redlands-Compton Winner in Finals in Coliseum Saturday Aiming at a spot in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on next Saturday, Loyola and Fullerton high schools tangle at 8 o'clock at Fullerton in a match that will send one of these teams into the CIF finals. In the other semi-final contest, Redlands meets defending champ Compton tomorrow night in San Bernardino's Orange Show stadium. Fullerton and Loyola, both rated somewhat as "Cinderella" clubs in the playoffs, will enter the game at about tossup odds, although the Cubs may be classed in some quarters as slight favorites. They have already passed two CIF playoff tests to one for the Indians. Both teams had to spring upsets to come as far as they have. Fullerton, although having only one, certainly has the greatest of three, topping an undefeated and untied San Diego team 20-19 in the first round. Loyola also advanced past the first round on a conversion victory, whipping Santa Barbara 21-20, and then clubbing Santa Monica last week 21-13. The Cubs have a well balanced attack with the running of half-back Frank Layana and the pass is left to Duane Pennington, an all-league choice last year, and Jewel Owens, an all-league choice this year. Redlands will also rate a very slim edge over Compton tomorrow night, principally off its record that shows it to be the only Fullerton, although having only one, certainly has the greatest of three, topping an undefeated and untied San Diego team 20-19 in the first round. Loyola also advanced past the first round on a conversion victory, whipping Santa Barbara 21-20, and then clubbing Santa Monica last week 21-13. The Cubs have a well balanced attack with the running of half-back Frank Layana and the passing of quarterback Pat Ryan. Layana was Southern California's leading scorer this year with 103 points, but when he bogged down slightly against Samohi last week, Ryan went to the air to pass for all three scores. Fullerton, of course, hopes that it has the backfield horses to retaliate. The leading ball carriers are Don Hudson with 529 yards gained and Doyle Duggins with an average of 8.65 per carry. Passing undefeated team remaining in the playoffs. The Terriers have won 10 straight, while Compton has lost only once in an equal number of tries. Compton, however, seems to be pretty rough with its two returning backs from the 1949 championship team. They are Ralph Kubota, who has gained an amazing 898 yards this year, and Tom Ramsey, a 12-TD man. Against Covina, in the CIF quarterfinals, Ramsey rammed over for five touchdowns. SANTA SAYS...
