Seem too early for Christmas shopping? Actually it is later than you think, so if you need to be put in a Christmas mood, how about some holiday baking?
It is fruit cake time right now. These luscious, rich cakes—than which there is nothing finer—traditionally are packed away to age for at least three weeks after baking. Having to be made in advance of the holidays is a point in their favor because they are out of the way before the inevitable Christmas rush starts.
Fruit cakes make wonderful gifts and although they require quite a long list of ingredients, are actually very simple to make.
The following recipe is my favorite. It is the result of extensive experimental work at the University of Minnesota and in the opinion of the experts there, makes the best possible holiday fruit cake.
VERY BEST FRUIT CAKE
¼ lb. citron
¼ lb. lemon peel
¼ lb. orange peel
½ lb. candied cherries
2 cups nutmeats
½ lb. dates
½ lb. candied pineapple
½ lb. raisins
¼ lb. dry coconut
½ lb. shortening
½ cup sugar
½ cup honey
5 eggs

Music Educator Addresses County Choral Guild
An inspirational talk on church music was given Monday evening at the Fullerton Presbyterian church by John Burke, minister of music at the First Baptist church, Los Angeles.
Speaking before the Orange County Chapter of the California Choral Conductors Guild, Burke stressed the fact that before conductors can be successful in organizing their choir, they must carefully analyze their own situations and organize themselves but the most important phase is, the promotion of group spirit. He particularly emphasized the importance of children's choirs singing regularly and having an important place in the worship service. Of particular interest to the Guild members was an outline by Mr. Burke of his own choir program which has proven to be very successful. Following the talk, time was given to answering many questions asked by interested choral directors.
Preceding the speaker, a fine dinner was prepared and served by the ladies of the Fullerton Presbyterian church. Dr. Hunter, pastor of the host church, gave a welcome message to the group. Bill Davis, chairman of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra membership sales, told of the three presbyterian women’s fellowship are putting finishing touches on it for their bazaar Friday and this point the sale promises to well worth their efforts.

Line an oiled baking tin withthree layers of waxed paper. Letone-third inch of paper extendabove all sides of the pan. Pourall the batter into the pan lightly. Do not flatten. Bake at 250degrees for four hours.
To keep the cake from dryingout while baking, place a flat pancontaining two cups of water inthe bottom of the oven whilebaking the cake.
When the cake is done, coolslightly and remove the paper. To give the cake a pretty glaze, boil white corn syrup for aboutthirty seconds and then apply tothe fruit cake. When the cake isthoroughly cold, wrap it ina cloth moistened in brandy andstore in aluminum foil or otherairtight container.
These directions produce onefive pound fruit cake. If you wish, the batter may be dividedinto smaller tins which willrequire only about two hours baking time.
